So is it comparable to the old Star Lancer game? Because I loved that game on Dreamcast.

@toastix Starlancer is my favorite space combat game of all time. It's not the best one, but it's my favorite. If you have fond memories of the Dreamcast version, do yourself a favor and dig up a PC and play with a Logitech flight stick (Logitech work best by far on that particular game) -- it takes the experience to an entirely new level.

Read your post. Your sentence is a fragment and an incomplete thought.

"so I wonder this plays."

What the hell does that mean? What the hell are you trying to say?

DOWNVOTED!

Move along.

It's a LOT like Freelancer. If you liked Freelancer you'll probably like this, I'm kind of wondering why they didn't mention it in the article. Personally it was tough for me to really get into DSO because I don't like that you're stuck with the same ship the whole game, but that's just me.

It actually looks like a Freelancer clone, same exact controls and everything. Its a shame there was no Freelancer 2, Freelancer was the best space combat game ever, way more fun than Freespace.

Particularly since - while solid - it's pretty second-rate compared to the space sims of yore. Really repetitive.

I'll still play the original Elite (via the free and awesome windows/ macintosh/ linux port Oolite http://www.oolite.org/ ) and I think it's still way better than every clone since then (then = 1985). Especially better than DSO!

Wow, this game totally flew under the rader (no one liked that pun?). In all seriousness, I remember playing the demo for this game back in 2006, and I remember it as being a lot of fun. It's too bad they didn't put more work and love into port, but that being said, the graphics of space sims like this tend to age pretty well. In any case, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the review Justin.

I considered getting this years ago but it was on PC so I passed, maybe I'll pick it up for 360 when the price comes down to $30 or less.

You can get it wicked cheap on Steam as well, though it's got some issues running at modern resolutions.

Freelancer... man. They need to make a new one of those.

I loved it back on the PC as well as Freelancer and Starlancer. I wish Wing Commander would come back. This port holds up very well and it has been long enough that I want to play it again and at $50 it is a no-brainer purchase. I would love to see space sims come back.

Pretty sure you can get this through Steam or GoG for next to nothing to play on the PC. $5-$10, IIRC. I remember thinking that this would be worth checking out if my PC were more powerful. At the time of release, I was running a way-underpowered machine for the year. Right now, I'm still doing the same thing, but it should be able to handle circa 2006 games. :)

May give this a look on the PC now since I don't have a 360 on which to play this. I appreciate the description at the beginning of the review, though. The game itself reminders of Privateer to some extent. Missions, upgrade ship, etc. Haven't played Freelancer so can't comment. I think that was another of the "if only my PC could handle it" games for me.

OMG, they released a 4 year old port of a PC game at a $50 price point! I was seriously going to go get this, assuming it would be a budget $30 or so title.

Also, it's $10 on GoG on the PC, and I'm pretty sure it's regularly in some of their weekend sales (almost got it discounted a few months ago).

I would just get it on the PC, but I so rarely play anything on it anymore I've stopped buying games. Up to a backlog of at least 20 games on Steam alone because of its evil sales.

Freelancer, the space combat in it was amazing. Keyboard and mouse sounds completely stupid for that, but they made it work very very well.

Exactly. After playing Freelancer, I looked for mouse control in all future space combat sims. It controlled perfectly for me.

Star Wras Galaxies uses the mouse/keyboard combo for the space portion of the game. Its actaully a pretty decent space fighter sim too.

I have an old copy of Dark Star One for PC, it was good except for the cringe-inducing voice acting. Wish they had at least included some new content considering they want $50 for an old game.

I'd already decided before the reviews - it's the only space sim out for the 360 so I had to get it.
