China's Ministry of Culture is once again cracking down on the online game industry in an attempt to limit the amount of "unwholesome" content the sector produces. According to a report from China Daily, the nation's officials are prohibiting the use of sex, violence or gambling to market Chinese developers' online games. Like the other regulations under this initiative, these restrictions will be effective as of August 1.
According to the government's report on sexually-charged advertising, hiring adult film stars to serve as spokespeople for online games is a surprisingly common practice in China. Over here, we get Mr. T and Ozzy Osbourne. That's a pretty fair trade-off, right?

I misunderstood the headline. So it's not just banning S&M in advertising?

So they'll allow violent and sexually inappropriate movies but not those kinds of games. There's so much bias against this industry. Online games aren't teaching children how to kill. It's the same as watching a movie, but one has a controller in hand to add a layer of player involvment.
Why can't the world just let us have what we crave for: Fun. When Chinese adults, in 15 years, look back at their chilhoods, they're going to remember the control and fear and restrictions. That's not cool.

Yes. Pretty much. You could have stopped there and summed up the valuable contribution most online games provides to kids. Some like Eve Online at least simulate an economic environment, diplomacy, etc.

They aren't banning violent or sexy games... they're just banning the use of violent and sexual ads for games.
If they did the former, it'd probably ban almost every Korean MMO the world plays.

Prices would go up due to supply and demand. China combined with Taiwan, literately creates easily 95% of all goods you can buy in retail store excluding food. In the case of food, they are responsible for more around 40%. For example, High Lander's frozen fish is fished in China.
If you remove 95% of the products from retail shelves, those remaining would have huge demand and stores could literately charge 10x the amount and still sellout. They would just be selling to the top 3-4% of the population that holds 85% of the world's weath.

So in a story about China using porn stars to sell games, we get an ironic picture of a cutesy looking MMO? I'm disappointed, Griffin McElroy.

This is just doublespeak for, "Bribe our officials or we will call your game sexual or violent even if it is just Pete Sampras tennis for seniors."
