He makes a point, I do want physical content.
But if I could get all my games digitally for a fair price, I would.
Most people I know haven't bought a retail game since they installed Steam.

When it comes to consoles, I think physical media is the best way to go, and also the most secure way, but in PC gaming, it's reversed. I think Steam is the best solution, since you can easily carry games from one computer to another, and don't have to deal with the sort of DRM found in discs (leaving the disc in the tray, etc.).

For consoles, physical media is the way to go, but when it comes to PC, I think that digital distribution is the way to go.

@Talos Izanagi I don't understand why people are having such a hard time with digitally downloaded content? If they allow you to make backups of the content on memory cards and additional hard drives than you should feel that you own the media.

Personally, I will only ever play through a game once. I'll probably play open world games for a couple months. The only games I play consistently are computer games and that is because of modders. So DD would be a great future option for me.

On the other hand I can see where people who want to play the game again, the same people who still play their PS1 or SNES, will want to have a physical copy of the game. However, compromises can be met and if they allow you to backup the copy of your game that gives you a hardcopy that will never disappear even if the service does.

Online verification, no ability to rent or buy or sell used games, having all your games tied to an account on some server instead of in your home, limited backup options outside of the PC...

Digital distribution is scary. We have yet to see what will happen to all our PSN and XBLA games when the next generation of consoles has been around for a few years. Xbox 1 DD purchases are already gone, forever. Wiiware titles will go away too...

@Kyammi (sorry if this comment ends up in the wrong place).

You most likely won't be able to play your current XBLA or PSN games on the next consoles. & if they do add the feature it will be limited to the first iteration of that console or a shoddy software emulator.

I think the GameStop CEO is just trying to justify his company's business model by making these comments, regardless by how true they may be.

Downloads are nice because you can switch on-the-fly without having to change disc, and this is entertainment and I think the laziness argument is ignoring the value of the experience.

How about System Verification and Online verification? Instead of having the verify that you're who you say you are every time by logging into a webservice, they could easily do something like what sony has done and allow you to tie a game to a system. Though personally, this is what I meant about DRM being a con. It is really not hard to back-up a game on a USB drive or DVD.

Digital distribution is scary. We have yet to see what will happen to all our PSN and XBLA games when the next generation of consoles has been around for a few years. Xbox 1 DD purchases are already gone, forever. Wiiware titles will go away too...

I also think there is a black market for DD content. I love it there.

The second part is a null/void for me. I don't have any XBLA games. I don't own Wiiware titles. Even though I own all three systems I'd rather purchase full downloaded games from places like Steam (* Other places); PSN for my PSP-Go. The thing about the games disappearing is fine with me. I only play a game once and then I'm done with it. [some exceptions apply] So if a game disappears I'm not really going to feel that bad about it. Though this paragraph in the post in my opinion, and my opinion rarely ever lines up with the general populations opinion.

DD doesn't bother me as much as others do, and in all honesty I'd buy a PSPGo if the price was more appealing(though I'd probably buy one now anyway). But unlike others, I rarely sell my games, not because I like to have them for the sake of a "collection" but I sometimes find myself playing them again. When it comes to the debate of DD, resale isn't much my gripe nor the physical vs digital possession, it's the price, and especially with the PSPGo, games can cost more than there physical counterparts.

To the point, gamers aren't reluctant to buy via DD because of physicality(word?) but pricing, at least I think so.

The only way for Gamestop to accommodate to the digital future is by bringing out kiosks that allow users to integrate with all three digital fronts. Meaning that if you trade in a few games then enter your edge card and buy whatever digital content you want.

Discs are noisy, hard drives are noiseless. Discs have longer loading times than hard drives. You don't have to spend gas to go to the store with digital download and you don't even have to support Gamestop, the relentless retailer from ****. Get my point?

I think they are working towards the point that you could bring in your games, trade them in and use it towards digital content that would be delivered directly to your console.
But the future is not now. People still want actual stuff for their actual dollars.

