If your cash flow has been irreparably dammed by some unknown stoppage, yet you're looking for a meaty action-RPG to chew on this weekend, EA's offering a deal which seems right up your alley. For this weekend only, you can grab the original Mass Effect on PC for five American dollars.
Should you find the plight of Commander Shepard to be particularly gripping, you can also invest in the PC version of the game's sequel for the discounted price of $24. We're Joystiq.com, and this is our favorite weekend discount on the Citadel.

The fact that Mass Effect is what passes for one of the greatest games of this generation makes me sad - not because Mass Effect is awful (it isn't), but because it's nothing compared to the amazing PC RPGs of the 90s. I guess clunky gameplay, plot holes and a lack of choice and consequence are all great so long as you get to make big explosions.

Steam had a Mass Effect sale way back in June where they sold Mass Effect for $5 too I think. I have Mass Effect on Steam and I have no DRM issues. This is why I buy all my games from Steam compared to other digital stores. Steam DRM > Other DRM

@ALBGunner04 If this sale was on Steam for $5, I probably would have bought it--if for no other reasons than #1) hey, $5, and #2) I'm already set up with Steam. However, I've read the EA Classics version doesn't use SecuRom? I'm going to look into that.

SecuROM plus EA Download Manager, which I believe is running in some form (possibly a service?) when you play the game. For DLC I'm not sure - I have a retail copy of Mass Effect, and the only way to get Pinnacle Station (totally not worth the $5) is to use EA Download Manager.

In terms of replay value this game has it in spades. Pick your own adventure on steroids to a certain extent.
