After the initial disappointment with the first Spore game, I don't think this would get me to buy a copy.

I wonder if Maxis is a shell of what it use to be after Will Wright left.

PS- Still waiting for Maxis to step up and make SimCity 5.

You are right about Maxis, as someone who still plays spore I can tell you that almost no one is working on spore and with the rate of new Sims content appearing slower than in previous iterations, I seriously think Maxis is pretty much a skeleton crew nowadays.

I was just thinking about a new sim city game the other day. I dont know if they can make a 1 as good without Will Wright.

@MrAlex

Keep in mind that Sims is no longer run by Maxis. Sims 3 was Black Box (if I remember correctly) and Sims 2 has been given to some other EA subsidiary. So you can't really blame Maxis for the lack of Sims updates.

And this is both upsetting and interesting. I liked what Spore had going, even if the final product was pretty mediocre. I mean, it had major potential to be something really interesting and unique, and it just kinda sounds like they stripped the potential out and went with something that we already have a lot of. And yet, it sounds like it could potentially be fun, in that "50 Cent Blood on the Sand" kinda way.

@ebonydad It does seem like this particular project has the kind of focus that Spore really needed.

It also lacks the creative spark that might allow for a world-changing hit. But in the grand scheme of things, it will probably be a better "game" game.

@mrfusspot Oh right, since I never got SIms 3 I didn't actually know that, thanks for the correction.

I guess it makes my point even stronger though.

Hopefully they stick to a concept and not try to be five different and mediocre game genres in one

I really hope this is good. I want as many Diablo-styled games as I can get while I wait for Diablo III since it probably won't come out for another five years.

I'd prefer "Spore meets Star Control, minus running around putting out fires."

Seriously, if they'd bothered to put more than two weeks of effort into the Galaxy mode of Spore, it would have been a great game. As it was, I was left with the nagging feeling that Wil Wright had been replaced with Peter Molyneaux and no one bothered to tell the rest of us.

Except when Molyneux makes a game it's at least somewhat good when compared to the hype. Spore definitely didn't live up to the hype in the slightest.

This looks great. Spore gets a bad rap but I loved the original game.

@Prince David

Yeah but did you read about how limited customisation is in the article, that is the only thing that kept me on spore, I know that the gameplay will be better to compensate, but 2/3 years down the line from original I'd expect more.

@MrAlex Wow has it really been that long already? Time does fly. I do like Diablo-esque games but I admit I would prefer a full out sequel. They could learn a lot from Little Big Planet's community.

@Prince David I looked up now and it's been just under 2 years for actual just over 2 for the creature creator.

I'll play it.

...mainly because it looks like most of us will be *DEAD* before Diablo III finally comes out. I think, maybe, other developers are sick of waiting too.

Coffee chat: "Do you know when Diablo III is coming out?", "I dunno was supposed to be last September according to rumors...", "F(%K IT, lets go make our own!"

So this is what happens when Will Wright leaves. I don't see how this is considered part of the Spore series, the main feature was building your own creatures. If they removed that it becomes just like any other RPG.

What happened to the first spore? It seems like EA pretty much abandoned it. Before release they claimed that the "engine was built to support expansions" but here we are almost 3 years later and we have only had 1 expansion pack (and it wasn't that great either). I'm imagining that they would be treating this like a new game if they are using a new engine, so this is technically the "successor" to Spore, not just a spin off. I find that disappointing because the original Spore had so much potential.

So am I going to be able to design all the enemies (or at least the more generic, typically non-boss ones) myself using the creature creator? If not, then this game has no relevance to me.

Wow, never mind. For some reason I assumed there wasn't going to be more info after the break. Apparently you can't even design your own character creature. Yeah, that's a pretty straight-forward fail right from the get-go in my books. They might as well just call the game "Dark." I'd be surprised if such a terribly generic name didn't end up suiting the game nicely.

What the hell are you talking about? Also, comparing Mass Effect 2 to Modern Warfare 2 is like comparing pineapples to oranges.

"Quick, guys! We need a name for a game /like/ Spore, but different - cooler. Darker, if you will."

"Could we call it... Dark... Spore?"

"Genius! Darkspore! That's why we pay you the big bucks."

"That's right -- although based off of Spore (but running on a brand-new engine) the game won't have you controlling your own creations."
WHAT

So much wasted potential. Better play Torchlight.
