Sony: PS3 retail shortages have been 'resolved'

According to a statement issued by Sony yesterday alongside the publication of the NPD Group's June sales report, the PS3 shortages cited by GameStop in its Q1 earnings report have been "resolved." No explanation for the resolution was given in said statement, though we imagine it has something to do with making more consoles and delivering them to stores at a faster pace.

Perhaps this particular resolution had something to do with the PS3's 97 percent rise in sales during the month of June. Then again, every piece of gaming hardware saw pretty significant increases in sales last month. Was everyone experiencing a recently resolved shortage? We're super glad we stocked up early.

The shortages were of the cheaper model. At least in my area for a few months it was near impossible to find stores with the $299 SKU.

Shortages were resolved 45 days ago, right after E3, after Sony managed to lower manufacturing cost, they increased production and shortages were addressed.

Shortages occured because Sony was not willing to produce more consoles using old CPU which was more expensive to make and was taking away from making profit on each console.

Now that Sony actually makes money on each console they produce, they were able to increase production speed.

Shortages were easily visible on Best Buy, Amazon, SonyStyle, GameStop and Walmart websites, they were constantly out of stock or back ordered, for almost 3 months.

If you aren't looking for a PS3, you obviously won't notice the shortage. I went to Bestbuy, Target and Wal-Mart looking for one, and didn't find any. Amazon had them Buy New from other sellers at around $400.

It was an actual real shortage, but i guess your 360-loving eyes couldn't notice.

As an employee at a major electronics chain, I have not noticed any stock problems/customers who came to get a PS3 but were turned away because we were out of stock.

ubercharged, I have a really hard time believing this. Even amazon.com, one of the most powerful retailers in world history, has had repeated and long term difficultly keeping up with demand. The PS3, worldwide, is extremely popular and it 's good to see Sony is finally meeting this demand.

Anyone who denies the shortage is just being a kook. Just go buy yourself a PS3 already. It's way more fun than fighting the old console war.

3 months ago I had a hard time finding one for a friend, we visited around 3 Best Buys and 5 Gamestops without luck.

... There were PS3 shortages? When? I must've slept through that...

It's obviously just in certain areas. Here in Alberta, Canada I've never noticed shortages either. I was able to walk in to Besy Buy and just pick one up from a stack of them. All 3 of the consoles are readily available everywhere here.

great... now maybe they can go about addressing other product shortcomings like that pesky ps2 support that seems to have gone missing some time back when these "shortages" popped up.

Back in May, my phat died, so I had a hard time finding a Slim. Kmart.com and Sears were some of the only places that had just the console in stock (not a bundle or anything).

Glad they are finally done with the shortages, now they can get some better bundles.

Since when was there a PS3 shortage!?
Where I come from, they've all been discounted since the day they came out.
Mine was AU$325 with LittleBigPlanet and component cables. Second hand, but still. If they were rare, wouldn't they be a little more expensive than that?

I need to get a slim. It's too hot during the day to play, and it gets blowdryer-angry at me if I even try it.

Launch system, by the way.
