GamerBytes has a nice long interview with DeathSpank creator Ron Gilbert, and while he waxes philosophical on all sorts of stuff found in the excellent XBLA/PSN hack-'n-slash title, he says he's not sure what he plans to do next. But iPhone gaming has grabbed his attention for the moment: "iPhone games are very interesting to me right now. I play a lot of them, and they're neat because then you can do two- or three-people teams to make those things," he says.
Making DeathSpank was tougher than expected, according to Gilbert -- he started out wanting to make Monkey Island meets Diablo, but the Diablo half of the game was more difficult to balance than he'd thought it would be. Not only did he have to balance weapons and combat, but he had to deal with DeathSpank's own character attributes. A class system was originally planned, but Gilbert wanted to play his character (which originally came from a Flash cartoon series), not yours, so the team eventually went with the "Hero Cards" system.
Gilbert also says he hopes that DeathSpank influences the downloadable market -- rather than simply house reissues of older games or big budget titles, he hopes that downloadable game platforms can be a place for originality, and that "we can get some really good, interesting games in the download space." We'll hack and slash to that!

Thank you, Ron Gilbert, for making such an amazing game, and if you want, I'm willing to have your babies.
Just let me know.

FTFY. I'm relatively certain Mr. Gilbert hasn't made a turd yet.

@(Unverified) Death Spank rocks and the ONLY (looks at Limbo) game that is worth its $15 price on XBLA/PSN for this summer so far.

@Victoryismine52 There are still journos out there that like to pretend PSN doesn't exist, I think.

Deav devs,
This may be a shock to you, but the iPhone is NOT the only phone that can run apps and/or games. I think you may not know that, so I am telling you this so that you can try your creativity on other non-monopoly phones

I own an Evo so you KNOW I'm not a fanboy when I say that there's a reason why most dev's flock to the iPhone. Look at it's games compared to the games on Android Market. It's like comparing 8-bit NES games to bloody PS1 games.
Perhaps it's revenue issue, or perhaps it's because there's just not enough on board space for large Apps (fixed with Froyo thankfully); the point is games on the iPhone look gorgeous while us Android dudes are stuck with lame time wasters.

Deathspank is one of the best downloadable games I've played in years . I got it on PS3 , even though one of the reviewers here said there was " noticeable tearing " . I never even noticed wtf he was talking about . I have both systems ( Wii doesn't count ) , but I prefer to get my games over the PSN , what little life is left in my 360 is being saved for Gears 3 and Fable 3 .

There is noticeable tearing with this game on the PS3 and it is unfortunate. I bought and played it on my PS3 and noticed it. However, it isn't a big deal at all and it would only bother somebody if they were looking for it.
I absolutely loved this game... sorta wished I wouldn't have finished it so quickly.

@big0jeff
Yep. What was with the cliff hanger ending though? I can't see Deathspank in that theater... but hopefully it means they got something up their sleeves for a sequel.

This game was the bomb. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Yes, there were flaws, but the insanely awesome bits made them a non-issue.
It's the first arcade title I wasn't able to put down. I want DLC, and I'll pay for it.
Maybe have the cheevs be a bit more tough next time, I 100%'d it very simply, and I'm not that good at doing that.
Anyway, good job Ron Gilbert. Now if only Schafer could have used this mentality when building Brutal Legend, maybe it wouldn't have been epic fail. Or maybe the two of you just need to get back together. Because damn if this isn't just an awesome game. Awesome sauce, even.

Deathspank was a ton of fun, and is definitely girlfriend-crack. It's interesting that the two games that seem to have turned my girlfriend on to "gaming alone" have been Limbo and Deathspank, and she's slowly making her way through both as I work nights this week.
The couch-co-op is sadly really only a girlfriend thing...I can't see a fully-fledged, card-carrying GAMER being satisfied with playing as the 2nd player poof the wizard or whatever his name is called. But seriously, my girlfriend loves it.
No sexism just my experience with it.
