while being griefed is never fun and i applaud any effort to curtail it, it does seem kinda ironic since,as joystiq mentions, outlaws are an inescapable part of the Old West.

Yeah, it's kinda weird if you mull it over, psychologically speaking.

You're given a game where you can do some of the most despicable things, but once you start 'cheating' a higher power reigns you in...

I jumped in a Free Roam match and was getting shot out of nowhere and killed over and over. Come to find out that the culprits were glitched inside the geometry of a building and were able to shoot anyone on the map but they couldn't get shot. It was as fun as eating sand. I'm glad they're fixing this.

True but at least in the Ol' Wild West, getting shot at or a noose tends to reduce the number of "griefers", unlike in this game where death isn't permanent.

Yeah, the griefing in this game could get pretty damn bad. It's no biggie if you are shot a couple times in a row, but when the number starts climbing and you are just stuck - someone needs to lend a hand to make it fun again.

@Faenix I've never really noticed anyone actually playing online.

I haven't played this online in about a month, but when I was playing it there was no-one about, and I would join a 'quick game', but it would be only me. I've only had a couple of rounds were there were actually other players playing. Are there more people playing now?

Going for that be most wanted for 10 mins trophy was crazy fun, me and my posse vs another posse vs the law vs few non posse'd peeps.

Made the trophy hard, but it was hella fun XD

I admit that I did a bit of griefing in this game, but have since repented and have spent the past couple of weeks roaming around in a posse, killing anybody we see griefing.

Although the poor victims occasionally start shooting at us after we save them.

Yeah, people need to get it in their heads that free roam is not deathmatch.

Our rule of engagement is to only return fire when fired upon. If the guy chooses to continue to follow/shoot us, then we'll continue to put him down. Hope we don't get punished for defending ourselves from a relentless griefer that cannot get his grief on.

Is it so wrong that I have a habit of killing someone or shooting their horse dead in free roam before switching over to a versus session?

Honestly, this is going to make it more appealing to kill players. There are several challenges that warrant you becoming most wanted - and this will only make it easier to complete those challenges.

I don't see anything wrong with starting fights in Free Roam. Isn't that what it's all about - freedom? Tons of people gang up on me when I'm going for those wanted challenges, and I expect it. That's part of what makes it fun for me.

I expect it when going for a most wanted challenge, but it's a big pain in the butt when you're minding your own business, running around to hideouts, looking for someone to posse up with, etc.

It's fun to get involved with a little PvP gunplay for a bit, but being chased halfway across the map by 2 people with better weapons and horses, when it's completely obvious I'm not interested in putting up a fight, is both boring and frustrating, which are two things a game really shouldn't be...

When you're going for most wanted challenges it's fully expected, because your openly putting a target on your back.
Beyond bounties though, there's a big difference between starting a fight with someone & griefing / spawn camping. I have no problem getting in random shootouts with people, or even getting killed when I'm not expecting it, but some people really go out of their way to ruin the game for players that are just in free roam to do some challenges on their own or to just mess around for awhile.

Example: If the guy your shooting at while he rides by tries to keep riding away instead of getting in a gun fight with you & you still gun him and then go find him when he spawns & kill him again, and again and again...and...again... - you're not "getting in a fight", you're just being a dick.
That’s not directed at you specifically, it’s just that a lot of people try to hide behind the “it’s the old west” argument as an excuse to be a total douche in freeroam. I’ve shot my fair share of random players to start a gunfight, but if they don’t come back after me once they respawn or if they just keep riding, I just let it go & move on instead of getting OCD on their gamertag.

^ This.

I even sent the dude a message saying I was looking for herbs but that didn't make any difference. The prick kept chasing me down and killing me. Thought if I didn't fight back I'd get left alone (which is what I'd do if someone wasn't interested) but that made no difference. Killed him a few times and thought he'd leave me alone but no, didn't make any difference.

It was probably some arrogant little kid who thought it would be fun to pick on me as I was a low level rank. Twat.

Haven't bothered with it since. (Multiplayer).

I completely 100% agree with you. When I'm getting bullied, I just find a new room. Simple. Just because you're doing challenges, etc, doesn't mean you OWN that server. Part of the fun of Free Roam is killing and getting killed. They're called challenges for a reason.

My friend and I sometimes run around a bully people too. Not when they're doing a hideout, but just randomly sitting on the map. It's FUN. They shoot back. And all the while everyone is getting XP.

sounds nicer than "patch," and proactively fixes, whereas a patch is to fix problems, but its basically a patch, though could include something like content, too.

But usually when I'm moseying around people will shoot me for nothing, even when my gun is constantly holstered. Thats ok, I bet it's a bullet that gets the last laugh.

It's about time, I always wondered why you couldn't pick your respawn spot ( well i guess you still can't, but it's a step in the right direction).

It's not so much people killing me that gives me problems, it's just how/where you spawn afterwards.. it's usually like 6 feet away from where you just died... resulting in death over death over death if the other player is being a douche...

yes it makes me rage quit, and yes it's one reason why i barely touch online much anymore.

and yes i am well aware i can play with my friends and avoid these problems, but we all don't have the luxury of having friends with all the same games...

@Omnistatic That's really only a problem at Pike's Basin, all the other places in the game have a multitude of spawn points.

i'm aware that there are multiple points, most of those multiple points are still mostly smack dab in the middle of a field with no cover and within firing distance of anyone with a rifle... especially annoying when the people that keep killing you are on horseback and just plow through you over and over again, knocking you down and shooting ya...

i'm sure it's fun for those on the other end of it.. but for me... RAAAAAGE

They should call the updates something like Federal Marshall mandates and could name the mandates something like Rooster Cogburn's decree... That would be pleasantly entertaining.

I've had griefers come after me a few times.. and it actually ends up being fun. I kill them, they kill me.. back and forth, and when i get bored, i change to a different free roam.. no big deal.

so getting the most wanted trophy is now more easy ... that's not really fair i had to get it the hard way with no boosting and now people who constantly kill and kill and kill you time after time can easily become most wanted, their's even the challenge for getting 10 most wanted and higher and it's just gonna cause more people too kill other players to get the XP from that challenge.

This is a Bad idea things will be more choatic then they are now i think it's a stupid move.

I've never griefed in a game before me and a buddy went on a rampage and camped people in RDR free roam. I know it was a dick thing to do, but I actually felt like a cowboy, hunting down a bounty or something. That being said, I understand why they're fixing it (it was probably miserable on the other end)

First off I've been griefed before on this game, and I have to admit there aren't that many out there, but when you find one you're basically boned, because they will continue to kill you until you leave the session, especially since there isn't any way to hide from them, you appear on the map and you have this huge ass icon over your head, this isn't anything like the real wild west, if that was the case there were far to many outlaws on the loose, seeing all the law would have had to do is open their maps and pow...

As for why this will handle griefers, "earning them a Most Wanted status and wrangling the game's NPCs against the offender. " Having experienced those NPCs I can tell you there better at hounding than Griefers, if they are out in the middle of nowhere they will not last that long because these NPCs are insistent and the only way to avoid them is to be somewhere they can't get to, which means likely you didn't kill the same player 6 times because there are only a couple spots in the game where this is easily done and players know where those spots are and generally avoid them, there are hundreds of other hard to get to spots where NPCs wont find you, but good luck on finding anybody to shoot because nobody goes out of their way to get into these areas.

I could see this being abused by a pair of people who log on and then goes to one of these places the NPCs don't go and then grief one another into Most Wanted to earn the achievement (one at a time of course) but after this is done they'll likely not pull the stunt again because its pointless, other than the fact that it makes it impossible to travel anywhere else.
