This is brought up every. single. time. this game (or DotA) is mentioned. I don't get it, it's the internet, why would you ever care about what a 12 year old calls you?

I read that as "Heroes of Newark" which already sounds like a way better game.

I'm imagining a light gun FMV game where you are Corey Booker's wingman on one of his midnight patrols of the city. "Time to take out the trash" *click-click*

Honestly, HoN is not a bad game on paper. However, it's community is what drags it down.

I'm speaking from experience here, the HoN community is vicious and really is not accepting of noobs. If you've never played Dota or a dota style game, you're really going to be wanting to quick. They will insist on you leaving if you're terrible or what not, or even vote kick you from their team. Everybody is hostile with each other.

On the other hand, League of Legends is a much better recreated version of Dota. Every 2-3 weeks there are updates that are constantly adding new champions into the game and balancing the gameplay. The community for LoL can be just as aggressive sometimes, but I've found more people in LoL are willing to accept newer players especially at lower levels. Just be willing to put up with some peoples egos and you'll enjoy yourself with this game. So many different champions to pick and choose from.

I can also tell you that Riot is committed to making their game as best as possible, they're constantly listening to community feedback definitely one of the best game developers I have ever communed with. Worst gaming experience i've ever had. Cussed out, abused and yelled at. Those were my teammates! And i was on the newb server. I feel sad for the developers and their families saying this, but i wish this game would fail and close shop asap.

Sorry that you had a bad experience. I have to admit there are a lot of elitist players out there but you can't take it personally. I never do when I play. Some people are hardcore even as newbs (0.0 KDR - 1:1 KDR) but if you listen to what they say and take it with stride, you win. Wishing a game and community would shut down because a few people ruin the game experience is kind of harsh.

Not gonna lie, the community needs work. However, S2 isn't blind to this, and they're trying to do better. They just implemented a "Report a Player" feature, so if someone starts cussing you out/greifing/being a jerk, you can report him and he'll likely be temporarily banned.

It's tough to say whether I like this or League of Legends more. I've found the community of LoL to be better overall, but the gameplay seems a bit too simplified. Conversely, I like the gameplay of HoN more, but their community is worse. I would have said that HoN was more suited to competitive play, but LoL just fixed that with one of their latest updates. So I won't.

In any case, try both now that they're free. In both cases, the difficulty curve is high, but stick with it and you'll get a game with nigh infinite replay value that's a lot of fun.

I can only imagine this as an RPG where you play the role of Bebe Neuwirth's bodyguard

Glad to see HoN finally get some attention on here.

Free players are restricted to No stats only servers for the weekend. Not as much rage on no stats (no one cares about them) although there will probably be some greifers due to the f2p week.


@ Community complaints: Get some thicker skin. I'm in agreement with Ashitaka, who cares what some 12 year old thinks about you? Chances are anyways that you're probably doing something wrong and should try and fix it.

I will say that that's the other thing I really dislike about LoL, their advertising is flat out annoying. (calling out HoN for costing money and such)

League of Legends can have a crummy community too. I don't understand how a game like this can have a worse community than a semi-realistic game like Call of Duty, where you're killing people with real world weaponry, in politically charged settings, too.

I mean, in Legends, I'm in a colorful, cartoon-like jungle setting, playing next to ninjas, pirates, and ninja hobbits, and yet people take the game more seriously there than they do in a virtual Battle of Stalingrad. What gives?

@Nadril You know that's the other thing I really dislike about most HoN players, instantly they're trying to pick a fight with the LoL Community. Just proves that the community hasn't changed at all since I left it.

I personally spoke with my wallet. And my friends did too. What was awesome is that i never told my friends about it. They are from all walks of life and yet came to the same conclusion. It's not fun to go online and get abused. Thats what we got married for amirite? First post had it down pat.

Correct me if I'm wrong but no one had even mentioned LoL until you came in to bad mouth HoN and pimp your ref code for LoL, and now you're saying that it's HoN players trying to "pick a fight"? I have seen a lot of HoN vs. LoL arguments on the internet and the badmouthing always starts from the LoL side, usually with people like you trying to get hits on your ref code.

I'll try it. In the beta i joined a "noob server" and got kicked for being a noob.
I didn't even get a chance to really experience the game.
I enjoyed LoL though, so if the community's improved i might like this.

I like this game because I get to hate everyone I play with! Heh, seriously, if you don't have friends who play videogames, how is any competitive online experience fun? People act like HoN is in an unusual place because of an unfriendly online community... really? UNFRIENDLY PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET!?!?

My advice, if you are looking for an internet creeper to hold your hands when you play video games, I hear there's a sweet Care Bears MMO coming out.

If you REALLY want to get the most out of this game, get a friend to join you when you start, that way you have some one to back you up when you run into the dumbasses on HoN. Most of the idiots who talk trash in HoN were noobs mere weeks before. Trust me, I know from experience.
As for LoL, the actual control style just threw me off, as well as having skills that just regenerate and dont cost any energy/mana. It seemed like Dota for kids and after playing HoN, I just couldn't find a reason to try LoL again.

You guys are very correct about the community. But not everyone is that way, you just need to get on and find someone who is noob friendly. My girlfriend started playing a while back and she didn't run off because of the community so you guys should be fine. DotA is still better than HoN and LoL so I would recommend getting DotA. But HoN is still very fun. LoL is almost nothing like DotA so if you are a hardcore fan of DotA like myself just try HoN instead of LoL.

The community isn't unbearably horrible if you start out the right way. Instead of going to a normal game with barely any knowledge of the game, take the tutorial first. After you got the basics, go to "noobs only" games. Preferrably unranked ones as well, which are marked with a red-gold symbol. This isn't a game you usually get a hang of during the first few rounds, but it definitely is worth learning.

I was in the beta for both HoN and LoL and think that LoL is the vastly superior game that actually builds upon the original DoTA instead of basically cloning it, as HoN does.

LoL is also free.

The horrible community in HoN is a big part of why I didn't enjoy it, and while LoL's can sometimes not be the most welcoming environment, it is much better than HoN's.

In short, if you want to play DoTA with updated graphics and all the arseholes from the original game then play HoN. If you want to try something a little different with a slightly more appealing community, and don't want to pay a cent, go with LoL.
