The Mob loses: Microsoft cancels 1 vs. 100
82
Microsoft will not be holding a third season of 1 vs. 100 on Xbox Live. Kotaku confirmed the sad news with Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager Dave McCarthy, who said, "We're very proud of the 1 vs 100 team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming." The game's Xbox.com page has the image pictured above, simply stating, "A fond farewell ... thank you from the team."
Microsoft will now apply the technology that kept 100,000 players in the game concurrently on "new projects that will be unveiled in the future." We wish Microsoft had polled the mob before pulling the plug on the popular program.

while another game show would be awesome!
the whole " Microsoft will now apply the technology that kept 100,000 players in the game concurrently on "new projects that will be unveiled in the future." thing makes me speculate on lots of things like ya know that Halo mmo or 100,000 player deathmatch in halo or well what ever comes out of it, it will probably be tacked on a halo game

What I read in this article:
MIcrosoft: Thank you guys for making us lots of money, however...the sales have been dwindling as of the late, so as of right now we are canceling this game and using the servers for more lucrative opportunities.
Now, the team responsible for this game since we no longer need you, your fired, you ain't gotta go home, but you have to get the f%#$ out of here.

More than likely, it will be something Kinect-based and casual friendly. Which could prove interesting . . . you know, having 100,000 players simultaneously connected to the game using Kinect. All kinds of ideas come to mind for a game show type game. But also all sorts of ideas come to mind for a more traditional type game . . . one that obviously skews casual friendly.

Good. I liked it BEFORE it got big and trendy. It was my own little thing and then the masses and casuals got a hold of it.

@Uncontrol I'm just joking. I only outgrew the game because it was too easy, not because it was a hit. Seriously, no can match me in music, soccer or UFC knowledge.

"It was still popular so I'd like to know why they've cancelled it."
Because Microsoft finally determined that once they implemented subscription fees for the game, the userbase would drop so much that it would no longer be fun to play.
Whatever "new projects" Microsoft unveils based on the technology, you can rest assured there will be a pay-to-play component.

They were (and still are, as the process is ongoing) having a lot of problems with prizes. My girlfriend won a copy of Lode Runner for XBLA around Christmas and is still trying to receive it.
Probably not the whole reason, but I'd wager that it's one of the contributing factors.

Sad panda. I really enjoyed playing this, especially with a big group of people surrounding the 360 all shouting out answers. Huge shame.
Watch it show up on the PS3.
In other news, anyone win points or a game last season and still haven't gotten their prize? I won Rez HD for being in the Top 3 in the crowd and later won about 400, maybe 600 points in the Mob and still haven't gotten either prize. According to the response I got from an e-mail my question was a "billing question" and I have to call Microsoft. Really? Just gimmie my winnings!

Who the hell is running the asylum at MGS? Cancelled games. Horribly incomplete sequels. Game Room falling on its face. Its a shame to see what J Allard and Peter Moore crafted falling into depravity.
My guess with 1 vs 100 is that Sprint was no longer interested in dropping money to sponsor the game. Still, someone should have been able to find a buyer...

@dbldn Game Room falling on it's face? Really? You check out the new update? They made it so much better now. Now they just need more variety of games from arcade and different consoles. Which I'm sure is coming. And I did love 1 vs. 100. I hope they create something similar. Soon! =]

@dbldn I just realized that the original show has been rumored to make a return (see http://buzzerblog.flashgameshows.com/format-update-baggage-1-vs-100-and-pass-the-joke/ for details), so maybe it was a licensing issue in the end.

This absolutely sucks! 1 vs 100 was a great game, a great show, and a great bridge between core, casual, and even non gamers.
I played it. My friends played it. My brother, wife, and mom played it. It was the perfect game to play alone or online with 3 friends, or online with 7 friends in party chat, or on the couch with 10 people (what? I have a gigantic couch).
I will only excuse this travesty if it's replaced with You Don't Know Jack LIVE

Agreed.
When you get 2 teams worth of people in one room you are bound to have crazy win streaks and plenty of fun.
They better make something of that promise to use what they've learned.

This concept of having a weekly game show via the console was awesome. There were days that I forgot about it & my wife (total non-gamer) would freak & remind me to flip on the 360 & get in the game...
I really hope they expand this idea in general.

Well, if they wanted to make Game Room more successful...we need Solomon's Key, Rolling Thunder, Icari Warriors and Star Wars Vector game.

Their system to get in the running for prizes was really bad. I played it with my sis for a couple weeks, and we were seeing the same Live accounts up on stage and in the mob over and over again. It was fun for a few weeks, but after we found out that others were putting in stupid amounts of hours that no full-time working person could compete with, we were done.
I would have probably played some of the themed episodes on the weekdays too, but they were all set for Pacific time zone. Again, when you have a job you get up at 5:45 the next morning for, staying up to 11:30 to field a few horror movie questions is just stupid.

This is why I never played it past the beta/first season. Great concept, horrible execution. It should have just pulled players randomly from those "active" in the lobby for the mob, and then pulled 1 of them for the hot seat, and the next round pulled 100 new people (if previously selected that week/prior round then you wouldn't be eligible) and so on and so forth, that way you were more likely to see different people each round, and it was more like an actual game show.

I'm a little disappointed that it's cancelled, but then again I got my 200 gamerscore out of it, and it was free (as in, I didn't even buy the Live subscription that got me those points-- I'd won the sub in a contest a few months prior).
I'm aligning myself with those wanting more and newer games using the supermassively-multiplayer framework that 1v100 created.
