I glad it works, but the next question is: Is it worth the money and why should I care?

With this service you are essentially renting games at full price. That doesn't sound fun

@Lerkero That's what I was thinking. If they go under or you lose net connection for a day or two, no games. If you can't afford the sub, no games.

All seems like a bit of bullshit to me, I'll stick to Steam & Direct2Drive for now.

I hate the fact that you can never own material you purchase from OnLive. The playpass thing is irritating considering you're still paying full retail for it. I'd rather just build a gaming PC and upgrade it once every 5 or so years like I've been doing, because honestly it seems like the better deal.

I guess if you're really into gaming portably it would be cool, but I hate gaming on laptops regardless of how well the game runs on it. I would never want to play a game like AC or ME2 portably just because I've tried it before and I felt like it was really awkward.

I've used onlive and I have to say its pretty awesome.. now would I actually pay for the service? Probably not..

That being said they have to really change up their pricing models to get people interested in actually signing up, they should look at what gamefly does for pricing and follow their lead.

I know digital distribution is the next big thing, but I still prefer physical copies of my games.

I like the boxes, manuals, discs... with digital distribution, all that is removed, and the worse thing is that they don't transfer those savings to us.

Plus, services like OnLive only allows you to rent the games.

There is only one way I would embrace digital distribution: if they sell the games at retailers with a box, manual, etc... but with a voucher with a code to download the game... kinda like Patapon 2.

@jsx92 Piracy is not the cause of the current PC software situation. It's the perceived loss from piracy. Two completely different things.

@FernandoRocker This isn't even digital distribution since they never even distribute it to you. This is a really fancy interactive video site. I just can't get behind it. You don't actually have the game. You don't actually even have your saves. The video quality sucks(really! It physically sucks). I guess if you want gaming on laptops and AIO PC's it's OK. Any mid level graphic card will make any PC bought in the last 3 years play any game on the market at better quality than this service.

@glassd

Oh please, don't get started on that "perceived loss" bullshit.

Unless you're willing to argue that every single pirated copy of every game that's ever been pirated would not have otherwise resulted in a sale, which is an absolutely absurd leap in logic, then there is *some* loss due to piracy. Just because you can't put your finger on a definite amount doesn't mean there is none.

I absolutely agree with jsx92; pirates are ruining fair use for everyone. If there were no piracy, DRM wouldn't be as aggressive. It's a game that will end up forcing companies to put *everything* on the cloud, and that's going to be a sad time... no access to any media you buy without an active internet connection.

@FredFredrickson bohooo, bad pirates are making me cry
60$ = fair use? more like abuse
yeah i know what you bring up next...it's the pirates who are responsible for those prices
wrong...it's people who still buy games, like you and me
market economy, ever heard? no? ok, than lets try it with a stupified, propaganda infused story:
you know, at the top of every little corporate developer sits a little corporate asshole. every now and then they meet each other, sit around tables and most of the time they talk about their kids, wifes, golf handicaps, their new yacht,...like most of us
but sometimes life isn't that great, your wife cheats on you...so you have to talk about something completly absurde, something like business.
some years ago, all this happend to one of those table guys. we call him successful fred (or SF), got this idea in his head, that increasing the price could possibly lead to bigger profits, so he pitches it and everyone says "good boy, lets give it a try" and slaps him on the back

a year passes, the new fiscal results get back: "oh look, we made 20 gazillions more than before, awesome. and even sales went up 5%, those stupid consumers must really love to give us their money"

more years pass, the gaming market grows and grows, prices rise and rise as suddenly: "WTF! we only made 5 gazillions more this year than last, and already put 10 gaz. more in our and our friends pockets....whats wrong with the consumers?"
SF: "must be those stupid developers, they are making games that noone wants to play. lets put boobs and zombies in all of them. zombie boobs anyone?"
"No, wait. see: almost everyone on this planet is playing our games, we have to increase the prices even more if we want that new yacht for our yachts yacht this month"
SF: "yeah, lets do that, i can't wait 2 more months for my yachts yacht yacht. can we still sack some developers?"
"sure, the others will just have to work harder"
SF: "zombie boobs?"
"lets keep that as some kind of last resort tactic, like when society is stupid enough...erm...culturally degrad....when people are ready for it"

