Microsoft has posted financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter and year, which ended June 30. The Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD), of which the Xbox 360 and PC gaming business are a part of, posted revenues of $1.6 billion for the quarter, up from $1.25 billion during the same period last year. Revenue exclusive to the Xbox and PC gaming business was up to $228 million, a 30 percent increase.
EDD also posted an operating loss of $172 million, which grew for the $141 million recorded during the same quarter last year. Factors contributing to the loss included increased marketing costs, increased third-party sales on Xbox Live Marketplace and the discontinuation of the KIN phone.
Microsoft's full fiscal year 2010 report paints a brighter picture, with the EDD posting an operating income of $679 million, up from $108 million in fiscal 2009, an increase of 528 percent. The increased income was due primarily to reduced operating expenses. Revenue costs also decreased $528 million, thanks largely to lower Xbox 360 production costs. Fiscal 2010 revenues were essentially flat at just over $8 billion.
Additionally, Microsoft moved 1.5 million Xbox 360 consoles during the quarter, compared to 1.2 million during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. In all, 10.3 million consoles were sold in fiscal 2010, down from 11.2 million the previous year. Meanwhile, Xbox Live now has 25 million members, and our cohorts at Engadget report that Xbox Live Marketplace revenue has exceeded Xbox Live subscription revenue for the first time.

Uhhhh...this isn't in anyway "bad" news. Why would they reduce the cost of XBL when it's proving to be a success at it's current price year over year?

I get your point, but when did the the people of the country turn into such door mats for the rich. Instead of "fight the power" its become "yes sir, may I have another".

We're talking about videogames and entertainment here. It's a want not a need so I honestly don't see what the big deal is.

I think the XBLM revenue increase can directly be connected with all of the deals and price cuts that have been happening this past year. Almost everything I've bought has been on sale. Except for Peggle. Sweet, sweet peggle.
The other reason is the increase in quality of arcade games and DLC. I remember my jaw dropping when I realized I would have to pay extra cash for levels of Katamari. But I scooped the Passing up immediately.

@Petebot330 I completely agree. The only thing I would normally buy from the Marketplace over the last few years is Rock Band songs, but with all the deals of the week, I picked up so many more arcade games than I normally would. I doubt that they'll stop the DOTW anytime soon with these numbers, and that's awesome for us.

some of the reason for the the XBL jump over subscription is because there has been a lot of deals lately for renewing Live like the "Renew for $1" or special deals on 3 months too.

I actually didn't buy anything on Xbox Live Marketplace from the time I bought my Xbox 360 (2005) until a couple months ago, but the quality of DLC and Arcade games has gotten such that I've bought a few games just in the past couple of months, like BF1943, Limbo, Braid, and DLC for Forza 3.

I bought an eye patch and a giant Q-tip. Next thing I know I have 6 or 7 XBLA games bought this year.

You can but you have to wait a week or something like that. "
That's not correct. You only have to wait a week is when demos are released.
