R.I.P. Wii Virtual Console 2006 to 2010. It was good for the first couple of years, and then it slowly, but surely died an ignominious death. At times like this, I want to yell "SERENITY NOW!!!"

@therandomizer

I think the Virtual Console is going to become part of WiiWare and will continue but more infrequent.

So Nintendo is finally giving us a game with Krystal, Renamon, Rogue, Amy, and Aisha ClanClan?

Ok, not really.

What makes me mad is that there are so many games that people want on the Virtual Console that that Nintendo refuses to release. I would love the original Star Fox released. Or a few of the really good fishing games for the SNES. They have an entire back catalogue of their own games which would pose no licensing issues, but they won't release them. I seriously don't understand this as releasing these games (the first party ones) is about as simple as packagaing the ROM, whipping up the emulator for the system (if it can't simply share the emulator for other games on the same system. It should be simply considering it's their own systems) and writing the HTML manual to be included. It isn't Steam where the original company has to want to releasse it, and have to go thru an approval process. Note, I am talking about Nintendo titles, not second or third party titles.

@Drakkenfyre

It really boggles the mind that they have instant cash in VC games with no reprogramming required and don't bother releasing them. But they support these WiiWare and DSi titles that are borderline pathetic and most of them can't possibly break even. It's a senseless affair.

If they actually made good WiiWare games like Capcom making Mega Man 9 and 10 then I wouldn't mind at all. What about a Super Mario 4 follow up from the NES Super Mario 3? That would absolutely ROCK! There's so much unused potential here.

I have loved Nintendo ever since I was a kid. I have owned every system they have released except the Game Boy Micro, original DS, and DSi (was waiting for the next system which I knew was coming.) But their online implementation sucks. The SNES was supposed to have multiplayer gaming. It had a port for multiplayer communications. It never happend with Nintendo, and it died with the X-Band. The Nintendo 64 had an abortive attempt in the 64DD in Japan. It died quickly. The GameCube's online titles can be counted on one hand. And the Wii has a terrible Friends based system which limits players severely. If you so much as buy a second copy of some games, the Friends code changes.

While the other companies have established nice networks and refined their online multiplayer, Nintendo is still sitting around, looking at the concept, and trying to make the airplane.

Nintendo's not refusing to release them. There's re-licensing issues and all sorts of loops needed to jump through.

I said first party titles. Something like Star Fox, yes, you would have to get an agreement with Argonaut Software, but there are tons of Nintendo-developed and published titles which would not pose any licensing issues.

@Shadow Hog

I have NSMB Wii, and I don't live in Japan so I don't care what their numbering system is. To the point, WiiWare and VC are leagues behind Xbox live Arcade and PSN's offerings and it honestly shouldn't be for any reason.

Is that a Weighted Companion Cube in the screenshot gallery for Furry Legends?

If the VC isn't dead, I don't know what it is. I know there are licensing issues with certain SNES/NES games and all, but even so, there's still no reason to phase out the Virtual Console. They should at least release some decent N64 games, like Goemon's Great Adventure, Mystical Ninja 64, Bomberman 64-2, but I know they won't.

Really? Nintendo and third parties have been giving better support to DSiWare so far than to WiiWare, at least as far as i can tell.

Honestly? I've bought tons of things on the DSiWare. It ain't for everybody, but there's definitely a good amount of good-to-great games found on the DSiWare. ... hell, it's getting more support than the WiiWare is.

I'm just glad that nothing has come out that I want.

I don't want to give up my Homebrew Channel until it's absolutely necessary, which might be Metroid: Other M or at least LOZ Skyward Sword.

As to the lack of VC games, Nintendo probably realized that with the bang up job MS is doing with Game Room they lost the market on retro games.

@dcfox I'm gonna have to agree with you; the VC has been abandoned; XLBA and PSN seem to be doing much better anyways. There are other, shady methods of getting SNES/N64 games to run on the wii...that is if people don't mind voiding the warranty (and turning off WiiConnect24).
