"if you want to design a seated experience, you can design a seated experience"
Which basically means that "you can't sit down unless we design it that way". I get that people wouldn't play sports games sitting down but for all other games, I'm usually too tired after a day's work to stand in front of my TV and "relax". I'd rather sit down. Hope devs bear that in mind when developing motion controlled games...

Exactly I'm not against motion control games but I don't want to be standing to play each one. When I see myself playing a racing motion controlled game I see myself sitting on my couch revving up with my foot on the pedal and steering with my hands while sitting down.

Only problem is that this kind of system doesn't work very well. It's basically just an Eye if operating in this mode.

And Eye games are a lot worse than Dualshock games. Kinictht seated games will be a lot worse than just using your 360 controller.

It's better for 3D tracking of a dancing person. It's pretty limited, in my opinion.

Works both ways man. You can't stand and play unless it is coded to recognize you standing.

Just like any controller, "A" is not going to make you jump no matter how many times you press it unless it is coded to do so.

*facepalm* So, the Wii remote shouldn't work when you are seated in a dancing game, and when you are standing in a shooting game?

Meh, my analogy is almost as bad.

If the hardware supports both, then why can't the developer have a menu option for sitting or standing? Practically every game on the Wii supports left-handed and right-handed motion. This shit is obvious to anyone besides the creators of Kinect. The demographic targeted is a poor fit for the device if they play standing up, sit down, try to keep playing, and lose at the game. It'd be even worse if they didn't realize that was the problem. Are casual players really going to stand that, or would they rather pack everything up and send it back to the store?

So I guess Microsoft's policy of getting some sales up-front and then people sending their shit back to them is going forward full-force, eh?

Makes sense, Kinect only transmits the 3D representation of what it sees and the game designer can code whatever experience it wants to create using the respresentation.

Anyways, very excited about Kinect. I feel it's going to be a new experience.

Anyhoo, given that they've given processing responsibilities over to the 360, i imagine Kinect can be made to do a lot of things, but some of the stranger stuff will sit more exclusively in the hands of the developers.

Haha, that pretty much nails all this "controversy" surrounding Kinect recognizing players sitting / standing / etc. It's akin to asking if you can play a normal controller-based game with only one hand, or if you can play while holding the controller upside down.

The games are being made with an idea in mind of the position the player should be in, and that's the way it should be. If the game is about kicking your feet out to stop a ball, for instance, how would you play it without standing anyway?

I'm not sold on Kinect, and I doubt I will get one unless some really great stuff comes out for it (and it's cheaper), but I think people are casting too much scrutiny on non-issues. Why not wait and see if the thing will even work as advertised without delving into these ridiculous what-if scenarios?

@FredFredrickson

We're getting mixed signals from Microsoft and different developers. Some say it can, some say it can't. Also, the using a controller with one hand or playing upside down thing completely missed the mark. The game has to be programmed specifically to be one and/or the other. For some game that has you jumping up and down it makes sense to code it as a standing experience ... but what about a racing game? That seems like it could be either. I don't know about you but when I game I sometimes get excited and stand up or if I'm at a really hard part I find standing helps me focus ... is Natal going to be able to naturally flow like a standard controller if I go from seated to standing and back to seated? I'd also like to see someone playing a game on Natal while seated on a couch. Still haven't seen that video ... just read a press release.

Well, I'd like to think that if a driving game is made that uses only the hands as input, it would be pretty easy for it to go back and forth between standing and sitting, since it wouldn't really need to track the full skeleton anyway. That's only logical... and history shows that game developers aren't always the most logical thinkers sometimes, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I want to know what Kinect makes of gamers who have had amputations or were born with irregular or missing limbs. Will these people be able to use the device at all, even to play movies, or will it simply not recognize them as human?

I'm still stoked for being able to control the UI with my voice and for whatever interactivity is planned for Fable 3. Other than that, yeah, eh.

Then again, I hate 90% of the motion control implementation I've experienced on the Wii and have no interest in buying a Move either.

I have to agree. Child of Eden looks good, not to mention I don't see what would stop it from working while sitting or even laying down. RUSE support would have been nice.

For everything else I've seen so far, I already have a Wii and I only play a select few games on it for a reason.

Wow ... $150 for a dashboard and fable controller? I don't see why they don't enable the voice commands over a mic. Seems stupid to have to buy Natal to get voice commands on the UI.

It's good to know that Kinect's software is as flexible at it is, but Microsoft should be working to incorporate different detection techniques into the default software package of development tools for Kinect. But, this flexibility is great, as it means that, over time, Kinect will get better at doing what it does, which means, for the consumer, an increasingly better gaming experience down the road.

Obviously it'd be better if it was more easily flexible, but I have to admit that I don't really see the appeal (at least one which warrents all the fuss) for a sitting down Kinect game. I mean sure, there's tons of games I don't want to play standing up, but then I also doubt I'd want to play them without a controller.

That's at least if we're talking full Kinect control. I could see using Kinect to enhance a standard game experience (such as head tracking in a racing game), but then that stuff all seems well within the realms of what Kinect can do. Full on Kinect "control" while sitting on a couch though? Maybe it's just a lack of imagination on my part but it seems to run counter to why a Kinect would be fun in the first place.

For a camera, this Kinect thing takes horrible pictures.
One good thing about Kinect though, it will help reduce the dreaded "gamer posture". The result of sitting with elbows on your knees staring at a screen (see picture in article and an example below).

So they just look at the player outline. This is more and more of a glorified EyeToy every day.

The #1 big showcase game for it at E3, the dancing game? It has no 3D component at all, it could also be done with EyeToy.

Snooze.

It hasn't been proven to be fun yet, but the tech has already been unveiled, so calling it a glorified Eyetoy is simply ignorant at this point. The tech here is clearly well beyond anything the Eyetoy could do, even if the games don't seem like they are anything exciting yet.

Not to denigrate a developer because they're making an honest living, but has Blitz Games made any good games? I know them from making the Burger King games and the not-so-good Karaoke Revolution 2009 game. I also think they made the old Xbox1 party game that nobody played.
