Play it! Dragon Age was one of my favorite games of 2009. There are also a bunch of cool mods like respec potions and character redesigns.

Same here, and I love Bioware RPGs, and morally ambigious RPGs in general.

DA had the most boring, predictable and utterly mundane story that I've ever heard praised.

The darkspawn (orcs) are attacking. You must defeat them!

Congraturation! You have defeated the darkspawn! But don't worry, they will probably be back in time for a sequel.

That is the ENTIRETY of Dragon Age's story. No plot twists, no unexpected intrigue, no choices of any consequence.

Let's hope Bioware makes a story worth telling for the sequel, as well as gameplay slightly more exciting than playing Dungeons and Dragons....by yourself.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze I played it on PS3 and was quite disappointed as well. I guess the better interface, graphics, and mods on the PC version really make a difference, since DA:O has all these rabid fans.

I love RPGs and the fantasy genre, but DA:O was plagued with some really clumsy animation that made cutscenes awkward and uncinematic, overpriced DLC that made you pay for essential features like item storage, and lots of bugs, just to name a few of it's shortcomings.

I really want to like Dragon Age, and it had plenty of good things to offer, but it just felt so unpolished compared to Bioware's other recent work imo.

I'm looking forward to how they change things in DA2.

No worries, I didn't like it either. Other than the mage tower area, most of the game felt like a treadmill to me. The characters were dull, the dialogue was pretty terrible, and I felt no compulsion to keep playing after about 4 hours. I'll look at the DA2, but only as long as it takes me to read the back cover.

well see, the storage was free for people who bought the game new. it was the incentive for Dragon Age as was the Cerberus Network card for Mass Effect 2. It's Bioware's way of saying "thanks for buying our game and supporting us" it wasn't essential for the game but it was totally great to have.

(its a lot better than taking away a prime feature then charging you for it..... EA)

@Coml That's not true. Warden's Keep and the party chest was only included in the Digital Deluxe version of the game.

I bought Dragon Age: Origins new for PS3 and it gave me Shale "for free," but Bioware demanded I pay an extra $7 on top of the original $60 just to have a place for my items. Which would be considered a normal, not "premium DLC" feature (Bioware's own words) in most RPGs.

I just have this sneaking suspicion EA will tell them the PC combat returning will take too long and they'll nix it. Maybe I'm always looking for ill omens.

I just felt like the first Dragon Age was the first game in a long time that was a major multi-plat release that felt like, just this one time, they were like 'here pc guys, we haven't shown you love in a while so we made this special for you'

@Cleric I could swear that in a previous article I read, maybe GI, they said the combat changes were to make the console versions more fluid, while the PC combat would remain largely the same. Though maybe that is just what I want to remember it said.

I'm generally concerned that Dragon Age 2 will be lacking in tactical depth. I know that "visceral combat" is what gets the kids going these days, as does excess blood and gore, but that's not why I play a role-playing game and it shouldn't be what gets people to either. I'm not doubting that Dragon Age 2 will likely be a good game, but BioWare doesn't seem intent on making RPGs anymore, and that upsets me, especially considering Origins seemed to at least hearken back to the better days of late 90s PC RPGs.

Funny, for a game that claimed to be a "mature RPG", Dragon Age seemed pretty damn immature. Every female character in the game, whether demon or treething or human, had the largest breasts they could hope to reasonably put on. And of course the gore surrounding the marketing effort and in every kill.

If that's "mature", then apparently "mature RPGs" are the kind aimed at 12 year olds.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with dark fantasy or some violent action, but Dragon Age tried to rely on it way too much.

Ditto, Verrier

Dragon Age had a very cheesy boot leg Lord of the Ring's plot. Couple that with the pointless romance sub-plots, and the fact that 50% of the major mods for Dragon Age on PC are porn/nude mods, it's easy to see which demographic plays Dragon Age the most. If anything, I'd rather see unnecessary gore and violence than a cheesy "romance" scenes. Crap like that makes me facepalm and distracts people from the real game which when Bioware is involved, is often good.

@Verrier Now I don't disagree with you on most of your point. However I have to say that The red head bard, leliana, had a pretty average chest size. She was one of the more realistic female npcs I think bioware has made. Well other then the fact she was a lesbian as well. but still.

It was so nice to finally have a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate (if not an outright equal)... and so sad to see it go the way of the dodo not a year later.

I'm sure the game will be enjoyable. But now that RPG niche is left empty once again. Will we have to wait another 10 years?