another year passes, new results come in: + 2 gazillions
SF: "Boy, oh boy! we are so (bad swearing word). What should we do?"
"lets take a closer look at some statistics...well, here we have the problem! even though sales were increasing over the years, some people stopped buying our games and found out that pirating is not only cheap, and most of the time really easy, but also gives them the opportunity to get access to a broader spectrum of cultural influences"
SF: "Ha, lucky for us, that we don't make any cultural relevant games"
"yeah, but now they pirate our products, and buy games from those small indy companys we haven't bought yet."
SF: "LETS LAUNCH THE ZOMBIE BOOBS!"
"noooo...at least not yet. first we bitch around, saying that all those pirates are destroying us. second step: we implement some stupid protection systems for our games. the more complicated the better. maybe we get some people to switch sides again this way, but probably they get cracked in short time. last step: raising the prices. but not like the last times we did that. no, this time we let the consumer bleed out, 10$+ or more per game. if they ask why, we say the pirates are taking our money, because they are stealing so much games."

(this could go on for quite some time, but i'm really not in the mood for writing 20 pages of this BS, so lets shorten this up from now on)

next year: profits up, everyone is happy because consumer is ready to pay even more for games
some years later same problem. this time they say "new hardware, more costs...you have to pay more"
next: "bad pre owned games, and bad pirates....we now make online distri, because you can't pirate that and it's total cool...but even tough we save money from shipping and packaging we don't make the games any cheaper, because...you know...consumer is will pay anyway

so: no pirates = no online distribution ?
unlikely
they don't even have to bitch around all the time. most people don't care about pirates, because they already pirate music and movies themself.
when i heard "psp has so much piracy" guess what i did? bought a psp (ok, for sony it's only marketing bitching. they know exactly what they are doing. one of the main reasons (if not #1) the ps1 sold that much units was it's piracy "problem". everyone i knew with a ps1 was pirating. they tried the same with the psp when entering the handheld market, i guess they failed so far. nintendo fights for it's market share...unlike sega :/ ).

oh wait...i pirate games? yeah...but guess what, i'm still buying games
i'm just not willing (and able) to pay freaking 70€/89$ for every stupid game i'm interested in.
and you should do the same if you think that games are to expensive, because i can tell you one thing: games won't get cheaper as long as you buy them at high prices

if your only problem is digital distribution: buy your games at the store as long as you can and then stop gaming. or quit bitching about pirates, because they are not the problem, it's you for being the industries bitch

Oh give me a break. People aren't allowed to make money from the work they do?

I'm a liberal guy, but I still think everyone is entitled to success. You don't deserve to have people take the things you produce for free just because you've built your career around it.

I've been using it, and I think it's pretty cool. I haven't bought any games, but I've played the demos. The only problem I really have with it is the selection of games. The one's I'd like to play are available on consoles. I know it's dumb but I like to get achievement points. It would be great if they could get more pc exclusives like The Witcher and the The Witcher 2. I realize the first game is kind of old, but my laptop (my ony pc) is not powerful enough to really play it. With OnLive I could. Bring more PC exclusives and I'll pay for that second year. As it is now I'm pretty happy with the free year, and think it will only get better with more games.

I am very impressed with the tech behind OnLive. It is amazing that it can provide a better remote experience over a broadband connection than I get when I use Remote Desktop to connect to any computer in my house over a connection with like 5 times as much bandwidth. The selection of games is pretty bad right now though. I own almost every game on this service that I am interested in playing already.

Oh yea and one thing to keep in mind about OnLive: it is basically version 1.0 (though their actual versioning scheme is a little drunk and doesn't say 1.0).

@ch3burashka That's simple. I think with a name like Sony or Microsoft behind it people will be more willing to take the risk. Sony/Microsoft might think, hey we can make this work where they failed! Also I think it would work well with the future consoles. You could purchase full games and play them instantly without any downloading. Also they could rent games if they wanted too...

Anyone who thinks that cloud gaming won't take off because of the lack of physical object is crazy. Look at music, people said the same about that.

There will always be a hardcore that want the box in their hand but the vast majority of people will be happy with a downloaded game that's cheaper due to lower distribution costs.

Sure, there are services like Last.fm and Pandora, but people still like being able to listen to music without an active internet connection, and that requires either discs or digital files.

Recall what happened when Microsoft pulled the plug on their previous music DRM service a couple of years ago. Thousands of people lost access to a lot of content that they paid for, and thought they owned.

Are you going to be willing to sink hundreds, or even thousands of dollars into purchasing games "on the cloud" via OnLive only to possibly lose access to all of them at some time in the future? I sure as hell would not do that.
