THQ blames Red Dead Redemption for lower UFC 2010 sales
71
Last month, THQ reported some not-so-awesome sales figures for its second annual entry into the UFC Undisputed franchise -- to the tune of an almost 50 percent decline from sales for last year's first stab at game-ifying the sport. In a recent discussion with the print version of MCV (via CVG), Jon Rooke, the company's UK marketing director, provided one possible explanation for the decrease: "That's largely down to Red Dead Redemption," Rooke explained.
Though Undisputed 2010 has managed to ship a sizable 2.6 million units, Rooke stated that the title hasn't "delivered the broader sales yet." He added, "Rockstar have probably taken a fair amount of our market share. They shipped 5m units, taking a lot of consumer dollars." We know exactly what he's talking about: We picked up Red Dead Redemption instead of UFC because we heard the former had really great wrasslin' -- but we were unfortunately greeted with hours of rustlin' instead.

I actually considered UFC 2010 over Red Dead Redemption but chose RDR over UFC 2010 only cause I feel THQ should of released the game in the Fall instead of summer

I didn't buy it because I was waiting to see what EA is going to do with MMA. Maybe other people are waiting too.
Although the first iteration was really fun. It felt like it was cheaply made and not much thought was put into the menus, transitions etc. But then again it's made by THQ.

@Anticrawl Yes one of the great games of the last decade for sure, god forbid his opinion matters or the other DOZEN of critics that gave the game it a perfect or close to perfect score but since YOU said it wasn't... I guess it wasn't.

lol - I give this UFC game 1 more year until its no longer a videogame series. "Eaaah.. We decided to stop at UFC 2011 because it was in our best interest to not mess with the almighty 2012. Afterall it is the end of the world... So we're done making UFC games." (Oh and cuz there is much better games on the market to play)

If they go back to the greatness that was UFC 2009 I could see it still being a francise, don't forget ufc 2009 sold out like hot cakes, so the demand is there!

Wahh, it's all Rockstar's fault. It couldn't be because there simply are only so many failstars who play MMA games.

What a bonehead comment. I bet they where on acid when they had the meeting and thought and said "We should release around the same week as Read Dead Redemption". Yep............

mayhap THQ needs to try harder.

Shoot bandits, steal horse, get drunk and play poker, or grope another male all around a caged ring, hmmm I'm surprised THQ sold ne copies of that male porn

How about the fact that after years of churning out sports games, people want narrative? Is this a surprise to anyone? Hey THQ, how about not make Zelda clones and wrestling games, and instead invest more in IPs like Red Faction? Jeez. Also, wait for it, NOT release a game alongside anything by either Rockstar or Blizzard. Just a thought.

Yet another reason to love RDR.

Here's an idea. Why don't publishers jump into the used game market themselves? Walmart, best buy, & amazon have done it, so what's stopping them? Ship prepaid slips with games so consumers can easily ship right back to publishers, Open up stores like gateway, apple, or Microsoft.
There's a better way to get paid instead of these stupid online passes or preorder gimmicks.
