"cops will get on you for anything that might be deemed ... inappropriate. That includes running red lights, speeding and, say, driving over an errant pedestrian every now and then."

Holy crap, this is something I really really wanted in GTA IV. I wasn't following this game at all before, but now I need to find more!

Another thing I always wanted was working turn signals.... the AI never freaking stops to let you turn :(

I can understand why you wan't those things, but personally that would remove any fun from the game for me. Not being able to drive quickly without getting additional attention from cops, while realistic, would really limit my ability to mess around in what is supposed to be a sandbox.

Just like certain features and tweaks which were added for realism in GTA IV killed that game for me.

@Acosta02 Oh actually since this isn't a sandbox I guess the features could work.

seriously, you should play the first mafia. It actually works well like timed missions were theres the added aspect of figuring out when you can get away with speeding etc.
+you can always just pay the fine you get

@MrAlex I've thought about this quite a lot. I share Acosta02's opinion about GTA IV's unrealistic police behavior. Between that and the lack of animals and children, there's a glaring but fixable gap in the realistic world they created for that game. So, how GTA V fix this? I think Red Dead Redemption indicates Rockstar can add the children and animal elements to the game techology-wise now. To keep realistic police behavior from breaking the fun of the game, I think all they'd need to do is have a bribe/blackmail/respect system in place that kicks in 5-10 hours into the game that slackens the rules. Maybe you can still get pulled over, but the cop will leave you alone after walking up to your window and seeing who you are. That would be rad.

(funny sidenote, I know a guy named Alex Acosta).

It looks like Mafia 2 will be this year's Uncharted 2, because of it's epic narrative, and linearity.

@PlayboyX

Are you joking? This game was built on it's cinematics, and linearity. Talking on the 2K forum we're able to talk with the various developers, and they mentioned how Uncharted 2 was a big focus for them.

This game is not a sandbox game. It's purely linear, and the whole aim is to create a epic narrative, with blockbuster cinematics.

In the very lightest sense of the word. The city is only there to support the narrative, the whole narrative is linear, with no distractions at all. Imagine Bioshock, or Uncharted, only set in a large open world, but with linear narrative.

That's basically Mafia for you.

@ToCoolforSchool Whoaaaa, everyone hold their horses! (naayyyyyy) I don't know if I'd call it a "sandbox game" necessarily, but there is a sandbox environment. It's absolutely narrative-driven, and that makes a big difference in terms of it feeling like a linear experience (I would imagine), but it's still got an open-world. Either way, who cares! What I played was a hoot and people who like both sandbox and single-player linear experiences will likely BOTH dig it. At least I think!

I'm really really worried about being pestered by cops for running lights, speeding etc. I can see myself being extremely annoyed with that

@Ty

Don't worry in Mafia 1 it was barely an issue.

Also with Mafia 2, you can just step out of the car, and pay off the cop. It's pretty simply, and easy.

@ToCoolforSchool Ok thanks. I never played Mafia but one thing I liked about the GTA series was that it sometimes remembered you were playing a video game and didn't send cops after you for stuff like that. This is a must buy game for me

Well I've been following Mafia 2 for 7 years already (since it was unofficially announced in 2003). Mafia 1 was hailed for it's well told cinematic story, and since the same director wrote Mafia 2 story, I'm sure it'll be equivalent.

From watching the various gameplay, and trailers the game oozes in atmosphere, and class. Just how Uncharted 2 was.

Like you said we'll see, but I have a strong feeling it will.

Looking forward to this game, its been a while since we've had that extent of realism in a sandbox related to driving. Driver 2 if I recall was the last one to even care about running the lights or speeding.

I want to know how the PS3 version compares to the 360 version, hope it's not another case of Rockstar syndrome.
