PS3 firmware 3.41 updated to resolve HDD upgrade issues
36
There was a notable issue with PS3 Firmware 3.41: Some PS3 owners reportedly encountered problems when they installed a different hard drive after applying the update. The PlayStation Blog informs us that an update to the update (wait, what?) should alleviate HDD replacement issues and is available for download right now.

Now that guy in the comments will stop complaining about "Joystiq ignoring the problem" as if they're Sony customer service instead of an awesomely awesome videogame NEWS blog.

I love that my consoles receive updates but I hate that said updates generally appear poorly tested.
Having all of your 'insert precious data here' deleted is heartbreaking.
I know of too many incidents where the end-users simply sold everything related to the product because of a data loss.
It's more than an issue. It can sway a fan of your products and drive away potential new consumers. People don't like losing their stuff.

Seems like your overreacting a bit, where in the article does it say that the firmware will brick/erase anything. Did you read it? The only problem is that, as the article states, is that there might be an issue with people replacing their old hdd with a new one. It probably had to be formatted before actually putting it in so it should be a non issue.

I still think this update was pointless. Pages in thestore seem to take longer now. :/

I'm glad to see Sony is committed to keeping HDDs for PS3s easy to upgrade. I haven't upgraded mine yet, but I've always planned on doing it when I need more space, and a new HDD is way cheaper than a new console.

So... it's 3.41.
But you have to install a higher firmware to get a bricked system running don't you? You can't re-install the same level of firmware?
Bahh, I shouldn't even be thinking of a situation like this. Damn you Sony and your firmware issues!

Great, still doesn't fix my now bricked PS3. $149 + $29 + taxes to repair a problem they caused. Not to mention my PS3 (aka Brick) is holding a Netflix Blu-ray disc hostage! Who would ever need a manual release triggered by a something as primitive as a paperclip? Surely not the masterfully engineered and flawless brick.
Come on Sony you are better than this!

Yeah, are you trying to replace your HDD? Cause that is what the problem/solution revolves around.

I ran the update via XMB and left the room. I have a stock fat PS3 80GB MGS4 edition. I have tried everything to ressurrect it! Removing and reconnecting cables, reseating HDD, replacing HDD, holding buttons down, etc...
In all cases flicking the PSU switch in the back to the ON position causes the PS3 to blink the red light and beep three times. No video, no power controls, nothing!

Have a friend who's PS3 locks up on occasion when updating. Here is the easiest solution:
1) Remove the HDD
2) Hook the HDD up to a PC(we use a USB SATA enclosure)
3) Use the Quick Format utility. (No need for a full format, your PS3 will do that itself)
4) Re-install the HDD into the PS3
5) Download the latest update from the PS support page to a thumb drive.
6) Reboot the system, let it format the HDD, let it update the firmware from the thumb drive.
7) Enjoy.

If your PS3 has a new HDD, and it wasnt taking the old 3.41 firmware. It was updated so you can now use it.
Those who have 3.41 on there PS3s, dont have to bother."
Proof; from EU Blog:
Customer: "So, what happens if you already have 3.41 installed and have had no side effects up to now?"
EU Blog Dude "Ignore all of this!"

Another update to install? Ugh. It seems like every time I go to use my PS3 there's an update to bother with.

@Faceless Troll This is a silent update it says, you don't have to install it unless you are having problems.
So you won't be bothered having to update to this one.
I couldn't figure out why I was forced to 3.41 in the first place.

I updated to 3.41 last week with an upgraded HD and my PS3 ran without any issues :? (maybe I downloaded the updated 3.41?)

GAH! I hate those copyrighted saves. When I upgraded my HDD I was feeling so special copying all my saves over, and then I got the shaft with Resi 5.
On a related note, new harddrive, upgraded to 3.41... no problems... GO ME!

All my (copyright protected) saves transferred over fine, and that includes all of Capcom's games which I have game saves for. It's when I try to transfer over a single game/save file where it won't allow me.
Will it now allow you even if you did the entire HDD transfer (where you backed it up to an external HD)?

I turned on my PS3 lst week after being off for a few months and it hasnt blown up so thats good. My wii however hasnt been on since like last year January so if i go online with that (lol) it might have a mental breakdown.

A lot of people were complaining last week when they were trying to upgrade their HDDs and were having issues with the 3.41 update, and pulling out all the excuses. But truth be told, Sony has always speedily resolved its software issues. Maybe I have lower standards but I don't get that irked. I mean these 7th-gen consoles (well minus the Wii) are pretty complex, heavy duty computers. They're bound to go a lil nutty sometimes.

My PS3 freezes at least twice a day since downloading the new update.
Apparently there's an issue every time they release an update.

Can verify that the update now works for HD upgrades. You will need to re-download the PS3UPDAT.PUP to a flash drive.
