3D Blu-ray PS3 update dated for September, YouTube 3D support planned
92
You can expect another firmware update for your PS3 this September. No, it won't add PlayStation Move support to the system (you already have that, folks!); instead, it will add support for 3D Blu-ray movies -- of which there's currently only one.
As with Blu-ray movies, Sony is using the PS3 as a Trojan horse for pushing new technology. 3D is a major corporate focus for Sony, as evidenced by plans to support not only 3D movies and games, but 3D photos as well "later in the year." SCEE senior director Mick Hocking has also promised support for 3D broadcasts through the Europe-exclusive PlayTV service, as well. Additionally, "YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well – and you'll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3."
Hocking also believes that many of us will adopt 3D cameras of our own in the future. "And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too," Hocking explains. Hopefully, that means we'll be able to use our PS3s to share 3D photos taken by our Nintendo 3DSs.

I'm not sure this has been said but: I don't want 3d. I don't want it on my tv, I don't want it on the games I see. I don't want it on YouTube, even if it's cheap that anyone can afford it, any boob. I don't want 3d in my house, a train or a plane. If this is the next wave of tech then the future is quite plain.

What's wrong with people like you?
You have to announce to the world that something doesn't interest you. Presumably because you think it is offensive for things to be out there that you don't want to experience.
But you also realize that the people reading this thread are into 3D, so you know they don't need your amazing announcement that this isn't something you want.
Seems like a nutcase attitude you've got.
Also, there's nothing plain about 3D. It's just a freaking medium. I've seen several awesome 3D movies, and some 3D games look amazing. Avatar sucked... but so what?
3D is here to stay and it's brilliant and you will eventually buy into it and proceed to whine that you don't want the next innovation.

Since you can't see the Dr. Seuss like rhyme, I'll respond to your immature response. 3d is a plain technology because I was using the cheap glasses back in the 80's/early 90's when it was the next big thing.
I have also mastered the internet and the ability to post my opinion, as have you, yet yours lacks any entertainment value. Also, it's nothing akin to AM radio because Sony and some other manufacturers are throwing everything they have at it. As a consumer i.e. stakeholder, I say it's silly with my pocket and my words.
Watch me predict the future and later buy my book: 3d will go nowhere in regards to television and at home entertainment. Thanks.

Go nowhere? When does that statement start? Cuz' like 120hz, 240hz, 720p, 1080p, HDMI, and any other upgrade within the last few years on LCDs, 3D will be capable on every 3DTV sold. That's definitely further than "nowhere" and really is only just the start. There's also two of the big 3 game hardware companies launching their versions of 3d, numerous companies releasing 3d camcorders and cameras, 3d picture frames, 3d movies, 3d games. Oh and the highest grossing movie of all time was mostly viewed in 3D. Its a strong start!

So every time anything is posted here, it should only be discussed by people who show unwavering support? That's just stupid.
These are discussion boards. We discuss things here. Part of the discussion will always be from a viewpoint that isn't into it, so if you can't man up and handle it, don't participate.

You guys are killing my inbox, and I'm not going to get pulled into this, so I'll just reply this one time.
I think 3D pictures are interesting, but I don't like 3D in general. I am more than allowed to voice my opinion, no matter what anyone on here believes.
I don't like 3D
I'll do it again
I don't like 3D. There.

No, not that.
Did you read my point. someone is upset that 3D is out there, because it's somehow wrong in their universe for something to occur they don't like.
But they realize they are doing the exact same thing on a worse scale by announcing to a 3D thread they don't care about 3D.
Personally, I don't have a problem with people wanting or not wanting 3D. They can make their purchases accordingly. You, for example, should buy some kind of reading comprehension book, but that's up to you.

Won't be surprised if the PSP2 or even the PSP sorts a 3D Cam attachement.
...but knowing how Sony fails to deliver when it comes to PSP peripherals, it'll never even arrive stateside.

It's sad to see that today's adults feel the need to implement a childish idea into their marketing. 3D should've stayed in kids movies. & if people are willing to push up out 1000+ dollars for a 3D TV, 30+ dollars for 3D glasses & another PS3 just to get the full 3D experience so your eyes can hurt afterwards, then I really feel bad for this generation

All i'm going to say is i'ld rather Sony take a dip in the 3D pool first, then if it works Microsoft will follow. Right now it seems like a waste of time aiming at a very niche market.

@Prboi Completely agree. 3D is a gimmick, and until they get it sorted out without requiring the (expensive) glasses, a special, pricey TV, and without all the headaches and eye-aches that currently come with 3D, it ain't gonna work.

True, but when you look at the benefits of an HD set over an SD set, spending $750-1,000 makes a lot more sense than spending $2,000-3,000 for a 3D set, with or without glasses.

???
Please explain.
Why wouldn't this just be a firmware update?
Sure, a 3D-capable TV would be necessary, but why would we need a completely new blu-ray player?
And even if that was the case, why would you buy another PS3, instead of a stand-alone player that's probably cheaper?

Right now, the PS3 is the cheapest Blu-Ray Player on the market, to buy a 3D Blu-Ray Player alone, would be an enormous amount of money. The reason why they can't add 3D as a firmware update is because their is a special chip you need inside the Blu-Ray Player to enable 3D for movies since it's different than games

@Prboi I'm sorry, I can't find any information to support this. All I can find is that blu-ray support will be coming to PS3's via another firmware update in the Fall. Nothing I've found explicitly mentions that existing PS3's will or won't be compatible with 3D blu-rays, but the way the news is delivered (including when coming out of Sony mouthpieces), it sounds like all PS3's will be receiving support. Do you have any links to support your claim? I got about 5 million (?) links of various quality supporting mine when I googled "3d blu-ray on ps3"
Are you sure you're not confusing some news of an inevitable new SKU that will highlight the 3D blu-ray features?

"You don't have to spend even close to $2,000 to get a 3D capable set. Also the best flat panel HDtv sets cost at least close to $2,000 anyway."
Most consumers aren't buying top-of-the-line, champ. HD TV's are much more affordable than they used to be and like I said, you get a lot more bang for your buck when upgrading from SD.
Hardly anyone is going to go out and buy a 3D TV to replace the LCD they got only a year or two ago. And the people that do are not a large enough group to warrant any significant movement amongst consumers.

There is also Monsters Vs. Aliens on 3D blu-ray but I've only seen it bundled with the 3D Starter Kits. I'll pick up a 3D HDTV eventually but it will be quite some time before I find a full parallax 3D HDTV in my price range.

Touchscreens were a "gimmick" as well, and now they are all so "natural and intuitive". Times change and so does technology. It will evolve, just like everything else does.

You are working from the assumption that all new ideas in technology eventually take off, which is obviously not true.
