@Rabite

They are still there, just in different names. You didn't seem too broken up when FFXIII named them "Ravager" and "Medic" rather than Black Mage and White Mage.

FFXIV is going for its own style. It isn't just trying to be FFXI-2. If you really look into it, the system sounds amazing even if you're skeptical about MMOs.

@Bewoulf1223 It's hard to be upset about something when you've never played it. I didn't even know they renamed it in FFXIII. I tried FFXI and lost interest due to all the people. I would have loved the game if they would have had an offline mode ala PSO, but that's not the design they went for so I just didn't play it. The job system and the battle system would have been fun if I wouldn't have had all the lag and the thousands of people "talking".

@Anderfreak Wow that was a deep showing of mental and emotional growth. Thank you for sharing that with us. I bow before your obvious superior intellect and eloquence.

@Bewoulf1223 I was quite annoyed at FFXIII's choice of class names, and FFIV's names are just leaving me that much more confused.

FFIV? The classes in that game are like Paladin, DRagoon, White mage... nothing really unusual.

Also, Japan got the awesome class names for FFXIII.

Some of you have written this game off already. That's okay. But let me just address some of the concerns already listed for those who might still be on the fence:

The "disciples of the hand" and "disciples of magic" are basic job--if you read about them all they're all basically the same as the classic FF jobs.

@Frostbane: Those are all the crafting classes the game will ever have, which is why there are more at this time. Every character can be ANY OR ALL of these classes, actively switching between them on the fly. As for the "lack" of fighting classes, just like in FFs past, (particularly XI), higher-level, likely more specialized classes, will be released after the game is out. This is consistent with all other MMOs and previous FFs.

I'm really encouraging people to try XIV. I understand XI had serious deficiencies, but I played it for a long time and can attest to how much Square Enix learned in the process. XI isn't the sickeningly boring, party-necessary grindfest you remember. It's now a newbie and solo-friendly, very solid MMO. The reason I am saying this is because I know the dev team has carried the lessons they learned from XI over. XIV may be "XI-2", but that comes with the growth and knowledge which comes with time.

If you don't want to play XIV, that's okay. But honestly? I think you'll be missing out.

@FruitFcker You know, I'd like to try out this game but there's one problem - the new $1,100 laptop I'm thinking of purchasing might not even run it. I think for a game to have such demanding requirements may hurt its mass appeal. I remember when I was 11 and got Final Fantasy XI right when it came out. Our computer couldn't run it, but we had our dad go out and buy a $100 video card at Best Buy (which means the price is inflated by about twice the amount), and we played it just fine. I'm not too sure if that's possible for FFXIV.

I wouldn't even say FFXI had "serious deficiencies". It just took too damn long to do anything. Amazing game if you had the time.

@Spiritbeast Actually, I'd suspect the right $100 video card would do the trick - they got some pretty nice choices in that price range now. This is assuming your processor, RAM, etc is up to snuff, but it probably will be at that price range.

Here's the real question:

Have you PLAYED it?

Because this alpha/beta tester is telling you that you're wrong. It is FF11 all over again.

@FruitFcker Wait, FFXI is newbie and solo-friendly now? I just bought the FFXI Ultimate Collection for PC last week on a whim, and the game seems extremely inaccessible and grind-festy, especially since the low level areas and towns are almost devoid of other players who want to group.

Mind showing me what I'm not getting? :3

@ThePenIsMightier

If you're in the alpha/beta, okay, you know more than I do about the game. However, I've been following all media for the game since alpha, including the Eorzapedia and FFXIV Lounge boards, and I've noticed a lot of differences that are significant, at least to me.

--The Battle system seems faster, similar to the FFXIII system of a constantly-filling gauge, with some abilities taking more or less of said gauge to execute. This change was made in Beta.

--Actively changing classes on the fly through gear swap instead of returning to Mog House

--'Character Levels' and job levels, instead of just job levels, including the ability to appropriate Points to all of your stats upon leveling up; this means that two characters with the same race and job will still be unique to one another.

--Much deeper character customization, including gear color customization and having your unique character in cutscenes actually doing things instead of standing there like a robot.

