Nintendo has announced it financial earnings for the second quarter in its Fiscal 2011, running from April 1, 2010 through June 30, 2010. Net sales, operating income and net income all saw declines compared to the same time last year. Net sales were down to 188 billion yen ($2.16 billion) from 253 billion yen ($2.9 billion), while operating income and net income saw less dramatic shifts, down to 23 billion yen ($264 million) and 25 billion yen ($287 million) from 40 billion yen ($460 million) and 42 billion yen ($483 million) last year, respectively. Nintendo attributes these losses to the appreciation of the yen and a lower DS price point.
3.15 million DS units and 22.42 million units of DS software were sold worldwide during this quarter. On the Wii side, Super Mario Galaxy 2 managed to be the big performer, selling 4.09 million units worldwide since its launch in late May. 3.04 million Wii consoles were sold, backed by 28.17 million units of Wii software worldwide. As far as forecasted earnings go, Nintendo anticipates net sales of 550 billion yen ($6.3 billion) by the end of September 2010 and 1.4 trillion yen ($16 billion) by the end of its Fiscal 2011, March 2011.
It'll be interesting to see how those earnings are affected by Nintendo's upcoming 3DS hardware launch. The company has revealed (via Bloomberg) that it'll finally announce the launch date and price for its latest piece of tech in Japan on September 29.

I think it will be Sunday, November 21... $250 with a game.
Well... not a full priced game, but something similar to Wii Sports... just a small game showing the 3D capabilities of the system.

That's great and all but you know which epic series should return? F-Zero. C'mon, know new game since Gamecube? This makes Captain Falcon angry. If we don't see an F-Zero game come to 3DS with great controls and epic music, he's gonna Falcon PAWNCH right into a large wall of cement bricks. And that someone may just work at Joystiq. Look out.

Sorry, but the system won't be launched in April... that's out of que question.
Nintendo said that the system will be released in every major market before the end of the fiscal year... that is March 2011.

249 is a little much, for me 150-200 is the perfect price point.

Definately, nintendo always sells things that are affordable. So I wouldn't worry.

It was this fiscal year, so the cut off point is the end of March.
Also Nintendo said Reggie was mistaken, so the rumor is it might come out Christmas.

Didn't Reggie say at E3 that it won't launch until 2011? Are you saying April 2011 is to soon or to late? I was thinking next Summer.

Hoping for sometime before Christmas... as long as it's under $250, I'll be the first one in line... true, I'll be unemployed by then because I'll get in line at least a month early if at all possible, but still.

The DSi was announced on October 1st for November 1st (Japan, of course). Now, this is a different kind of release, since it's a whole new generation of DS systems, so it can take two or three months after announcement.
So my guess is from mid-November to mid-December, probably early December (or November 29th). But most definitely this year. And at a $229 price point, max.
And regarding the US, I would expect a late-March or early-April 2011 release. And $230, too.

Sony finally makes a profit...Nintendo takes a dip....well damn....I suppose since the Yen is so strong that Sony could have...made more money if it were weaker? At any rate, I'm sure that they will turn it around this holiday season...

First quarterly net loss for them in about 7 years. 3DS investment combined with the strong yen (and all those 3DS expenses probably were in yen, while the revenue to make up for them comes mostly in weaker dollars/pounds/euros)
It has to be, anyway. Their entire model is based on profitability despite sales levels, so its kinda hard to screw that up.
