Report: $400 Halo Reach Xbox 360 bundle on the way [update: confirmed!]

Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft is on the verge of announcing a Halo: Reach Xbox 360 hardware bundle. The $399.99 package will contain a silver version of the new Xbox 360 S (equipped with a 250GB hard drive), a copy of the game (of course!) and two wireless controllers. The bundle was detailed by -- who else? -- the Ars Mole and would likely be released alongside the various retail editions of the game on September 14.

Further evidence of the Reach-branded hardware comes by way of Joystiq reader "killer rin," who sent us a link to this Xbox.com page (now removed), which had advertised a Reach-themed controller (captured above) for $60. The controller appears to reflect the design suggested in Ars' report.

you knows what hilarious? Sources have indicated that Microsoft has already been developing the 'next' generation of video games (performance, visuals, etc)...and their new system is going to be out soon (1-3 years).

And people continue to purchase systems.

People are doing the Nintendo-Gamecube thing again. Buying N64s, then reading about the Gamecube in the newpaper the next morning.

But that's 1-3 years of awesome gaming to play. I've been without a 360 for over a year and I just got one in time for the new S model. I don't regret it one bit.

@Code Supreme commenter EEchutah: It's not like everyone will run right out and buy the next gen systems day one, either. It's gonna take a lot for me to move up. I've still got quite a back log of games still to try out for the 360 that will last me at least a year or two once this gen is done.

You know what's hilarious "sources" have "indicated" that Microsoft openly plans on the 360 having a 10 year life cycle (http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6211650/xbox-360-to-have-10-year-life-span-report)& that the Kinect (natal) launch is being thought of internally as though it's a new system launch (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/kim-microsoft-treating-natal-launch-like-a-new-console/). Which, when you also factor in the newly redesigned console, adds credit to the systems reported life cycle.

And people continue to purchase systems.

Of course they're working on a new system. So is every other major electronics manufacturer's out there.
It's call research and developement and is needed to be anywhere close to the game of competition for whenever the company and/or the consumer's are ready for new products.

Mine's been doing that for about a year now... I've almost gotten used to it, and of course next week I'll be looking for the SC2 Collectors Edition. So there goes any hopes of a balance between me and my wallet...

The green Halo 3 one looked pretty cool, but I'll have t o wait until I see this to reserve judgment.

@Shadsy I own the green halo console and it is the best looking console out there. This silver one may be even better but i will wait until they announce it and show more pictures.

I love halo as much as the next fanboy, but I'm holding out for the Gears of War 3 limited 360... You know it's going to happen

And Microsoft is continuing the tradition of releasing ugly ass HALO themed controllers.

@Joeybeast I think the ODST one is quite nice, much better than the plain green one that came with the Halo 3 themed 360.

But those painted 360 controllers? Yeah, they were ass.

@Mazrael No way at all there'll be a DA2 special xbox. A faceplate maybe (does the S even support swapable faceplates?) but it's nowhere near big enough to get it's own console. Did Gears 2 even get one?

@TheDarkWayne Those faceplates kinda flopped, or at least in the UK.. It's slim picking here, and if you find a decent one it's for horizontal-do-ers..
Gears 2 got a bundle and one of those vinyl skins and faceplate.. so not really a special edition..

At least it won't be puke colored like the Halo 3 bundle.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I want my Xbox to break all ready. It's been 3 years and still no RROD or anything. I need that bundle.

God damn mother bitch. I bought an S in late June, even though I had a feeling there would be a Reach bundle. I needed to get a new box eventually, but I was going to wait to hear what MS was going to do with Reach. Should have gone with my gut feeling and waited.

@Crods Since this is coming out in September, and Kinect is out in November, I'm gonna say that's unpossible. But maybe some store will have a Black Friday "bundle" of this and Kinect for $500.

I wonder how long it will be before they start making custom skinned Kinects to go along with these bundles. That would be pretty sweet.

If those markings on the controller were actual grooves instead of just inked on decals, I would be all over this. Sadly that is not the case.

You're going a bit overboard with the SKUs, Microsoft. You'll have four of them just for the new Xbox 360 in addition to whatever is still left over from the old systems.
