Hurray for being able to self-publish on the PSN! Time is just ticking down until I buckle and buy this, it just looks like so much fun.

Where I'm confused is why Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo don't just cut out that entire publisher middle man on downloadable games and just let the developer straight up post the title on their formats. With the Internet as a distribution method, you don't need publishers, and one of the Big 3 really needs to capitalize on that concept.

@LaughingTarget Well, that's how Joe Danger ended up being on PSN, and as an "exclusive." I bet Hello would love to see the game on as many platforms as possible, but restrictions (like this) prevented them from joining XBLA.

Plenty of WiiWare/DSiWare games are self-published. Cave Story was published by Nicalis (the developer of the WiiWare port). I'm not too sure what the situation is with XBLA, but PSN has a lot of self-published titles, too.

Thing is, even smaller/indie developers go with publishers because publishers have the money to fund their project, and help get it promoted. Thing is, when someone else pays the bills, they make the calls.

Another part of the problem is that there isn't anything like NPD sales data for downloadable games. Meanwhile Microsoft and Sony don't seem to be keen on making that information available to publishers. And when publishers can't get an idea for sales numbers of existing comparable titles, it makes it pretty difficult to gauge whether or not a game will be profitable for them.

@jrr best way now on PSN to see or maybe kinda closely assume the sales is buy looking at the rating system, only those who buy the games are able to rate. of course there are people that dont rate their bought games but again its a way i guess to estimate sales

Isn't that all the more reason for these devs to go it alone? If the big companies aren't willing to take the risk and then put the effort into their downloadable content, they should just be cut out of the transaction.

I find that the Joe Danger folks ran into a very old school way of thinking about video games. I'm glad they didn't compromise their integrity just for some publisher to piggyback on their successful project!

@Wiizer

Well, yeah. I was never saying that devs shouldn't do that, just adding a reason why pubs are hesitant when it comes to downloadable games.

But since you bring it up, not all devs have that option. Most devs look to pubs for additional funding in order to be able to even finish development. From there you've got marketing which is even more money they need. It also requires resources like contacts/relationships with game journalists, advertisement partners, people to create ads and such, relationships with MS/Sony for possible promotions and ads on their services, etc.--all of which are things which publishers already have in place, since it's typically been their job. Then of course there's things like QA which a lot of devs rely on pubs for if they don't have their own in-house team. Generally speaking, a dev has to invest some significant money and efforts in to their company outside of the making games part to get to the point where they can self-publish. That or do a lot of outsourcing, which isn't always the more cost-effective option. Lastly, when you consider MS is less friendly about allowing devs to have publishing rights as well, it's not in a lot of studio's favor to consider making that leap.

The publisher replies were pretty heart-breaking, although they lead to a hilarious Photoshop. Perhaps Joe Danger 2 will feature co-op with monkeys. And less coins.

I know, I just had to laugh when reading, "We're just not really into games that are fun right now...". That sounds like a stupid line somebody makes up when trying to get out of an awkward relationship.
"Oh, I'm sorry, baby, you're just too fun and interesting for me. I'm more of a simple kind of guy..."
For real, though, please, please somebody leak the name of this publisher, so I can know whether I need to bother tracking their games!

"(where Murray said he thought the line-free experience at his company's booth was much preferable to the half-hour queues for Mafia 2 right next door)"

Very true. I loved how I was able to go to Joe Danger and Raskulls and play the game while talking to a developer (or so I thought they were a developer!). Same thing with Bioshock 2 (they were showing off the at the time new DLC), who were through the Mafia II demo area.

I'm pretty sure that those examples actually support this argument though. Both come from small developers. Twisted Pixel either self publishes (or works with MGS), and Trials HD was published by Microsoft. I think that both Microsoft and Sony's publishing arms are doing a better job of finding great games to publish on their services than the third party publishers are.

I think this guy is looking at the wrong culprit here.

Yes, the game industry focuses on none downloaded games because there is more money to be gained from there in comparison to current downloaded trends, but the fact is the fault lays with the consumer not the game industry. The consumer for the most part hasn't accepted the game industry's attempts of offering digital downloads because they picture it as a less tangible property than the old ROM based content. You can't resell or trade downloaded content, access to it is restricted to the original machine.

Why did he have so much success on his game with PSN and why isn't he considering other venues of release? He left that out, his research probably showed that the PSP download games sell better than any other system, even over the DSi which has more units out there. Why? Because the PSP and PSPGo disc game selection has always been lack luster for the cost of the game, and the selection for downloaded content is far superior than those games being released in the costly format. Even Nintendo who has been focusing on downloaded distribution since the inception of the Wii doesn't release much in the way of first run content for their system, its mostly old games mixed in with time wasting apps.

All this still comes down to the consumer though, consumers are also under the impression that for some reason experience on downloaded content is limited due to the fact that you have to download it and there is no way in hell they are going to release a game that downloads more than 1GB, and even if they did it would be a cold day in hell that most would buy it because it would take too long to download. This is a false hood, under normal circumstances gigs don't take that long to download, people just remember back in the day when movie piracy across p2p network servers took forever, which was a two fold cause here. First, most people were using dial up at the time, second, p2p networks are only as fast as the slowest computer serving on it, since it was probably on a 56kb/s modem (53.2kps max down/45kps max up service) they were usually fairly slow, there are probably more people who don't have Internet then there are people who still use 56k dial-up service. There's also the fact that most of the consumers are ROM snobs, if its not on disc its not that good.

This guy should stop blaming the content providers because they didn't want to distribute his game and blame the content buyers.

Also, don't blame the costs of games for these sales trends, games cost more to develop now than they use to but they still are pretty much the same price as the always were, the consumer just got spoiled with cheap PS1/PS2/GameCube generation games.
