Capcom announced that Mega Man Universe, first seen as a trademark, is the name of a new PSN/XBLA Mega Man game. Despite the existence of a trailer, details about the actual game are vague -- the trailer shows stop-motion footage of Capcom characters, including Street Fighter's Ryu and Ghosts & Goblins' Arthur, teaming up with Mega Man in a spontaneously appearing arcade, suggesting that the game itself is a Capcom crossover experience. At one point, a Ryu/Arthur/Mega Man amalgam can be seen!
"This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be," producer Keiji Inafune said in the announcement. "When fans finally get to see it, I believe they'll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true." The Capcom tagline is "imagination is the star of the game." Watch the trailer after the break (courtesy of Gamespot) and try to imagine what kind of game this will turn out to be.
What's the bet they are going to stick other Capcom brand characters in a mega man platformer style game. (WTF would Ryu turn into with Splash Woman's power??)
If they do this....I'm buying it TWICE! One for me, and one for somebody I know that missed out on the old school.
@ShadowXIII I think it could be good if it was an actual Mega Man game, and not some over done Marvel v. Capcom idea. I may be alone in saying this, but I'm getting kinda tired of Marvel vs. Capcom or Capcom vs. the Universe or Capcom vs. Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness....I mean seriously, where does it end?!?
@quarlie We'll have more details on the fist day of comic-con!
"See the latest trailers and get the inside scoop on all of Capcom's most highly anticipated games for 2010 and beyond: Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Sengoku Basara, Okamiden, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, Ghost Trick, Dead Rising 2, and more. On top of all that, hear details on an exciting new game announcement by Capcom legend Keiji Inafune, the father of Mega Man!"
My world? Megafied? I wonder.... I hope its not me running around that kids room. In all cerealness though, looks like a sidescroller where you can change out the character for diffrent skill sets, like arthur shooting at an angle, Ryu's uppercut, and megaman's ability to shoot three bullets straight. I am an obnoxious megaman fan, though, so its got me sold. DEATHSPANK FTW!!!
Side scrolling is fine when its not generic and redundant (the one after dawn of sorrow was horrid, CV:OOE is pretty good, Zero 3 was weak the one after it was weaker).
I am not against solid classic game design I am against poor redundant and generally weak classic game regurgitation, old is fine make it into a dead horse to rape and I am not ok with it.
@ZippyDSMlee really? i played mega man zero 1 and enjoyed it. 2 was much better, so i was thinking of trying the zero collection. how could they ruin it?
zero 1 was great 2 was so so, MMX7 was meh X8 and X9 WTF. I hate to say it but transfomrers war for cybertron is a better megaman like game than most of the last few MM games.
The world needs more Mega Man X... as long as it's 16-bit MMX. The PS1 titles were ok (MMX4-MMX6) but X7 and X8 were shit.
I've always preferred the graphical style of 16-bit MMX (as well as MM7) to the NES style of MM1-6 and 9/10. The PS1 and polygon graph styles were just overkill for the series.
In fact, with Capcom's "focus" on changing out characters via their versus series, this seems like a natural, if not curious evolution to a fun and working formula. My dream would be calling in assists and switching out my characters and micromanageing health and abilities to acomplish crazy battles! So long as the trade out for characters is quick, it can be a real fast and fernetic 2d scroller! I hope all the enemies look and die super creepy like in the trailer!
Capcom, I'm still in love with you after all these years. Words like: cartridge, childhood, and joy spring to mind when I hear your name. Ever since that first game of Mega-Man 2 you've had me at "power-up"! I wonder if this is going to use the new Sony and Microsoft gadgets to let the user play with there old capcom games like that pet monkey game? It could be like some of those mods we have seen where the player can use different characters in different games. Anyone else think they looked like Dino Stamatopoulos (of Moral Orel fame) claymation things? Box art Mega Man for the win!
Was Arthur a referee? Cause he's pretty superfluous amongst a team featuring Ryu and Mega Man. I'm not discounting Arthur's awesomeness, of course. He can do some serious damage in those boxers!
@Octoplus There is nobody in Capcom's roster more "hard-core" than Arthur. Most punishing game series evar! I am haunted by images of a hairy man in boxers til this day.
@The Wicker Man Hahaha! I'm right there with you, man! To me, G&G is right up there with Donkey Kong. Such an unforgiving game! But fun nonetheless. I guess I was just saying in terms of character design he seems a little out place. Or maybe a guy in a gi seems more out of place now that I think of it.
