Wow, considering how easy it was to use to begin with..

..it must be REALLY easy now!

Still going to use my 360 for now, though, at least until the PS3 gets the dedicated app and can upscale the video!

@ObiAlKenobi Discs are a hassle. They're not impossible, just a hassle. Kind of like filling things out in triplicate: it's not going to cripple my will to live (depending on the form I'm filling out, I suppose), but I'd prefer to not have to do it.

@ObiAlKenobi There is no problem. I don't mind it one bit.

It's just that the 360 upscales the video, and most of what I'm watching right now isn't HD.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze; I also like the look of the 360 app more than any other Netflix application's skin, especially the default one a lot of devices use. It's a lot more pleasant to navigate, IMO. I don't mind the disc reliance at all though.

@ObiAlKenobi: Its annoying to have to get and switch out discs just to switch from a game to Netflix. It'd be way easier just to quit one and then fire up the other one, all while never even getting up out of your chair. Its the American way is all.

Myth. PS3 will upscale what it needs to.. You are getting automatic upscaling on PS3 too.

Please don't link to some 2006 link saying the PS3 has no hardware scaler, as that has long since been debunked too..

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Maybe it is your TV. I use a projection unit that clearly declares when it changes resolution, and Netflix always from the Netflix app (on disc) to the new resolution once I start playing the movie.

It will even downscale mid stream if my connection starts lagging out- going from 720 back to 480.

Its your set-up bro. Check your display settings.

why would he want to do that, some people use netflix to bridge play times inbetween games but might want to leave a game disc in there. This will be a good case scenario for this situation, Ps3 will offer that and thats great but for now Xbox has the exact same features and you can leave Gears 2(completely for example) in the tray while you watch matrix reloaded and wait for your team to be all home from work(granted you or your friends have jobs)

The point is you don't want it to switch resolutions.

The 360 will output 1080 all the time, no matter what the source material is.

In the case of your projector, the stream will degrade, it will get upscaled and the output will still be 1080.

@Ordeith So if it keeps your TV resolution at 720 but the video switches to 480, do you just see a small screen? Or are you saying it upscales the lower quality to 720? I think that is what you mean- if that is so then pretty cool. Mine definitely switches resolutions of the TV to match what output is streaming on my PS3.

I don't know if the upscaler in PS3 is compatible with Netflix,
but the PS3 DOES have a upscaler.
And the upscaler in the PS3 is quite good.
Its very noticeable when you play anime or cartoons or games in 2D.

The upscaler is mostly used for, PS1 or PS2 games and videos you play from the XMB and DVDs.
So I don't know if the upscaler is used in Netflix.

Not sure about the Netflix app as I haven't used on the PS3 in a while, but my PS3 doesn't play nearly as nice as the 360 when hooking up to my projector. The PS3 has much less resolution options and DVDs look like ASS because it won't upscale via component and there is no VGA adapter for the PS3. The 360's hardware accepts a VGA connection and it allows for a more flexible range of resolutions, which looks very crisp on the PJ. That said, I use the PS3 90% of the time for movies for Blu-Ray! :) But, I always use the Xbox when it comes to Netflix or regular DVDs...

I'm not arguing with that. I know the PS3 has a very nice upscaler, which is why I always use it when I'm watching DVD's, and I've never had a problem with it in that respect.

I'm just saying, it doesn't upscale when I'm using Netflix, which makes me believe it's not my settings, when Netflix doesn't have any settings, and I don't have a problem upscaling everything else I use it for.

I'm in no way bashing Netflix on PS3, I'm just saying that for now, I use it on my 360, because it upscales. When the PS3 gets a dedicated app, chances are it will begin to upscale, and I'll gladly use my PS3 for Netflix. :)

Because the 360 can upscale the video of everything that's not HD. For the now, the PS3 can't do that.

I thought the PS3 had a Software Scaler, just not a hardware one?

I watch on a 73 inch DLP that alters the resolution for videos as they come in. I can check to see on the TV what resolution it was running. I've run the same film on either and have not seen a difference in the detected resolution.
Is there a good example video that I could run that would show the scaling on the 360 and wouldn't work on the PS3?

Thanks

@Hunter2223 I know that when I run something on the 360, say.. Season 1 of 24, that's not in HD, the 360 will upscale it to 1080i, which is what I have my 360's resolution set to.