I like Dragon Age, but I honestly wish they'd have either continued Baldur's Gate or an Dragon-Age-like reboot of the series (meaning 3rd-person vs. top-down).

I don't think I'm gonna get the sequel...maybe after it goes down in price...I really don't like the way the sequel sounds the more I hear about it...

True, they could have done a few things to combat to streamline it more ...like the AI responding to their tactics a bit better and just one or two tweaks to general AI (modular vs. waterfall for instance) to keep the "stop and go" micro-management to a minimum.

But the complete overhaul that this is doing... :/

Agreed. I mean, not that I wouldn't look forward to them making the combat a bit more streamlined; however I have to say the more I hear the more turned off I am a bout getting by this sequel. It just sounds like to me that they are just throwing out of window everything that made the first one special. I guess only time (and further development) will tell, if it'll remain this path. But so far I'm not feeling impressed...

Maybe it's just me, but I would have prefered if they had announced something with that rumored Jade Empire sequel. I've played through Dragon Age: Origins, and I thought it was a predictable, repetitive snore-fest.

Maybe I should head back to the original Neverwinder Nights 1, as I find that gem to be much more enjoyable than Dragon Age: Origins.

Agreed. I don't know how anyone could argue that DAO wasn't predictable or repetitive. The game consisted of 30-40 hours of running down color-palette shifted corridors filled with doors that led to small rooms full of darkspawn.

Just run past the doors in the endless hallways and the game is over in half the time!

This article really brought down my expectations. I loved DA:O, on the 360 even. It was challenging, had an awesome, unique combat system, and was hard as hell for me.

But the way the article made it sound is that it's trying to merge Dragon Age with a generic slasher game.

The info about the gameplay left me with more questions that answers, really. Other that knowing that they ditched the move queue which I think will actually make micromanagement harder, is everything else virtually the same or not?

If I remember right, the GI article about the game said that Dragon Age 2 DOESN'T take place in Fereldon, but in a different part of the world. However, they are working on ensuring that what we did in DA1 comes back in DA2 because this is happening around that similar period.

Mike as the former editor of wow.com i thought you might have something more insightful to say about the combat, but it appears you've seen nothing of substance. Can we get some real details on what the gameplay is going to be other than the fact that you can pause to issue commands? Maybe bioware is being very tight lipped, but don't dress up their PR tell us it like it is.

Sounds really interesting. A game played from the perspective of exaggerated memories or second-hand information, maybe even playing the same scenario a couple of times with different outcomes -- 'That's not how it really happened! It was like this..' -- that could be really cool.

I loved the first Dragon Age almost exactly the way it was because it felt like a classic RPG. The only problems I had with it were the repetitive armor designs and somewhat-easier-than-other-bosses final boss.

I'm sad to see Dragon Age become a lot more like Mass Effect, as much as I loved that franchise too... I just believe they should stay separated :(

@Aussiemon I'm with you 100%. I never liked a BioWare game until Mass Effect, but what shocked me was how Dragon Age was able to show me just why games like Baldur's Gate were so amazing. I've sunk about 150 hours into Dragon Age and its expansion, and it's easily my absolute favorite RPG ever. Of course, I was playing on PC with awesome headphones, so that's about as immersive as games can get. :) I hope Dragon Age 2 doesn't stray too far from what made Dragon Age so great.

I love BioWare. I love Kotor, I love ME1+2, and I love DA:O, but I am very apprehensive about this game. Obviously, I doubt that BioWare is going to totally eff this up, but I still worry that this game will be less of an RPG than the first.

Dude, I never said anything about wanting a cookie-cutter plot. I said I don't want this game to be less of an RPG than the original. I played it on the Xbox 360, and sure, the combat was clunky (the wheel was awkward yet very logical given the input method, but we don't have a full keyboard to map powers to, so...) and the graphics were lacking, and yet i devoted 70+ hours of my life to enjoying as much of the game as I could in one playthrough.

Honestly, I just want BioWare to make RPGs. I understand that it's becoming more and more niche now considering they actually force the gamer to...wait for it...*THINK*, but that doesn't mean that the people who play them don't enjoy it, and I don't quite like the fact that the bulk of the industry is moving towards catering to the least common denominator. Now, I'm not some "hXc g4ming elitist," but I don't see the point in turning a great pure fantasy RPG like DA:O into an action game with crappy graphics ("new visual style" my arse).
