thatgamecompany's flOw recreated in StarCraft 2
26
It's been a while since we've seen a really unique application of the dark magic-fueled creation tools behind StarCraft 2, so we're glad the video posted below could come along and decisively end our dry spell. Behold: Origins, a recreation of thatgamecompany's microcosmic PSN title, flOw.
The game, created by Battle.net user Malu05, follows the familiar "eat or be eaten" structure of its inspiration, allowing players' organisms to grow and gain new abilities as they consume smaller prey. It looks pretty neat and, with any luck, will be available to download when StarCraft 2 launches next week.

@Cleric
The first Starcraft had incredible user made maps, they were great to play with friends. In my opinion they had a lot more replay value than the multiplayer normal modes for me and my friends, because they took out the kind of tedious APM and base management and made it all about leading troops most effectively and micro management.
And they had great custom heroes, specialized for groups of friends to coordinate with each other.
Hopefully SCII will live up to the first one in this regard.

@ripoff yes sir, you are right...maxis already copypasted "fl0w", no reason for anyone to do it again
now to the mini-mod and people that are really stoked about it: yes, it's nice to see what you can do with SC2, and the mod looks ok and everything, but who will really play this more than 5 minutes? fl0w has a special vibe that makes it work, this is just a boring version of pacman

I love the custom maps, they are mucho fun. But the problem is NONE of it (in the Beta at least) is tracked and feels like I'm back in the late 90's. You spend 2 hours on a tower defense map, finally pass it against all odds and you have nothing to show for it. Maybe a leader board, a custom game achievement area with a Custom game completion status section would help.

it really doesn't seem logical or possible for blizzard to make achievements for custom games they didn't even create. And even if it was, imagine how many custom games are made / played, do you really expect them to monitor all of that rubble, especially with battle.net being free? Seems a bit unfair of a request if you ask me considering the unprecedented quality of a game Starcraft 2 is proving to be

if you need some silly reward to play a game, you're playing for the wrong reasons.

Oh god internet, forget what I said about achievements. I'm saying just something, either a tab showing what custom games you've completed in full or leader board capabilities. Something like Little Big Planet, because the creator is so in depth and for a lot of people is the focal point of the game.
Not saying it's the only reason I want to play them, just saying it would be nice. Same with the traditional style of play, it just helps to have something worth shooting for.
But I do apologize for offending your game ethics.

i admire the dedication involved in creating this, but you could just throw $8 bucks to thatgamecompany and get the original. But hey, why do they deserve compensation, other than investing the time and money to create the original game?