Now if I watch the same thing on PS3, it's stuck at 480i, even though I have my PS3's resolution set to 1080i.

So stuff always ends up looking really low res on the PS3, while it's pretty near DVD quality on 360.

Since the tv we watch netflix off of is a decent sdtv, I have no opinion of hd scale.

But streaming, I've found is much better on the ps3 then the 360. I've watched many movies/shows on both and don't have as many interruptions on my ps3 as I do on my 360.

I still welcome the add on application for the ps3, it'll be nice. But I'm not really bitching about having to put a disc in my ps3. It's not really that hard to you know... Get up off the couch, hit the eject button and put the disc in.

A DVD is native 480i... so saying you see something at DVD quality means you see it at 480i.

But that's picking the Knit right there.

I'll have to try it out with some of the lower resolution stuff. Most of what I watch on Netflix is HD TV and the occasional STARZ movie. Something like picture quality is going to be a very personal thing if the difference isn't dramatic.

This I have noticed. I have almost no interruptions on the PS3 side and had more on my 360. Oddly enough the PS3 is connected wireless via g and the 360 was straight wired. I'd have thought it would be the opposite.

@Hunter2223 I just popped in my PS3 Netflix disc to check.

I pulled up a 24 episode I just watched last night, and it's displaying at 480i, and looks pretty fuzzy and low res.

Now if I were to pull up the same episode on the 360, it would upscale to 1080i and look near DVD quality.

That's my experience, however. Maybe some of you have TV's that will do hardware upscaling or something, I dunno. My HDTV is a few years old and isn't that advanced. =P

@Hunter2223 What I meant was, it looks like it would if I was watching a DVD on my PS3 or 360, which upscales it.

So, on the 360, it looks "upscaled DVD" quality, where on the PS3, it doesn't.

@Kougeru, @Ezio

You guys are debating seperate things.

Ezio is comparing the quality of his picture in specific resolutions, noting that they aren't the quality he'd expect at that resolution (e.g, lacks the quality of a standard DVD).

Kougeru, you are confusing resolution with quality. 480(i or p) is shorthand for a resolution - it does not imply quality. Two different source materials can be delivered at 480 (or any resolution, for that matter) and be vastly different in terms of quality.

If you want an example in the difference of quality at the same resolution, switch back and forth between a sports game when your cable provider is showing an HD feed and a pair of rabbit ears showing the same HD feed. Your antenna feed will be of higher quality, at the same resolution, because it isn't being compressed.

@pickupdoctor

Thank you I have been properly corrected... although the difference between an interlaced and Progressive scan is mostly irrelevant when talking about native resolution.

I think what we may be seeing is mostly a difference in the TV itself. I have 2 HD tvs... the Living room set is a 1080p 40 inch Sony... Quality LCD set. however 480i/p stuff does not look very good, NTSC looks awful. My Lair tv is a 1080p 73 inch DLP, When I first put it in I had just NTSC signal (with the locals in 1080/720) Despite being much larger the NTSC stations were much easier to watch. The 480i stuff looks better, and of course the HD signals are great.

I think (and am no technology master by any stretch) that LCD's drop a lot more in quality of the signal the further from Native you are getting. so 1080 native would look best, with 720 being ok, and 480 getting rough. While I think the DLP technology handles being out of Native much better. This is why to me the PS3 looks just as good or better (probably only on HD stuff) where to someone watching on an LCD would not see that.

My 2 cents.

@Hunter2223 I've seen it to be about the same on PS3 and 360 in terms of picture quality. Also I never liked the left-justified interface on Xbox, I like how everything is centered on PS3 better. People run their mouths about upscaling but it doesn't do anything for picture quality it just sets the output resolution higher. Its still the same SD resolution. This has been disproved years ago with DVD upscaling that the picture quality differences are negligible. Its just like when games are rendered in 640p and upscaled to 1080p, they look no better whatsoever.

Anyway I'm sure the PS3 built-in app by october will improve it even more. Right now I think its basically a wash anyway.

Something is wrong somewhere because the Office streams in HD if I remember correctly, and the Wii cannot output over 480p. I have watched 480p video on my projector and it looks astonishingly bad if it is not at least upscaled. HD streaming from Netflix, on the other hand, looks great.

BTW, PC only just recently got HD Netflix. If you tried it some time ago, you may want to try again.
