No more Big Grey Blob!
Making a custom theme will be useful again!
Also more Metro looking is always good in my book.

Does't look all that different to me other than, yeah, it doesn't go into the background as much... but that doesn't seem like a positive considering it seems to show less now.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze :: Amongst the screen-shots of the dashboard from E3 was a shot of the redesigned (non-kinect) dashboard, which looks a lot like this. So this screenshot may actually be a real preview.

I don't like the green, yes I know it's xbox but I don't like the green tiles everywhere. They would look nice if they weren't the only color. They should let us set our own colours (green, blue, black, white, red, orange, pink). Also, it's odd that the music marketplace channel is seperate from the other marketplaces (IX, Friends; in betweent).

Or maybe they've just decided to take out the Music Marketplace altogether, realizing that no one wants to download shitty Lil Wayne videos.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Closer inspection it goes through the menu options vertically but then you go through the selections horizontally with a very plain appearance.. Reminds me a lot of another interface I use daily, which goes through the menu options horizontally but the selections are done vertically , oh yeah the XMB.. Except now its not even trying to hide the fact that its its a rip off of the xmb as its a straight vertical / horizontal affair..

I was looking for pics of xmb and I came across this:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/sony-no-plans-to-change-xmb-or-offer-netflix-service/

Funny thing in that article, Andrew asks for the following:
"... Now if only Sony would add Hulu to the XMB . " .... .... ....

Anyway, so now the xbox 360s is made out of shiny black plastic it uses touch sensitive buttons and it has wifi and a hdd built in, it also has a new interface which after their third attempt looks even more like the XMB.. Why not just rename it the KIRF PS3 and be done with it ?

Microsoft has been using that kind of UI since the inception of Windows Media PC. So I do not think they copied anybody.

@(Unverified) actually the PSX came out in 2003 with the XMB... Windows XP Media Center Edition was released in 2004. So, it's still possible that Microsoft copied Sony's design.

@McDuckScrooged Sony invented up/down and left/right movement for menus, everybody knows that, not going to argue with you there. The world is also in debt to Sony for discovering that if you remove light reflection you get black, and that shiny black looks cool on electronics. In fact, if I remember correctly, the idea of touch-sensitive buttons is also a Sony technology, that they invented shortly after they invented video. If Microsoft didn't want to be blatant copy-cats, they should have made the system a brand new color and made all navigation some sort of diagonal/depth hybrid, but instead they're posers.

@jsx92 So how many consoles before the ps3 were made out of black glossy plastic and used touch sensitive buttons ? For that matter, which other console manufacturer has used cross media navigation ?

I love it.. The 360s the Keeping It Real Fake PS3 wannabe ;)

You know for someone who must love the PS3 so much, you seem to have quite a chip on your shoulder about them inspiring emulation.

I have a PS3 and 360 and I must say I like the PS3's navigation and style much better than the 360s. So to hear that the 360 might be emulating it (whether it be coincidence or intentional, who cares?) makes me happy.

Oh no! Now 360 owners might have a navigation system that is also simple and well designed! What ever shall you do!?

Especially for XBL Gold accounts. I get the advertisements for Silver accounts, but if my account is Gold and I use Netflix nearly every goram day, do I really need a Netflix advertisement every second or third menu row?

I guess Sony must be copying Microsoft then, since the current slim PS3 uses regular push-buttons, not touch-sensitive buttons. Plus its finish is matte, not gloss.

Try looking at the picture before you make such stupid comments. WMC interface is the exact same concept. Up and down to choose menus, left and right to choose sub-menus.

No sense in telling you this, you've already acknowledged that fact and chosen to go with the ignorant/stupid ploy in order to (fail)troll. Pathetic.

@delicatessen lama I know it's homebrew, but check out http://teamfsd.com. They're basically making a revamped version of their homebrew dashboard - but the customization is simply amazing, and I really think Microsoft could take some ideas from what they're doing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gk809g552o&feature=player_embedded

Everything on the dashboard can be accessed via the [xbox guide button.

I have no reason to touch my dashboard unless I actually want to see whats new and availiable, you can literally bypass it all through the quick menu.

Seriously, I can't believe this bothers people. I've never noticed the ads so I just turned on my 360 to find out wtf everyone was talking about. There's like one actual ad hidden like 4 slides back in one of the categories (for Ford).

So are people talking about the notifications about new stuff becoming available on XBL being ads or something?. Stuff like "Deathspank now available", etc? Those are a good thing, they keep us apprised of new content and have made me aware of something I wouldn't otherwise have been aware of more times than I can count.

So really, wtf are people talking about?

What I never get are these people who seem to think that paying for gold means that live should be ad-free? I mean, are these people just using a jump to conclusions mat? I do not understand where this comes from, it's just a gong show non sequitur and makes no sense. I barely ever notice ads on live.

I have to agree with you here. Again, perhaps it's because I'm not in the US but I've never found the ads to be particularly bothersome. I certainly don't regard news and updates about new games/content being available as ads.

Though I definitely think Gold members at least should have the ability to customise their layout a little more and deactivate channels they don't want.

I'm sure this isn't the final design for the new UI anyway, it seems everyone's forgotten about the one they showed off during E3 running with Kinect.

It stands to reason that depending on when these screens were taken, its quite possible that MS internally was still using "NATAL". :P

However, it seems a bit....to ....non-flashy to be the "next" thing.

@Mattchewie actually microsoft wasn't sure what they were going to call what is now known as kinect...according to an ign podcast i heard (yes ign...sorry) somebody said that the day before the kinect reveal they still had no idea on the final name....the game kinectimals had an alternate poster titled natilimals

and that aaron greenberg and others were still calling it natal...which means that either they had just come up with the name or that they were just very used to natal

@VibrationON I seriously doubt there will ever be a Blu-Ray drive attachment for the 360 or any other future Microsoft console.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Microsoft adopt HD-DVD discs for their next-gen format, and then just rely on pushing streaming and downloads for their movie offerings.