I'm a physical content consumer...If I could, I would buy several of my downloadable games in physical form. My problem with digital content is simple...In buying downloadable content, you are paying for something that has no real physical representation. This means that in the case of a corporation going bankrupt or having serious technical issues, your ownership of said content may come into question. Sure, you may be saving space by using a service...But should that service abruptly end and you would want to play that game again some day or share it with someone...I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to send you a physical copy as they go out of business. Aside from liking the feel of product in my hands, given that I am responsible with it...I know that I own what I purchased. If 30+ years down the line I decide to play that game again, I can be sure that I will be able to. Not to mention that physical content is far easier to share with my friends!

It's not so much physical content, it's more along the lines of what comes with it. You download something, it's stuck on your system, you can't loan it out or bring it to a buddies house.
You're limited as to what you can do with what you 'bought' because of some dumb ass DRM.

@WiredKnight I said for months that if Sony wanted to get rid of UMDs so bad they should just put their games in boxes on protected Memorysticks and it'd be just like cartridges, heck Nintendo can put just as much content on DS carts so I couldnt really understand the point in UMD tech to begin with. Heck it would even make the games cheaper.

@PN04 Flash still costs exponentially more than UMD.

For example, at launch, DS cards cost 288 times more per megabyte than UMD.

And now, a 50 GB bluray costs less to manufacture than 4 GB of flash

UMD was invented for that reason, it's a lot cheaper to press holes into a sheet of plastic than it is to do the circuitry of flash

Flash is no different than cartridge. And we switched away from that for a reason. They arent going back

While I applaud the "other side of the coin" coverage of the Digital vs. Physical debate, I don't really give two shits what company CEOs think about the form the product they sell takes. I'd rather they just STFU AJPG (and just play games) because they have vested interests (Gamestop CEO claiming disc stay, Newgrounds-ish CEO claiming digital is right around the corner).

I get my content via both avenues. Hell, I've played games off 5 1/4 inch floppies.

I like physical discs, i also like the advantages of steam, the best games for me i can buy in the shops, the register/link into steam (as a non steam game) so i get the best of both worlds!

THe idea that digital will completely overtake physical is still quite a way off, for PC its happening because shops don't sell PC games (its one of those self fullfilling propacys, hmv and other non dedidcated game stores decided that pc games are being bought online so they stop selling them... so you have to buy online). For most other places while it is growing physical will be aroudn for a while because it lets granny watkins buy a game for her grandkids, or lets parents just wonder around a store and here "daddy daddy i want that one".

I agree bro.

Retail disc:
5 computer activation limit.
Have to enter serial Key.
Need to patch manually.
Will not install once activation servers are down.

Steam:
You download it and then play it.
If something happens, you just download it again or install it from a backup DVD.

Oh wait.

CONSOLE gamers still want physical content. PC gamers, though, have ALWAYS been ahead of the curve when it comes to just about everything(save files, LAN games, online play, etc), so the move toward a Steam-like future on consoles is pretty inescapable.

Or maybe you should sell it to a store that actually gives you good money for it, or on eBay, where you can likely make back half the game's retail price, or more.

I like my physical game media just fine. In fact, I almost always prefer it to digital media, and am sometimes willing to pay a small premium for it.

However, that hardly means that I support the lumbering, monstrous behemoth that GameStop represents. I refuse to contribute to their mass exploitation of gamers via the extremely poor credit given for used games, and the high prices used games are subsequently sold for. If it is at all possible, I avoid purchasing things from GameStop, and I will continue to do so.

You just have to know how to play the GS game. I make money off titles I sell back, at least the used ones. I buy used off eBay, big sales at GS, gamefly sales, etc. then sell those with the edge card and deals they offer usually resulting in +$$. I use that cash to pay for my new titles. Plus I get $25 gift cards every 3 months from e-rewards. I haven't actually purchased a new game in 2-3 years and I snag most releases. Heck, I have 3 titles paid off right now and about 2-3 reserves with $5-10 on them.

The truth is that we dont want physical content, what purpose does it serve in any way ?? other then we can scratch it and break it ? or the dog bite it ? id personaly let my dog chew on my hardrive, digital formats are 10 fold better then anything physical, similar to netflix and many other digital providers, it saves gas in the process as well, but lets use netflix as my example and websites like http://www.watchhavenonline.com This link is just example of why digital is better in its self, 3 clicks of a mouse and i can watch a show i like it takes you longer to get your content and put it in the dvd player.

and as a side note to one of my favorite sites, im going to include the link if you like the show haven by syfy as well http://www.watchhavenonline.com
