Demon's Souls' brand of punishment proves potent in the UK

Namco Bandai previously announced its intentions to publish From Software's punishing dungeon crawler, Demon's Souls abroad and the verdict is in: it's apparently been a big hit. The publisher told Eurogamer the initial run -- a "Black Phantom Edition" priced at £44.99 (€42), which includes the game, soundtrack, art book and strategy guide -- has sold out.
"I can't give you a number, but what I mean by an 'amazing success' is that all the stock we built of the Black Phantom Edition has sold out (apart from dribs and drabs)," said Lee Kirton, marketing and PR manager for Namco Bandai Partners UK. "For a game that's been out a long time overseas we believe it to be a success. Reviews scores and coverage have been amazing." He then added that Namco Bandai hasn't sold "hundreds of thousands of units, but we've been pleased."
On Friday, Namco Bandai will launch a standard edition of the game in the UK for a bargain price of £34.99 (€54), five pounds cheaper than the launch price of most new games.

I'm guaranteed to get downvoted due to the off-topic nature of this comment, but I'm wondering if I should pick up Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, or God of War III tomorrow.

Demon's Souls will give you the most bang for your buck. Heavy Rain; it's a fun game but really I had no desire to replay once I knew the ending. God of War III, i have not played so i can't really comment; but action games don't tend to have alot of replay value. Still, all three are awesome.

@Shadowbender I've played God of war 3 , awesome game , does not hold a candle to Demon's Souls in terms of addictive replayability . I've heard of people playing through DS over 50 times . I'm not sure how it works yet , but apparently you carry over your abilities and weapons into each succesive playthrough while the enemies get tougher .

Demon's Souls. I found out the twist to Heavy Rain, so I never bothered to play through it, but I can't imagine replayability to be all that fun on such a story-sensitive game.
GOW III is fantastic, but there still isn't any real incentive to play through again, and it's only 10-13 hours long.
With Demon's Souls, I've gone through the same sections of a few of the worlds countless times just to level up. It's insanely difficult and impossible to go through a world without dying at least once heading to the boss, but when you do get there, it's about as fulfilling as a game can be. I'm just over 20 hours in and am probably only 20-30% through it.

I haven't played Heavy Rain so I can't comment. Both GoW3 and DS are awesome games, but totally different. DS is a love it or hate it game though; if you hate it you'll probably quit before your first play through. If you love it you'll be replaying ad infinitum because it is weirdly addictive. It's kind of like playing an MMO where you want to keep grinding and farming, you know it's repetitive, but you can't stop yourself.
If I had to decide I'd go for GoW3, even though I love DS, but only because I am a big fan of the first two GoW games (plus the PSP one).

@Shadowbender Go with Demon's Souls.
GOW3 is the third game in a franchise, so GOW1 and GOW2 would pretty much scratch the same itch. But DS is more unique. It's not as polished though

I'm going to go against the grain here, I thought DS was a /terrible/ game. Seriously, within an hour of starting I wanted to break the controller and throw a temper tantrum.
The problem with DS is that it has no build up. It just throws you in the deep end of the pool. I might not have minded the difficulty if I had gotten into it gradually so I could figure out what I was doing.
Also, DS epitomizes the "punish failure" gameplay philosophy vs. the "reward success" gameplay philosophy. For example, if you die, even on the boss of a dungeon, the game sends you to the BEGINNING OF THE EFFIN' DUNGEON.
Get GoW III, its better paced and is an all-around awesome game.

Atlus published it in America only. It's not an Atlus game at all. It's a FROM game. Sony of Japan published it in Japan and then Namco Published it in Europe.
Just like how 3D Dot Game Heroes is published by Atlus but made by FROM again. And same situtation as above except South Peak publishes 3D Dot in Europe.

I've started playing this game again and forgot how awesome it was. I've put around 150 hours into the game and it hasn't gotten dull, (I stopped before due to frustration) I can't wait for a sequel and I'm guessing Sony is going to actually publish this one world wide this time.

