Expect a lot more things to explode and/or fly directly into you in Killzone 3. Guerrilla is hyping up "cinematic deaths" as a new feature of its upcoming sequel, and it looks exactly as it sounds. According to a blog post on Killzone.com, "Killzone 3 is strongly influenced by Hollywood realism ... Cinematic deaths are the logical progression of this design philosophy, adding a variety of spectacular (and sometimes explosive) new ways for Helghast enemies to perish."
Valve's "cinematic physics" (utilized in Half-Life 2: Episide Two) favored drama over realism, and it appears Guerrilla is following suit; however, we'll have to agree with some of the fans' criticisms. "I don't understand how when you shoot that ship with missiles, it loses control and comes right at you," one commenter questioned. Another added that the new cinematic death animations "look really weird and fake." Would you agree?
@t3hguitarman Odd yes, but if some kind of ballast or high-pressure container on that side of the ship was breached, perhaps from the metallic shrapnel of a sabot-type of warhead hitting it from the opposite side and punching through the keel, the pressure expelled from that angle could cause the ship to do that.
@(Unverified) That's probably what they're going for, but from what it looks like in the video, the blown up airship almost has like an odd attraction towards the player.
Actually, this is easily explained and you can see it in the video. The missle blew up the right engine. With that out, there's downward force from the left engine but none from the right. This would make the ship barrelroll and possibly push it to the right.
Now my question would be... would attacks target certain parts on enemies to create the most "hollywood" action?
Like... If I were to shoot an airship with a rocket launcher, would the rocket strategically hit/affect the airship so that the airship would careen out of control towards the player?
Or would there be chances that enemies die in an anti-climatic fashion haha
I'm just wondering if it's scripted to favor huge things blowing up in front of the player. You know?
@t3hguitarman While my explanation holds some air, you're completely right - the whole event is so a 3D effect can comes towards you. In that way, it is pretty lame.
@t3hguitarman I guess no one noticed that one side of the ship was exploded, while the other was not. One engine out and the other one still running would "REALISTICALLY" cause a barrell roll. Wow!
Wait what? You agree with that comment? I don't really understand your logic (or his).
"I don't understand how when you shoot that ship with missiles, it loses control and comes right at you,"
Yet you both understand how in every FPS your character magically regenerates health or can instantly kill a person with a single swipe of a knife to the shoulder?
I think if the lack a realism in games is ruining your fun then you're into the wrong hobby.
"Yet you both understand how in every FPS your character magically regenerates health or can instantly kill a person with a single swipe of a knife to the shoulder?"
Where in the hell did I mention anything about that?
I'm just saying that it would be stupid if things you kill/destroy come flying towards you just to make it feel or seem more exciting.
I think explanations that seek plausible reasons for why the ship came at the player are moot if it looks as bad and unrealistic as it did in the video.
To Burning Sensation's concerns. Unrealistic mechanics like regenerating health and instant knife kills *when done right* immerse the player in the game. The physics in the video clearly looked wrong to people who see real-life physics everyday, though probably not of the exploding air-ship variety.
well if you look close at the video he was reloading and the ship blew up a few seconds later so someone else blew the ship up causing to to come at the viewer.
No one said Killzone 3 is ruined because of this. They tried to add a dramatic effect, but it came off as cheesy and contrived, so in that respect they failed. I agree with s ls, I think the concept is poorly executed here.
@Foetoid You definitely can't blame him for associating the two new motion controllers that were both announced at the same time and have similar concepts. But you are right they don't appeal to the same markets. Kinect appeals to more casual audiences while I believe that Move will appeal to a larger portion of the market. Both Hardcore and the lovers of shovelware.
it's a hovership. that explosion right before the ship loses control looks like it takes out the bottom right side of the ship (where the right thrusters are), which would end up sending a ship like that into a roll of sorts.
I think the ship was about to move forward so, the Rocket-Propelled Something hit it at the same time as the theoretical propulsion system was giving the ship the momentum to go forward. Obviously that force outweighed the force of the collision and net movement was towards the player. My theory:P
Until I see some cinematic deaths which don't come careening at the player, I'm not going to be able to entertain any logic behind why it may be "realistic" or not
One of the things I do remember explicitly was how well done the death anims were in Killzone 2. Perfect mix of ragdoll and canned (probably tweened in the middle with some kind of trax-style layering).
@(Unverified) I'm just playing that game now. The only thing I can say is, WOW. I'm blown away by how amazing the death animation is, of course not only that, the blood, the graphics and the destructible environment makes one heck of package. After start playing K2 just now, I really have my doubts on which game have better graphics, if is Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2. Now I cannot wait for Killzone 3.
Uncharted 2 has better graphics than KZ2, no doubt. Actually Uncharted 2 has better graphics than anything on any console without a doubt. A perfect illustration would be to jump into multiplayer with some friends and watch the facial expressions of the your friends characters. It is quite amazing!
KZ had great graphics for sure but Uncharted 2 was just on a level not yet tapped by any other console game. Probably any game period other than Crysis.
@golfs4panzys 'Graphics' is a really a general catch all in regards to visuals, and enters apples and oranges territory. Better graphics? In what way? Textures, procedurals, technical effects like smoke, shadows, color pallete, aliasing, mipmapping, LOD, etc? Killzone has the more advanced and more impressive engine. The art direction in Uncharted, though, is tremendous. They are both exemplary in their own ways, and direct comparison is kind of useless.
Oh man, you just reminded me of how great a game Black is! The explosions, guns, just everything was so awesome, although the story and such were average. I loved it though
The story content wasn't average in Black - it was either abysmal or just completely pointless, depending on your view of things. It was still kinda fun, though, and it truly was hilarious killing anyone in that game. It was like an over-the-top stuntman tryout or something, where you'd only get props if went totally apesh*t.
wow looks like it was made with gimmicky 3D in mind. The ship coming at you and the helghast too are obviously done so in 3D it looks cool, but no real purpose.
This could be ok if they don't overuse it. But knowing game developers these days they will, and every single ship that you destroy will come flying right at you like you're the unluckiest dude on that barren planet.
Visari is gone, but the war is far from over. Helghast forces have mounted a devastating counter-attack, prompting the ISA evacuation of planet Helghan. As new Helghast battalions appear with more powerful weapons, ISA forces find themselves outmanned, outgunned and surrounded.
