If you moan about downloading an update because you are a.) fed up of another update or b.) on limited internet

Then..... WHY THE HELL HAVE YOU BOUGHT A PS3?

I was kinda thinking the same thing when someone said they're updates always take an hour to install. Mine downloaded and installed in less than 10 min last night while I was in the shower.

Alright people, let's get things in perspective here.

Yes, having yet another mandatory update this soon is not that big a deal and not worth complaining too much about BUT it is worth complaining a bit about because every single person who wants to use their PS3 online has to waste 5 minutes of their time just to have a "You may like it" section added to the Playstation Store.

I'm not being a cry baby - I just think they should wait until there is more stuff they can add to the PS3 simultaneously before requiring a mandatory update.

Agreed. This is probably some other functionality under the hood related to security, but this is annoying.

I'm glad it's 'free' on a monthly basis, but I paid good money for my PS3 and its accessories and games. It's well into the thousands of dollars. Sony is forcing much of that stuff to not work at all, when I try to play. I didn't invest in this stuff so that I would have to update when I finally get a chance to relax.

I just think an auto-update feature would make this system much better.

Forget Playstation Plus. A main reason I chose my PS3 over an xbox 360 was so I could boot linux and online support was free.

Compared to my investment, and probably 99% of PS3 gamer investments, Playstation Plus isn't that expensive, but it's the subscription model and I know it's leading to an ugly marketplace. Forget it. I will never pay it.

And charging money for your system to wake up and automatically update itself is appalling. Nothing else from PSN+ has been worth it to me. I already own most of the games they are offering for free.

I will probably be using my PS3 for ten years. That's how long I used my PS2. PSN+ is, what, $1000 for that length of time? And indeed, the only thing I want from it is an auto update feature that costs Sony absolutely nothing to turn on for all systems.

I admire their ability to turn a profit right now, and I'm sure this kind of stinginess is part of it, but it's a shame. I'm a big PS3 fan and some of these choices make me annoyed. Granted, the 360 isn't better. I'm tired of that defense.

nice maths ps+ will be 499.99 for ten years, and your right you don't have to pay for it, you said you wanted automatic updates and there is your solution. So why exactly are you moaning oh that's right just because you can.

Oh, I thought it was $50 for 6 months, not a year. My bad.

There are several reasons Sony has lost so much marketshare. I think your attitude might be one.

I'm not paying $500 for auto update functionality. that is absurd. You tell me that I shouldn't complain about it? I could employ someone to come over and update my PS3 once a week for that price. It's a terrible value.

I'm not paying it, and I am complaining about it. And you're complaining that I have a legit grievance. Your solution is unreasonable and so is your attitude about customer satisfaction.

Normally I don't mind the updates, but this one does seems rather pointless. I doubt anyone was chomping at the bit to get recommendations added to the store. They could have saved this update for later when they had something more useful to add at the same time.

So I've got to wonder if they slipped something else into the update? Maybe they discovered a security flaw with that last update?

This update took less than 5 mins to download and install.
If your moaning that it took ages, then change your internet supplier its not Sony's fault.
Moaning that you don't have an unlimited data plan how is that Sony's fault exactly. If you are a serious gamer then you need an unlimited data plan. Most demos are at least 2 gig.
You should be grateful that you get updates for your console, not matter how small.

No, we shouldn't be grateful for what amounts to an advertisement we are forced to stop playing games and download.

It's not a big deal or anything, but mandatory updates are a hassle and it's OK to complain. Just because MS charges a lot for their service doesn't mean Sony's comparably much better value can't be criticized.

I love the PS3 and think it's a great value, but some of you fanboys need to get a grip. Grateful... for this? No one is.

Grateful for getting updates not this one in particular, or shall we go back to the PS1 PS2 and N64 days where if a new feature was brought out it meant getting a brand new console. This one aside your getting new features added to your console and for free, or should Sony adopt the Apple approach and when a new firmware is released they should charge for it (http://www.gaj-it.com/21426/ipad-users-to-be-charged-for-ios-4-upgrade/) .
Be grateful that your free online service is giving you free updates to better your console of choice.

It's not my internet that's slow, it's Sony's overloaded servers. Xbox update takes less than 10 seconds usually.

Sony updates always take 10 minutes. always. and I am not grateful for stupid shit I didn't ask for, even IF it is free.

Show me a link that says Sony secretly scans your ps3 for mods!
I think your living in the world of an xbot where this happens regularly, but never once have i read a person having their psn account banned for having a modded ps3.

"Be grateful that your free online service is giving you free updates to better your console of choice. "

You know, Sony should be grateful to me. They promised free online and free updates. I gave them money for the system they promised to support. Windows Vista gets free updates, but that's part of what you pay for when you buy the OS.

This isn't terribly complicated. If MS started executing 360 gamers people would tell me to be grateful Sony isn't shooting me. But really, I'd trade every single update to the PS3 for Linux back. I paid $600 for a system and I'm not grateful despite it being about as good as what I expected. It's got great games. I would like to play them when I have a chance. Several times, because I go a while between turning my TV or PS3 on, I have had a chance for a quick Warhawk round and when I turn on my PS3 it needs to update.

And the solution: pay for online service with PSN+. I sure as hell hope Sony doesn't try to market that service with more and more useless updates.

The other day, a friend of mine and I decided to load up LittleBigPlanet. Now, I had loaned the game out to a friend and recently got it back, so I hadn't played it in at least six months. 45 minutes and 10 updates later, we were finally able to load the game up. Compare this to my 360, where if I haven't played an online game within -years- of it's release, the total update time takes under a minute.

Yes, the updates were free, but that doesn't make that 45 minute wait any less irritating to wait on. Not to mention the 5-10 minute updates from games that I buy two days after release (Heavy Rain, I'm looking at you).

Playing my PC.

And indeed, you're right. I go do that when my PS3 fails to play the game I want to play.

It's baffling how much SCEA changed from the PS1 and PS2 era to now, where I need constant annoying updates if I don't fork over the PSN+ fee. I'm not a sucker, Sony. Treat your customers with more respect.

The PS3 has so many badass games, and I love that the system has been improved over time. It's not enough for me... they have taken away some awesome functionality and added some... kinda a wash.

This is mainly annoying because it's completely stupid and unnecessary. This is a stupid waste of time update. It's not so much a big deal as it's an indication Sony isn't giving their best effort to ensure their system is as much fun as possible. Auto update code is written, and some accountant fool decided that PSN+'s content isn't tempting enough without that.

At the end of the day, I'm still very happy with my PS3, but those who start freaking out when anyone complains need to reevaluate their life. There are some legit complaints and it would be pretty easy for Sony to avoid some of these problems.

Or I could take your advice, I guess, and do something else when I want to play my PS3.

Last update to prep for 3D caused me to have to update both Wipeout HD Fury and Super Stardust HD.

I lost all the high scores on Super Stardust and lost custom audio option. I haven't played the game more than 2 times for a total of 10 minutes since that update.

Great update guys, just fracking great.

At least this update didn't take anything AWAY, at least that we know of.

I NEED HELP!!!
When I installed a new hdd in my ps3 (old one took a dump) it asks for "storage media with update 3.41 or later." No problem I say to myself, as I download the update on my pc and put it on my usb stick, (folders are PS3/UPDATE) then plug it into the ps3 and hit start and select and wait, just to discover the ps3 says there is nothing on the usb stick with an update. I am at a loss of what to do, I have tried everything my little mind can think of, maybe the geniuses at Joystiq can help me.
PLEASE HELP ME OH WISE ONES!!!
