In a recent interview with CVG, Ian Curran, THQ's executive VP of global publishing, touted his favorite new feature the 3DS will bring to the portable market. No, not its titular three-dimensional display tech. No, not all of those rebooted classic franchises. "What excites me even more," Curran explained, "is that there's technology built in that device to really combat piracy."
Curran added, "they combated the piracy on DSi, which they don't believe is cracked yet - but they know they've been hurt across the world and they believe the 3DS has got technology that can stop that." That's a nice sentiment, but considering how resourceful the modding community has proven itself over the years, we're pretty sure the only thing that could stop them from pirating 3DS games is some sort of self-destruct mechanism. We sincerely doubt Nintendo could get something like that past the FCC.

@SnapperDragon
At this rate byt he time it gets hacked the PS4 will be launching. I don't know what turn around time on these things are but unless its done within the next year or so and easily accessible it'll be irrelevant.

I Nintendop got something in the 3DS, that compares to the PS3 copy protection they're definately in a good position. But giving Nintendo's lousy history in the field of Anti-Piracy I highly doubt that.
Anyway - I hope the homebrew community can use the 3DS in the future wether legally or illegally. Because DS homebrew was awesome!

Hey THQ. Want people to stop pirating your NDS games? Stop charging full price for shovelware kiddie crap like Petz. The price should match the product. Idiots.

Considering the amount of crap that the DS has on it, mixed in with some real gems this is mainly where piracy stems from. I've spent £30 on a DSi game only for it to be played for 5 minutes because it was made very poorly with no redeeming features at all.
these companies need features that make it worthwhile actually buying the game, for example, mmorpg's. you need an active sub to play these, or steam where authentication is required every so often.

Last I checked, you can play downloaded cartridges on the DSi. However, no flash cart maker has managed to access the DSi specific hardware like the camera and the additional memory. Basically, while you can play most games on the DSi, games that have been created for only the DSi don't work.

Hope they're right about this one. I've no sympathy for the people that claim greatness of 'homebrew' apps -- an excuse is an excuse is an excuse to steal, and while I'm sure those of us that were around before the first search for a game title lead you to torrent sites go through legitimate channels as much as possible, and even go true on claims that they're "just trying," the newer kids are growing up never knowing what it meant to save up allowance for that new game, that rental, etc. You can tell from some of these forums/blogs that these kids sincerely feel they're doing no wrong, and it's scary to think how far-reaching of an impact this will eventually have in terms of commercially released content.

@Muu not all people that homebrew steal games, generalizing that as such makes you a fool. Flash carts have legitimate uses, from backing up your Game Library; reducing the carry load, so that you can have all your games available without the need to switch out 50 carts, to using the actual homebrew apps.

I'm OK with this article really. He can pretend the DSi hasn't been cracked and it makes him happy. They aren't able to lock it down on the DSi and that makes me happy.
He's happy, I'm happy. Surely this is a good thing and if the 3DS is as uncrackable as the DSi we'll both stay happy.
The truth of it is that pretty much everyone I know with a DS or DSi has an M3, R4 or AceKart. People who have never even considered pirating for any other console are happily downloading files from Pirate Bay with the cart they bought from Amazon. It's so easy it's pathetic.
The simple fact of it is that Nintendo are still charging premium price for their games, which are not comparable to PC, PS3 or X-Box games for prices which are. Do I think that Nintendo deserve to be paid £30 for yet another Mario game? Like hell I do. Make some quality games with new IPs and we'll discuss it.
The best anti-piracy system to date it the Wii. It's cost Nintendo nothing to develop because...er...they didn't develop any anti-piracy measures. Their whole plan seems to revolve around not making enough games worth playing to actually warrant the cost of the modding chips.
