@Meghterb1985 No, I think hating Konami is a perfectly appropriate response in this situation. They hate us, after all.

That doesn't mean that you can hate them over a mediocre game. Well, you can, no one's stopping you, but it's morally wrong. After all Konami has done for us, it's not right to hate them over a mediocre Castlevania.

@Meghterb1985 Well with reviews like this I guess this won't be coming out on PSN, and to think this was the only game of XBLA summer that I was considering of paying $15 for. Oh well I'll just save my money and keep playing Yakuza 3 and Demon's Souls which are both very difficult to put down once started.

@Meghterb1985 I hate Konami more for choosing now to take Castlevania in a a genre direction that is nowadays flooded, while, as this release demonstrates, giving no more thought or effort to the classic metroidvania style games that we know and love.

By 'real HD Castlevania' I totally mean a game that plays like the Castlevanias of yore, and not a 'better HD'. This game looks absolutely gorgeous, IMO.

5/10 is pretty close to terrible in my book. But in his defense, he did say "executed" terribly and not that the whole game was terrible.

Yes, I did. 2.5 out of 5 isn't really that terrible. More along the lines of mediocre, but not god awfully terrible. 1 to 1.5 is terrible IMO.

@S0lid Sn4ke In the Joystiq review system 2 and a half would mean that it's slightly better than "only get this game if you're starved for the genre," and with what appears to be the infinitely superior metroidvania Shadow Complex on XBLA, this isn't the case.

But in terms of review scores, 50% is bad on most scales.

Anyway you're worried way too much about the score. One, the review flat out says "Save your money". Two, as pointed out by Dawg605, I didn't say the game was wholly terrible, but rather that they executed the co-op Castlevania concept terribly. This should have been so much more than a boss rush mode. And why no local LAN co-op? Terrible omission. They re-use everything (thus saving themselves lots of time) and the best they can come up with is a woefully overpriced MP Boss Rush?

Honestly, I'm still going to try the demo because I'm a huge Castlevania fan, but I can already see from the reviews that this isn't going to be the game I was hoping for when it was first revealed. So, yes, terrible execution IMO.

@Vidikron

this is exactly why i do not like "rated" reviews, everyone completely disregards the writing and looks straight for the numbers (or stars in this case) and bases their judgement off of that.

and just to throw in my opinion, 2.5/5 is AVERAGE. anything lower would be considered "needs improvement". i find it strange how people are having trouble wrapping this around their heads, didnt you all take math? you understand the concept right?

@SecretAgentHam

Unfortunately video game scores are skewed more towards school grades than a balanced scale. While 5 SHOULD be average, it's almost invariably right in the thick of "awful" territory.

tl;dr Numeric reviews FTL.

I remember when I first heard of a HD downloadable Castlevania I was excited as hell. Then I saw screenshots and actual gameplay and almost immediately lost all interest. It's a shame 'cause the concept is awesome.

When I first heard there would be an XBLA CV, I was expecting something just like Portrait of Ruin, a co-op adventure. That would have been enough for me. This just looks like a challenge pack. Weak.

Hmmm. I was eager to play this game, and am still holding out hope for a PSN release, but this review does instill the fear in me that this game could very well be a case of wasted potential. Hopefully if it comes to PSN, it will be tweaked and modified in the interim.

I hated this until I found out you can zoom the map in and out and you can save all the gold and items you find even if you fail the level. Much much better as a multi player experience but why can't you pause the game when you are in single player? Also some of the achievements seem a bit on the difficult side.

I played it this morning for an hour without reading any reviews...it looks just like the older Castlevanias, but the whole concept through me off immediately. Short levels, no exploration, a time limit? You can't even pause or change equipment at will. It doesn't seem bad, but not what I expected. I hope multi-player is better.

I for one disagree with this review I love this game its like a little castlevania with some diablo and some minor puzzle solving.
each character has his or her own abilites weapons and such and yeah you can "buy" things like weapons for some characters that use them some rely on magic but they wont be as good as what you get from a drop or chest in the game and the equip point are good cause if you find a new awesome weapon you can just go there and equip it.
the only thing I dont like is the time limit I understand why its there but they should let you turn it off if your playing alone or with just your friends. I also think this should of been $10 tops. sure the other releases might be better but I like castlevania and if you wanted to play something like castlevania with your friends this is good coulda been alot better but maybe this is the start of a new way to play a classic game. hopefully they do more take feedback and release some content or in the future a whole new awesome game like this one but ya know better.

Honestly, I'm not even that impressed by its looks. With HD resolution graphics, poor animation is even more obvious to me. That huge head enemy looks ridiculous, for example.

I'm going to try it out, but I would have preferred a normal adventure.
