@Captain Planet Planeteer Power - George Lucas based the whole idea of the Force on an ancient chinese religion called Taoism (or Daoism, it's spelled both ways). If you want to learn more about the Force read the Tao Te Ching.

Actually, the prequel trilogy already made me see the original in a new light. And I mean that in a good way. While both trilogies are full of rather one-dimensional characters, put together with their younger and older selves they obtain so much more depth. Anakin Skywalker, yes, was an emo kid. Darth Vader was a order-at-all-costs bad guy. But together, he's a man that lost his mother, his wife, his best friend, even didn't know about his own children, all due to his mentor's betrayal. Just one example, there are others.

Oh wait... I said something good about about the new trilogy! Downvoting is unavoidable! RUN AWAY!

You know, I think you would be hard pressed to find a fan of Star Wars who disagrees that in *concept* the prequels could've been awesome. Filling out Vader's back story and showing his tormented fall really does sound amazing. In reality, unfortunately, Lucas didn't pull it off. To me all he succeeded in doing was removing the mystique of Vader. Lots of people have had harder lives than Anakin and they didn't become the real life equivalent of a Sith's apprentice. He took a compelling character (Vader) and sucked all the bad ass out of him with a single "Noooooo!"

tl;dr: What Lucas did to Vader is like making a Usual Suspects prequel and revealing that Keyser Soze was actually a plumber and not a word of his reputation is true.

That's a fair viewpoint. However I think there needs to be a distinction between analyzing the original trilogy for what they thought Lucas meant and what he actually meant. Most people, for some reason, fall into the former camp. It's not just Star Wars, happens in all literature (like those who treat Romeo & Juliet as a tragic story instead of a comedic play where the sexy female lead was supposed to be played by a man). I like to fall into the latter camp, and while Vader did indeed have a mystique about him, from how the character was explored in Episodes I-III it was clear that Lucas always intended that mystique to be lifted at some point. And yes, many people have shitty lives without becoming supervillains. But they don't have the Dark Side of the Force corrupting them, which I think was the intention. It's also very difficult to keep badassery when having a movie revolve around the character's life as a small, innocent child.

TL,DR: While Anakin Skywalker did suffer from some one-dimensionalism, when taking off the rose-coloured glasses I think his transition from innocent boy to angst teen to child killer to redeemed old man was on the whole, well told.

I think everything Lucas set out to do with the prequels (essentially the Anakin arc you described in your tl;dr) could have been excellent Lucas had just had done it well. Unfortunately, I just do not think he did it well. Yes, Anakin was corrupted by the Dark Side but, to me, it wasn't believable. Also, minor point, but Lucas himself didn't know Vader was going to be Luke's father until 1978 - after Star Wars was already out.

I'm really happy that you enjoyed the prequels, though - I just wish I could do the same!

"Lots of people have had harder lives than Anakin and they didn't become the real life equivalent of a Sith's apprentice."

Aren't most people who haven't had that hard of a life but became overemotional about it - usually the ones that become the homicidal maniac --and if they last long enough in their crime they mature a bit but still are murderers in instinct but now mixed with their grown feelings?

Yeah, that pretty much fits.

As I respect everyone's feelings on the whole prequel bit... mbarriault made an extremely awesome point. That is exactly how I personally feel. I am a massive Star Wars fan and even though the new movies weren't very GOOD, I extremely enjoyed them for what they were. Once you get pasted the crappy acting of Anakin and the goofiness, I enjoyed it quite a bit and love to watch them still and that just makes me all more excited for TFU2, I loved the 1st game as well... once again, not even close to being perfect, but for what it was, I loved it!

It pretty much comes down to people have way to much anticipation for anything Star Wars related and they ALWAYS get butt hurt. The key I believe is to just enjoy it for what it is / was.

@doc j I really want to redo the prequel trilogy and change the canon when I grow up and become an award-winning filmmaker. This would be really hard, but I think I could pull it off. They'd probably have the same campy style of the original trilogy but also be darker and more in depth. I pray Lucasfilm Ltd. will allow it.

See, the campiness is something I don't understand amongst certain Star Wars fans. At the time, every sci-fi was campy. That didn't go away until at least mid-way TNG in the early 90's. Sci-fi just wasn't taken seriously enough to not have comedic value. But I also figure that Lucas pushed the campy bar as low as possible, not being able to get rid of it altogether. The way I see it, the more modern prequel trilogy lacks as much campy nature (though Phantom Menace still had lots, ironically many complain about that) because that's what Star Wars was intended to be. An alternative viewpoint to take is that the spirit captures the transition of the galaxy: the original trilogy was turning from Dark Side to Light, so was much more lighthearted, while the prequel trilogy involved the fall of the Light Side and the rise of the Dark, and so is much more gloomy. It would be difficult that Phantom Menace and Return of the Jedi are the most campy, as exampled Jar Jar Binks and the Ewoks respectively, as those films are the most Light-sided of the series. On the other hand, Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope are unarguably the darkest, with the deaths of major characters like Padme and Obi-Wan.

I never said it was darker than Empire, just darker than Jedi. But yes, I do think it's darker than Empire too. Sure it had the whole bad-guy-is-your-father-and-he-cut-off-your-hand deal, but Hope not only had Ben Kenobi sacrificing himself for Luke (and before we find out that he can not only speak from beyond the grave, but appear and have a grand ol' chat too) but we also had the senseless destruction of an entire planet. As Professor Farnsworth would say "Oh, the Jedis are going to feel this one."

Reading about this game just makes me giddy with anticipation.

I went bat shit crazy when I seen that limbs can finally be sliced off with the saber. It's about damn time! The new AI has me frothing.

The first game was good. Almost really good, but was plagued by lots of glitches, both consoles. Hopefully with this sequel it'll be better then the first and all the silly glitches from the first will be fixed.

I don't think you can generalize "homicidal maniacs" in such a way as you did, but even so that's moot because I'm really not arguing the "what" of the story, I'm saying the "how" is rather suspect. In fact, I think you've touched on my main complaint in a way. I never found Anakin to be sympathetic in the prequels, and to be invested in his downfall I needed to be somewhat sympathetic with the guy. I just wasn't. Again, if you liked it I am happy for you. I did not like it.

I just want him to use real lightsabers instead of glowing Nerf bats. I want to see limbs cut off and searing scars instead of guys getting knocked back by a "molten hot" sword. It felt too "kid-friendly" and made the combat seem boring.

I was about to point this out myself. I only remember because I just finished playing through the first one and its DLC for the achievements. I can see players and reviewers forgetting about features like this but are the developers really touting this as a new feature or are the people from the preview event just saying it is one?

Anyway the trailers they have released for this so far makes me wish they would make a fully CG Star Wars movie (as long as Lucas has nothing to do with it). I just also wish they would place it sometime outside of the time line of the movies. I have played and seen more than enough from this period of time but I would love to see more stuff set in the Old Republic time period (perhaps a console Action RPG to compliment the MMO) or even other time periods.

@twist & @AramanTSG i was thinking the same thing. it was the easiest way to kill them. i distinctly remember the sound of the jet packs going haywire. didn't the troopers even go "whoa whoa whoaaa" or something? THE FETT's in it!! that's dope!! i'm gonna hate to have to kill my favorite character in the star wars universe. he'll be an unlockable skin for follow up play throughs though.

just hope they make the dlc missions better, change the button press sequences up ALOT, and make it a lil easier to pull down a star destroyer. that took FOREVER!!
