@Accessgranted When Microsoft released their new and improved model for the same price as the one that then became discounted, people still flocked to get the discounted model.

...Just think of what would happen if Kinect was going to sell for less than $150

I don't think it was the price that got people to buy it more than it was the availability of the new 360. I waited weeks before I was able to get mine. So technically, yes, the discounted arcade would sell better. DUH!

Hummm. . . you vs Patcher. Who do I trust less? Well you inserted the word "DUH!" (in full capslock no less) in your comment. So you lose by default.

Patcher is basically saying the same thing. All he does is state what we all think & get's paid for it.

Same here. I preordered the week after E3 and it took two weeks to get it.

I don't get why Joystiq keeps calling it "short". It really is slimmer than the 360 when it's standing up. They have pictures there to prove it yet they still can't see it?

But it's not as huge as different compared to the height, it's not like the PS# vs the PS3 Slim where the slimness was very apperant

Well yes that's true but I actually have the new 360 & I compared it to the regular 360 & I didn't believe it looked that much smaller until I saw it inperson. Its not a extremely big difference but it's still clearly visable.

@Loucetios the PS3 Slim was not slim. the PS2 slim, now that was slim. the PS3 slim is only slim because the PS3 fat was monstrously fat.

@onlysublime

Oh stop it, the PS3 Slim is totally slim. The only reason that you would say it isn't is because of those anorexic PS2 models out there. We have an unrealistic notion of how tiny a console has to be to be considered beautiful because of how the media portrays the consoles. Really, the PS3 Slim does not need to lose any more weight. It should work on its self esteem and feeling good about how its appearance just as it is. :P

On a more serious note, Slim refers to relative size to the predecessor. So the Playstations are definitely slimmer. The 360 Short may be a bit narrower at its more narrow point but it's definitely more shorter than slimmer. See http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/visual-comparison-of-xbox-360-and-xbox-360-slim-er-short/

On an even more serious note, I love my original PS3, stop insulting her. She's not fat, she's curvy. :)

You couldn't even buy an Xbox 360 Slim in June. I preordered mine in June for $50 from Gamestop but had to wait two weeks until they finally got them in stock.

To be fair, Pachter's counting in the whole month, while the discounts and new model were only introduced halfway through. If we pared it down to June 15th or so, the S may have performed better.

Duh?

"Here, here's two systems. Both play the same games. One's cheaper. Which one do you want?"

Does Pachter get paid for such things such as "If you eat you will shit", "People like making money", and "Sex leads to kids" ?

Yeah, but you left out 'one of them has a f***ing huge-arse power supply that occupies most of your entire room' and 'one of them makes a noise like a jet engine when you're trying to play games' and 'one of them will probably only work for six months' (ok, I think that doesn't really apply to recent models, but still).

If I were buying one I sure as hell wouldn't buy the old model. So what these sales tell us is that people are more interested in price discounts than in the improved quality of the newer model. Not surprising, sure - but not entirely a non-fact. (For instance I dunno about the US stats, but in Japan, DSi LL sells more than regular DSi despite that it plays exactly the same games and costs more.)

Most people are idiots. Also, most people don't know the difference between one or the other. "Hey look, it's black and shorter!" is the extent of the knowledge some people possess. You just repeated what I said. It's cheaper, so it sells more.

Just like off-brand crap, "Here, here's a controller which is cheap as hell, will break on you, feel like crap, and the sticks will wear out in one week, but it's cheaper, which one do you want?" "The cheap one."

In Japan new tech is usually snapped up despite the price simply for being "new tech", so the new DSi, despite being more expensive, is seen as better, and I am sure the larger screen doesn't hurt.

What I'm saying is that there's a balance between quality and cost - if the new 360 had been *much* better for some reason, people would've been more excited by that than by the price cuts. DSi LL (which, um, just made the screen a bit bigger) seems to have been enough to tip that balance. 360 Short seems not to have been, or not initially. Both systems play exactly the same games as their predecessors. So I don't think the different results are 100% predictable. Maybe 90%...

You'd think this'd show that everyone is way late in properly dropping their system prices this gen, but instead, the big three just stick their fingers in their ears and go "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA".

Consider this:
At this point in last gen, you could own a GameCube, A dreamcast,an XBOX, and a PS2, all for the low, low, low price of around $350-ish or so.
Microsoft seems to want to do everything it can to never drop it's price, Nintendo is just being Nintendo, and Sony started at an absurdly high price to begin with.

@Red Son Rising What about 4GBs and a 16GB thumbdrive? I've replaced my 20GB launch HDD with a 16GB thumbdrive and its actually made a nice speed bonus. Being able to use a thumbdrive as your primary hdd is actually a pretty damn cool feature.

I bought an arcade for $130 at Target w/ a $30 gift card making it effectively $100. It was to replace my launch core unit which other than being loud, ran just fine. Hell, I get a new 1 year warranty and 3 years against the RROD. Saving $200 bucks seemed like a no-brainer to me.
