- 1UP (A): "... The move to DS was a strategic trade-off, and a canny one at that; DQIX sacrifices visual splendor in favor of more subtle technological benefits. In unchaining the series from the television, its creators freed themselves to design the open-ended, player-driven experience the series has always aspired to be."
- Nintendo Power (9/10): "The idea of adding multiplayer features to a story-driven, turn-based RPG originally struck me as insane, but Dragon Quest IX has made me a believer."
- GamePro (4/5): "Dragon Quest's appeal lies in its sense of warm, welcoming familiarity. It's refreshingly free of the pretension and overwrought cinematics of much of the current JRPG crop, instead presenting a lighthearted, charming adventure romp akin to what made the original Chrono Trigger such a beloved classic."
- Game Informer (8/10): "It's the first in the franchise to debut on a handheld, and it changes the classic formula in some significant ways. In many cases, these changes push the genre in interesting directions, but they never go far enough. The end result is an enjoyable Japanese RPG with mere hints of greatness."
Metareview: Dragon Quest IX
32
With the release of Dragon Quest IX for DS, Nintendo and Square Enix are trying once again to convert American gamers into Dragon Quest fanatics -- or at least sell some games. While we wait to see how the public responds to the multiplayer-enabled RPG, we decided to check in with reviews of the game other than our own. (We already know how that one went.)

I'm sure it's great, but I can't help but wish it were on a console instead.

I don't see the point in screaming the word 'ABUSE' at you.

I definitely agree to an extent, but seeing as how I have a flight/vacation coming up back to MN I couldn't be happier this is on DS. I spend most of my time on the 360, but can't help but feel that over the last handful of years that the DS has been absolutely favorite platform. They really knocked it out of the park with that handheld. Just in terms of handheld single player and party type play when you have friends around it's just the best. The thing is just damn fun.

Definitely one of the best in the series, and at least as good as III and IV. It blowing both VII and VIII out of the water is good enough reason for it not being on a console for me. It's my GOTY for sure so far at least.

It's not too bad, and barely noticeable. Really only happens when there is a lot going on on the screen at the same time, and it's for the most part pretty rare. Usually all it is a few skipped frames for a second and goes back to normal. Wouldn't say it's anything to hold against the game or lower it's value. Still, one of the best Dragon Quests and RPGs in general.

I only have my own experience to go off of, and I am having absolutely zero framerate problems. Then again, I am also not trying to play with the local wireless feature.
I'm wondering if the complaints also stem from pirated copies.

I love love love this game. Even though it's on a less powerful system, 9 is definitely a step-up from 8. The changes they've made are small but helpful. Thanks to a quick-save function and no random battles, the game is much less frustrating than previous iterations. Also helpful is you no longer lose progress when you die. You simply resurrect at the nearest church. Anyone who's went through an entire dungeon in DQ8 only to wipe on some random creature knows what a godsend this is.
That said, the frame rate really chugs once you have a full party. It's noticeable and annoying, but it's worth dealing with just to experience the game.

DQ VIII was set up the same way though. When you wiped out, you kept your stats and items, the only thing you lost was half your gold. You still resurrected at the church of the last town you were in with full HP and MP.

I suspect that the frame rate issues can be fixed by purchasing a copy of the game.

I'm sure it'll be fun, but it's sad, that I'll never use the multiplayer option although the game is build around it :(
Square Enix should have thought of all the Dragon Quest fans in rural areas and implemented online servers etc.
I hope DQ X for 3DS will do that.

@derdaim; For better or worse, Dragon Quest X will be on Wii. The next DS game will either be the remake of VI or DQ Monsters: Joker 2. Thankfully, Joker 2 has Wi-Fi support.

Actually, having not seen a single screen shot of a Wii version, and with the 3DS on the horizon, I don't think that a Wii DQ10 is a given any longer. Especially with how well this game performed on the DS in Japan. I don't think a console version could ever match its performance.

The only and I mean Only thing that concerns me personally about the law is if it makes developers do that second guessing about content.
Hell they already pull content to get an slightly lower ESRB rating.
And if one thing has FREAKING KILLED MOVIES FOR ME its PG-13
you look at PG-13 and say Horror movies (my personal favorite) and the combination just resonates "this is going to suck don't bother with it because its watered down beyond reason for the teeniebopers"
I mean look at the live action Akira, I wasn't really expecting much but I figured I'd give it a shot to see if they actually did something worth anything with it..... until it was confirmed it was PG-13 at which point I abandoned all hope for anything redeemable to come from said movie.
So it concerns me that laws like this might cause Developers/Publishers to neuter their games to sell more copies.

Been playing it since Sunday and I love it! I hope they don't take this long to get DQ X released in the USA after it's done. I wish gamers loved it in the U.S. as much as they do in Japan because it's such s fun rpg series.
