See how the other half lives in Gears of War 3 'Beast Mode' footage

We didn't think there was anything slower in the whole, entire universe than one of Gears of War 3's lumbering, impossibly muscle-bound protagonists. We were wrong -- as evidenced by the two GameTrailers videos posted after the break, that honor goes to the new Beast Mode's "Berserker" character.

But isn't the berserker blind and deaf? Technically you should be playing with no sound or vision:P

@Kleptomaniac Nah. This is a Lambent Berserker. They're bigger and badder than the regular berserkers.

@YimYimYimi And I'm pretty sure he could hear. That was how you got him to run into the doors in GoW 1.

These videos did absolutely nothing for my desire for Beast Mode. They picked what looked to be the worst possible level to showcase the Berserker getting to charge around wrecking shit, and they could have at least put the guy playing in the shoes of a Kantus for the second video.

Anyone ever watch that show? It was actually pretty cool!

No shit that's what he's doing... They show us a video of how the game looks, we get to make an opinion of how it looks.
Early build, pre alpha/beta, whatever that is.. it didn't look fun at all.

Uh, why the hell did they release a video if not for people to form opinions on it?
If your game isn't far along enough to have decent looking screenshots or video, you DON'T RELEASE THEM.
Only idiots would release media that makes their product look bad.
And while I really enjoyed Gears 1 and 2 (the multiplayer of 2 sucked balls though), this did look boring as hell.
But all that really matters is that 4 player campaign co-op is in this time. THAT will be awesome.

Why would they show it now? Hype. It gives fans a taste of what is coming, and it shows off the basic idea of the game mode. Not to mention some fans like seeing how the game is progressing development wise, and what is going on. Almost every game studio does it Valve, Nintendo, etc.

Can't help but feel these guys were playing a lot of Left 4 Dead! ;) Frankly, I think the charger and tank would wreck the berserker. They describe it as female, and well...drunk redneck zombies with anger problems...thats all i'm saying! On a vaguely similar note I'm not too comfortable with watching a helpless crawling Anna beat to death or savaged. Double standards for mutants, I know.

This doesn't really look fun. Gears 1 is still one of my favorite games this generation. I really hope that the fact that they're working on this beast mode means they've already fixed all the issues that came up in Gears 2 multiplayer. Honestly all I care about is if I can play some great rounds in Execution. Everything else is icing on the cake, but if they don't get multiplayer right this time they can count me out on buying the game.

Dedicated servers would solve 90% of the issues online. Personally, I'm not even going to think about buying Gears 3 if they don't have them. For their sake, not giving a game like GoW dedicated servers is like Enzo Ferrari himself building a car, and then crapping on it. I simply don't get why Epic even considered, let alone decided, not implementing dedicated servers would be fine for a game built on the multiplayer. It's really a slap to their own face for ruining their own hard work.

Dedicated servers confirmed is definately a good start, but a lot more than that is needed to fix multiplayer. For one, Gears 1 was a really social game. You got into a good server with some friends and you could choose what maps you wanted to play, what weapons you wanted swapped out, and who is on each team. After the round was over the map rotated and you kept playing with the same people. This is so important to having fun, because once you find a good group of people to play with you don't want to be paired up with random people. Gears 2 matchmaking just kicks you out into the lobby and you have to start searching all over again.
Other things need to be tweaked too, like weapon balance. The power weapons like the mortar almost ruined multiplayer by themselves. Maybe the shotgun was too powerful in Gears 1, but they made it completely useless in 2.
I already have an essay here so I'm just going to stop, but I could go on and on about how messed up multiplayer is in Gears 2. Hopefully 3 will be better.

Yeah you're right there.
I think Epic went into Gears 2 multiplayer thinking "our game has a very strong cover based mechanic to it, we need to reflect that in multiplayer instead of it being about shotgun battles" and while they have a point, it totally ruined it for me.
I really, really enjoyed Gears 1 multiplayer. And even though a lot of kills ended in shotgun battles, almost all the weapons were used during a match. Some just took more skill than others. Even the shotgun battles took some skill once you got good at it.
In my opinion, the only negative thing in Gears 1 was the active downs from sniper.
Gears 2 just didn't just stand up to it's predecessor in multiplayer at all. I really hate it's inconsistency. And, ok, they didn't want so many shotgun battles. But as you say, did they really have to make it so useless? When at close range, you'll want to use -a close range weapon-. Chainsaw, shotgun, grenade tags, beating and what have you. Talking of chainsaw, that repetitive stun thing when you get hit while chainsawing is stupid.
Gears 2 had many, many flaws and I really hope they come to their senses and fix it all in Gears 3. If they do, Gears 3 is all I'll be playing. We'll have to see.

Listen to CaramelZappa, this man knows things.
Also, while dedicated servers would be a good start, saying they would fix 90% of the issues in Gears 2 MP is silly. They would fix host advantage and they would fix getting matched up with people across the world from you, but that's really it.
All the the crazy weird lag stuff wouldn't be any different. You're going to ping the same to most dedicated servers as you do to most peer hosts. The core of the Gears netcode needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, but seeings as they have only one guy on their staff that works on Gears netcode (they have confirmed this on their forums), that's not going to happen.

This looks awesome. It should really add on to the amount of play time to be had with this game. Epic has to really step up with this title. Horde & Single Player are a lock & I think Beast Mode & Multiplayer will be top notch. With social matches & dedicated servers going along side with ranked matches & new game modes, April can't come sooner!!!
