StarCraft 2 phishing scams looking to harvest Battle.net info
19
Completely unsurprising news now, as your usual thieves and unsavory types have crawled out from the woodwork to capitalize on the launch of the biggest PC title perhaps ever, StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty. These "people" are sending out phishing emails in the hopes of getting folks' Battle.net account info, all under the guise of helping you get an activation key.
It comes with the territory: Battle.net and Blizzard's games are by no means impervious to these scams, nor have they been in the past, but Siliconera's example of one phishing email presents a pretty convincing ruse. Hopefully, in some small way, we can all help fewer people fall prey to this particular trick.

I've received two of these recently. One was for SC2 (thanks for your purchase!) and the other was something about migrating a WoW character. Thing is, my WoW account has been dead for years. I'm just angry these bastards have one of my email addresses now. :P

You should try not to use "trainers" as well... seems like these days they're built for one purpose: to STEAL YOUR INFOZ!

I got a few the other day, very professionally done... double whammy because I already couldn't access my Battle.net account. It wouldn't accept my password. I just changed it a month ago after my account was hacked; someone stole my info, initiated a paid character transfer, and took my wife's WoW stuff. When I couldn't get in to activate StarCraft 2, I started to worry. I checked for Blizzard correspondence and didn't have any, so I looked in my spam filter. It had emails from "Blizzard Entertainment" saying my email was successfully changed to "k****@hotmail.com," and that another paid transfer was being processed. One actually came from wowaccountadmin@blizzard.com. Both contained URLs to "report any suspicious activity" that led straight to a phishing site.
I called Blizzard and (after an hour on hold) was relieved to find that they could reset my password, and that no records existed of another character transfer or an email change. The lady I spoke with was very polite and helpful, too -- something I wasn't sure to expect with the volume of calls they're undoubtedly getting. Needless to say my authenticator is in the mail... I've had enough account scares with b.net.

When I called a week ago, They were really helpful... something you would never expect from any Customer Support, its Very Fast, and Helpful.
Its too bad these people get their enjoyment from hacking others accounts, and its good you got your back :)

That would explain why it took me 3 hours of redialing trying to get into Blizzard Customer Support to get an account problem fixed the other day. I wasn't sure if the emails I was getting were form Blizzard or not (apparently one was and one wasn't), so I called them because one had said my account was compromised and the other was telling me my account was being suspended pending an investigation and I haven't touched that account in years.

Yep, I've been getting these too. Really annoying, but I'm glad others are aware of the issue.

Its Terrible people like this get their enjoyment from doing this to others... If your going to cause distress to others you should seriously either Die, or Get a Life.
Blizzard needs to do more than offer an Authenticator for purchase.

I hate these mails. I get about 5-10 Battle.net/WoW/Blizzard scam mails every day, and almost nothing else in my spam box. How about mixing it up a bit?
Excuse me for being so blunt, but these mails are only still sent because some of you dunces still fall for them.

Also because people keep buying gold for WoW. Most Chinese goldsites(and they are Chinese, I've gotten dozens, if not hundreds, of phishing e-mails, and EVERY URL is registered in China) get their gold now by hacking accounts and selling everything and mailing the gold to one of their minions. Now that Blizz has linked all their games under one unified Battlenet account, anyone who has a battlenet account(even those who have never played WoW) aren't safe from the hackers who are only after WoW account info.
