And of course, the imitation lacks the comic timing that made the original good.

Two words: Hom... age
It feels more to me like they just tried to parody a popular and humorous commercial. I mean how many times have we seen the same thing on TV here in the US. Network TV using familar faces and catchphrases from established commercials is a common occurrence. Now if it were some 3rd rate regional game system they were trying to sell I'd call it a ripoff, but as it is, just advertising the monday night movie of the week lineup, it's nothing more than a parody.

Parody: a literary or artistic work that mimics in an absurd of ridiculous way the conventions and style of another work. Also known as travesty, lampoon, or burlesque.

It would be really funny if ad agencies started openly pitching the same ideas to different companies. I would love to see what other companies would get the new Old Spice commercials and replicate them. Imagine a Best Buy employee walking through store aisles in quick shots talking about merchandise like the Old Spice guy does.

Well being a NZ'er I saw this add on TV the other night, there is also a longer version of it, but remember thinking that it was pretty similar to the Kevin Butler add's. Though since Kevin Butler is part of Playstation's U.S marketing we don't get 'his' add's aired over here, so most people here wouldn't know its a copy (unless your a gamer of course:) ).

I remember another ad (possibly series of ads) that was playing back in NZ a while back which blatently ripped off a reoccuring skit from UK's The Fast Show. I think it was the "Anyone fancy a pint?" guy.

Yeah that's just how our creative "talent" roles.

Somebody's jealous...