--Guildleves for soloing, small parties and large parties, for different playstyles

--HP recovery upon movement (a la FF12) instead of resting, which means roaming parties instead of camps

The aesthetics are similar, albeit with updates graphics, but the gameplay seems to have undergone significant changes, different facets of which I have just listed. As an FFXI enthusiast, I can say that these are all welcome changes.

That said, I know FFXIV isn't perfect and isn't for everyone; I'm not saying it is. I just think that people should try it before they write it off. I'm excited to try it, but until I play it, I can't say whether or not I'll like it. I can only say I like what I see so far.

Ha ha, let me clarify:

FFXI is much more accessible for newbies and those who like soloing than it was when it came out. It used to be absolutely punishing, keeping decent abilities locked until very high levels, monsters whose aggro never dissipated, waiting hours for a party, etc.

Now you can solo all the way to level cap, if you like, and they've changed many abilities so that you can have them at lower levels and use them with subjobs. FFXI is still, likely, one of the most difficult MMOs out there; no one gets to cap in a few weeks, a la WoW, quests are not simple run-and-guns, and seeing the whole game is next to impossible--it's just so big. I was speaking comparatively, with the FFXI of yesteryear compared to the way it is now. The game won't hold your hand, but if you stick with it, you might find a deeper, more challenging and ultimately more satisfying MMO than most others out there.

@Strider TomTom The Pugilist seem to be similar to the rogue/thief classes. But you have to remember your abilitys comes from what weapon you have equipped so the thief class would really be, having a (dagger) equipped. And i've seen on the ability list for the Pugilist that it has the (steal) ability so only reason i mention the Pugilist, but in all honest it will depend upon your (weapon you have equipped)

No specific summoner class. However that could easily fall under Thaumaturge with blood summonings and things like that, and maybe even under the Conjurer with elemental summons. It's hard to tell, but yeah, unless the two magic classes have a metric asston of spells each then it will be pretty disappointing.

ive really been looking forward to this game and these beginning classes sound awesome! also, im sure SE is going to add more classes down the line. That's one of the few things they're going to keep similar to FFXI. FFXI had SO many classes and with its subjob system it diversified those classes even more. This game seem to be taking that up a notch with this new system in place of being able to mix and match your skills. Can't wait!

Well, from what I've played in the alpha and beta (Which hasn't been much. They are absolutely horrible at setting times to play and have cancelled almost all of their beta times already), the game is pretty fun. I've tried out the pugilist and lancer and the combat system is pretty interesting and different compared to most MMOs. It's sort of like an ATB system.

I've also tried out the mining class. Their crafting classes all consist of mini games as far as I can see. The mini games, however, are a bit lacking and would get old really fast, so I hope they fix those up sometime...

The graphics are pretty intensive for an MMO, but my 7 year old computer had absolutely no problem running it, and that's using a graphics card I bought for 100 dollars about 3 years ago. So if you're buying an $1,100 laptop and it can't run this game, you are getting ripped off.

Some of you may have laughed at that comment about there being no "jump" button, but it's still true. The exploration aspect is a bit lacking. There are caves all around, but unless you have a quest that takes place in that cave, it will always be completely empty. There's almost a sort of linearity to the game too, which is very bad for MMOs. You aren't able to climb up a 2 foot ledge. You need to go around. You also can't fall off a 2 foot ledge. So if you like the appeal of being able to explore anything you want whenever you want, this will sadly not be for you.

The quests seem a bit lacking as well. You receive guildleves from an unmarked npc that you have to look for and then go to the area where that guildleve takes place. And every single guildleve was "go kill 3 rats" or something similar. And like I said, everything is laid out for you. When you get a guildleve, it marks the area and the specific monster that you are allowed to fight, and nothing else. I'm sure there will also be storyline quests when the full game is released, and the cutscenes are pretty amazing for an MMO as well, but my big issue is the major linearity to it all.

Overall, it's a very interesting take on the MMO genre and worth a try just to see if you like it. But don't go into it expecting to play it like every other MMO, because you'll be very disappointed.

There is no way that is the entire list...much too generalized...I bet any amount of money that they will start adding in specialized classes under these in the near future.

As long as they kept the combat/party-system from being too tedious and did away with that exp loss BS...this could be a winner.
