While speaking to Game Informer about older Mortal Kombat projects, series creator Ed Boon unveiled one installment of the which never saw the light of day: A co-op action adventure game subtitled Fire & Ice. "When they finished [Shaolin Monks]," Boon explained, "the guys at Paradox were gonna do another one called Fire & Ice. It was gonna be a co-operative Scorpion and Sub-Zero game."
We're not sure how the game's writers would have navigated the series' canon to make this union possible (don't those two, like, hate each other?), but we're disappointed nonetheless. To think -- if someone had asked us what our favorite co-op Mortal Kombat game was, and then asked what our favorite 1980s German ski film was, we could have just given them a single, satisfying answer.

Wait, I think I got it. Throughout his whole life, Sub-Zero was living with a clone of his brother, to which Scorpion killed, because it turns out Scorpion is Sub-Zero's real brother. Kind of like The Prestige.

In MK 1 they hate each other. After the end though and in the start of MK2 Scorpion protects Sub-Zero. So they could've easily gone with the official storyline for MK.
Just like how Kung Lao and Goro settled their diffrences and became friends.

Nah, they just play up their rivalry for the extra publicity it brings. Truth is they're good, close friends that frequently get together and jam out 80's style!

They probably could've made it so that they were forced to work together to take out a bigger threat. Kinda like a Vegeta, Goku partnership during the Frieza Saga

Because Dragonball Z is the most obscure thing one could ever find on the internet to reference this situation.
Odds are, more people on this site have seen it than those who haven't

@Punkrawk Bbob .......when one of the most popular animes in america, watched by an obscene amount of children in it's day is referenced, how does that imply either extreme nerdiness or even being an anime nerd period?

one - sorry for typo. Heaven forbid my fat fingers strew up a stroke or two. Getting used to a laptop that I borrowed.
two - I'm imagining trying to explain this to someone in public. Anyone overhearing you saying Goku and Vegeta teaming up for a battle against Frieza would assume you're a freakish manchild and will probably reference you being like the guy from 40-Year Old Virgin.
Just sayin'. Sorry for having a sense of humor on Joystiq ^_^

Man, if you call that guy an otaku, then what do you call someone who points out that G Gundam makes multiple references to the Chinese wuxia novel Xiao Ao Jiang Hu, like the Touhou Fuhai being the Dong Fang Bu Bai? I sure wouldn't want to be that guy.

Shaolin Monks was one of the better MK games to come out in the last decade. It makes me a sad panda to know this could have been ;-(

You do a story about Fire and Ice and don't use a picture from the movie Blades of Glory? I'm appalled.

This is similar to someone telling you that you almost had a million dollars but it was torn to shreds. Maybe not a million, more like twenty-five dollars.

Ninja Gaiden combat style with Mortal Kombat characters and fatalities. You just lost 70$ from me.

It wouldn't be THAT hard to trump up a reason for them to work together, especially in a context as cornball as the Mortal Kombat universe.
Disappointed they dropped the project. Monks was the best MK game since... oh, just about EVER.

I then did the Scorpion pose to my brother. I was beat up.
