Tim Schafer: Brutal Legend 2 isn't happening
41
During his recent Develop panel, Tim Schafer -- creator of Brütal Legend and head of Double Fine Productions -- revealed that the potential for a sequel to Jack Black's journey through a fantastical world of rockitude is nonexistent. "Apparently when they said it was a done deal, they meant there was no deal, and we're done," he told attendees.
Double Fine fans shouldn't mourn the game's loss, however; the studio is currently at work on four new titles, so it's not like Schafer is riding off into the sunset -- unless that's part of one of the four games Double Fine is working on, in which case you heard it here first.

I think Dave's really upset because he's forced to write up articles for Joystiq, rather than comment on them. This was his chance to finally prove to the internets that he was first; and so, with the might of his pen, Dave Hinkle claimed that position with a proud "FIRST" at the end of his post.
Congratulations Dave. You are my hero.

I'm ok with this. Good game though. Every game isn't a trilogy. Some shit should be stand alone.

Well why mourning, you can remember the good times in style as this game is currently 10$NZD over here in New Zealand (of course) I think that's about 7 of your US dollars.

@gaboose I would say so if nothing more but for the soundtrack itself, but it is a decent game also & for 10$NZD you cant go wrong, right?

I hated the RTS elements in the game, to be honest. Solid game otherwise, shame we won't see something new.

RTS was the problem.; not everybody likes RTS. I think that if they only kept the hack&slash element, it would have attracted more gamers.

Ugh, I always hate these 'sequel is not happening' announcements. On the one hand there's closure, on the other it's somewhat nice to have that faint hope that it might happen one day.

@RadiantViper
So you prefer futile hope to the developer actually coming out and telling you that they won't make a sequel?
Uh....ok.
Add this game to the list of other failures from high profile developers this generation: Lair, Haze, Too Human, Alpha Protocol, and now Brutal Legend.
It's nice to see that this generation the customers are refusing to reward bad gameplay. "Potential" isn't enough.

The characters were great in BL, but gameplay sucked so much it deserved it's critical reviews. I didn't care for the noise (aka music) either. Things didn't help either when Tim S. released a statement only days after the game's release to all the critics, saying: "you're playing it wrong". Not a fan.

So... was this like a burning question in the gaming community. "Is there going to be a Brutal Legend 2"
I mean why announce that, the first one was mediocre at best...

Agreed, I loved it, but not every can/should be turned into a franchise.

That's true. At least Brutal Legend ended on a high note. Pun intended. =)

Good game but I would consider it a significantly flawed one. In the end it felt too much like a series of repetitive mini games (which is what most games are but they usually aren't so obvious about it).

While I'd dig another brutal legend game he's working on 4 more games. I know not everyone loved brutal legend but I found it a fun and interesting game, despite not being a fan of heavy metal music.

The game ate some serious scrotum, I'm glad they are putting it to rest.

I really tried to like Brutal Legend, but in the end I realized I was just playing the game to finish it and not enjoying it.
Good luck to Tim's next projects though.

Unfortunately, despite the hype and my intention to fully love it, I gotta say that game was a big fat disappointment and I never finished. I would like a sequel if only they would make it be the game we all thought we were getting the first time.. Too bad. It had a lot of potential.

Good. I hate Jack Black. He doesn't need to star or be in anything else. Ever again.

Schafer even said he doesn't like sequels. Full Throttle could've had a great sequel, and Psychonauts was totally set up for a sequel. Neither happened.

That's what happens when you grossly overhype a game and then it doesn't sell well.

As much as I freakin' loved Brutal Legend, I can accept that there won't be a sequel. Hell, if I consider it, BL might be my fave game of all time. It was a goddamned masterpiece.
I realize though that the reason I like it is why there can't be a sequel. Loved, loved, loved Full Throttle, but the story is done. Creativity doesn't cotton onto something and just churn out sequels. (*cough* Activision *cough*)
It makes something awesome and when it's done, it goes off and makes something ELSE that's entirely different and possibly awesome as well.
Whatever else Double Fine brings out, I'll be there, because regardless of the IP, they have the creativity that makes stuff great.
