Star Trek Online producer 'could easily see' the game using Turbine freemium model
11
Star Trek Online's new executive producer Daniel Stahl recently stated that he "could easily see" a hybrid free-to-play model working for Cryptic's MMO. Stahl specifically mentions (recent Warner Bros. acquisition) Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online as "interesting plans" worth taking note of. DDO went freemium last year to create a dungeon full of gold for the developer; LotRO will roll the die for the same fate this autumn.
Stahl expressed that Turbine's model creates a "robust way to demo the game" and allows those wanting more to pay for a subscription or purchase items á la carte. With Cryptic's parent-company Atari operating at a loss, ways to beam up revenue would appear logical. It's unclear if it's a sign of the future, but Cryptic did conduct a free-to-play away mission back in May.

Yeah, they already are selling uber-gear and such, and from what I've heard the game is far from capable of turning a profit off anything past its namesake.
Though honestly, Turbines "Freemium" model is only working for DDO, Lord of the Rings is getting ruined by it. You'll pretty much be forced to pay for everything with cash if you want to try and play for free, and people can buy their way through achievements, crafting, and gear.

I am actually looking forward to the F2P model coming to LOTRO... After seeing how some of it actually works vs how people assume it will work, there are actually more benefits than negatives... especially for me, a lifetime account holder.
More people playing and more money coming in are hopefully the main differences which would then equate to more content coming out...
Its more of a alternative to monthly fees... You can still do that if you prefer and have basically the same experience you have now.

I'm a subscriber and I'm still enjoying the game, but I wouldn't be opposed to a "freemium" model. If anything, it would add more players. But primarily, there's quite a bit of stuff in the C-Store I'd be interested in, but won't buy because I'm already spending $15/mo and don't want to pour any more into the game. If it were free-to-play, I'd be happy to get some of that C-Store content.
Bring it on!

@Jerk Face
I was in the beta, considered the lifetime, got frustrated that I couldn't have everything I wanted with the bonus features spread out across all of the stores (Seriously, why couldnt I have a trill captain with TNG gear and a borg officer?) Decided "to hell with the whole thing" and cancelled my preorder, then considered signing up again when they announced the Ferengi as a cheap cash-grab DLC. That killed it for me. Good job, folks.
I'm not even touching the Klingons.