Fantastic game, hoping for a sequel. I would just like to see them modify the multiplayer a little bit to make it easier to coop play with friends.
The first time somebody 'invaded' my realm was ridiculously intense. I had pretty much forgotten about it and it took me completely by suprise. I died without much of a fight.
In an effort to heal my bruised ego I immediately invaded somebody else's game, only to go up against somebody who, though around the same level as me, had every awesome piece of gear in the game (you can tell based on the unique look of the weapons and armor), took my feeble hit, and then one shotted me with a giant 2 hander. I gotta admit, it was pretty pathetic and yet still quite hilarious.

yeah i've only killed two invaders (because now i'm finally much stronger), but every time i invade a game, it's someone with all the heaviest armor that moves like a bumblebee who smashes through my shield with one hit and kills me in less than 5 seconds.

The strategy involved during the boss fights in this game will be highly reminiscent of those during Shadow of the Colossus although the fight itself will remain unique.
If that corellation isn't something that makes people want to play this game, I'd be suprised. Both games are masterpieces.(Masterpieci? Masterpie? Mmmmm. Masterpie.)

I'm somewhat of a cautious gamer, I'm fairly new to the console world, having cut my teeth in gaming back in the original DOOM on the PC. I like to read a ton of reviews before I buy a game, only because I have a family, 4 kids, a job, etc. I cannot devote a ton of time to games that I don't like. So, researching a game before I buy it is important to me.
Lately PC gaming just got to be too expensive for me with regards to hardware upgrades. So I dusted off a PS3 that had been given to me years ago as a birthday present and gave it a go. I buy my console games via Amazon, and used for the most part. Demon's Souls has always intrigued me, I watched countless YouTube videos on the game, reviews, etc., and I decided to pull the trigger, being somewhat anxious to get the game and not wait for it to ship I visited a local Gamestop where I know a few of the people fairly well. They refused to sell me Demon's Souls, here is the exchange:
Employee - Hey, what's up?
Me - I'm going to bite the bullet and get Demon's Souls
Employee - Sorry dude, I'm not gonna sell it to you
Me - LOL, what? Seriously?
Employee - Yeah, you'll come back and want to kill me, lol
Me - Seriously? "I paused in disbelief", why?
Employee - It is the most frustrating game, you'll hate me for it
Me - LOL.....well, ok......and we BS'd then I left....
Fast forward - I could not shake the desire to plunge into DS, if it was as truly hard as everyone said I wanted to meet and beat that challenge. I bought the game from Amazon, used, and it is a damn freaking, frustrating game, I hate it, and I LOVE IT. It reminds me of an old PC game called Blade of Darkness, which was difficult as well, but damn satisfying. Demon's Souls is the same way; it lacks clear direction, you really need to scour the internet to understand builds, etc. But I pump my fist after I defeat a boss that killed me 10x prior. Dodging and parrying enemy attacks then landing a death blow never gets old.
The multiplayer aspect is so original and unique, I had no idea of the level of complexities this game possessed. This game is a masterpiece - bottom line.

it's tough, but not that tough. i have one game i've been playing for about 170 hours (on ng++), and i started fresh game and haven't died once in the first 6 hours. it's just about learning how to play.
most common causes of death? falls, someone invading my game, and one hit kills (which still happens even at level 170). it seems to average 1 level an hour. sometimes it will drive you nuts, other times it's fantastic fun.

I bought the game the day it was released in the US and even though I play other games here and there I always go back to this one. Other than MGS4 I've never taken the time to research as much as I did with Demon's Souls. It's the first game I actually still look up on forums or websites to see if there are any special occasions going on like PBWT or PWWT events. If you happen to see a bluestone wanderer wearing nothing but an "Officials Cap" holding two Uchigatanas named IamNotinKey on 2-2 please summon me! Who doesn't love running and jumping around with Flamelurker? Its like jumping around at the park with your dog.....ha
