Torchlight 2 announced for Spring 2011 [update]
35
Sleeper hit Torchlight is set to receive its first sequel next spring. At this rate, the dungeon-crawling digital distribution darling may release its third entry before Diablo 3 even begins to stir from its long development slumber.
The big change this time out for the dungeon crawler will be online co-op. Runic Games notes that the game will feature a free peer-to-peer matchmaking service to "meet new players of a similar level and interest." And this time around, the world will include "expansive" randomized outdoor environments -- don't worry, the dungeons are still there -- along with "random instanced and persistent dungeons." Expect new monsters, weather effects, a new story and LOOT!
Torchlight 2 will be playable at GamesCom later this month in Germany and at PAX Prime (Seattle) in September. The game will "initially" launch as a downloadable title in Spring 2011.
Update: Torchlight 2's initial launch will be on PC, with the Mac version rolling in at a "TBD" date. As for consoles, a Runic representative tells Joystiq, "We would love to bring both games to console, but we have no plans for it at this time."

Good! Lack of co-op was the only thing that prevented me from buying the original. I just can't motivate myself to go on loot hunts in single player games.

@xakari
I bought it for $5 on Steam and haven't played it much. It's not fun enough to stand on it's own (without multiplayer). Also there are some pretty rudimentary things they got wrong that are incredibly annoying:
1. When you send your pet to sell your crap, the game shouldn't pause with a giant billboard "pop up" that tells you your pet is back and how much money he made. That totally interrupts the flow of the game. All they needed to do was have the pet bark or meow (or whatever) and have some numbers float above your head like what happens when you pick up some gold. How could they not know this would be so annoying? Didn't they playtest the game? In what world is it a good idea to interrupt a massive boss battle (or horde of minions attacking you) so your pet can tell you how much money he made while he was gone?
2. Similar thing with fishing. You don't need to click an OK box every time!
3. What's up with the long loading times? It takes 20-30 seconds to bring up the character select screen, then 20-30 seconds to load the town, then 20-30 seconds to load the dungeon. You're talking up to a minute and a half before you can even go dungeon crawling!
4. And of course, the big one: MULTIPLAYER! What's the point in decking out my character in awesome gear if I can't show it off to anybody and make them jealous? Or give my old gear to my friends to help them out.
So, I fell for the trick you just tried to play. People told me you couldn't go wrong for $5 and I believed them. Well, all I can say is that I wasted $5.

give it to me at the same price as the first and i'm there. I love games that feel exactly like a blizzard game but aren't made by blizzard. there aren't many out there. Come to think of it Torchlight is the only one. and yes I know that the Runic team is main made of the the old Condor/Blizzard North teams.

I really wish there would be another steam sale on the first one. I don't know HOW I managed to miss it before, but somehow I did :(

Sweet! Like people stated before, co-op was the only thing missing in the first game. Can't wait to play this with my friends later.

I like the concept of these kind of games. I just wish they had an option to let you move with keys.
Being a console gamer predominantly from 1983 to 2005 has kind of made it hard for me to play newer and older PC games where it's action based, and you have to click to move. Seems way too foreign and weird to me :(

I'm excited for Diablo 3 and all, but it seems crazy that these guys are getting two games out within the time since Blizzard announced D3. I loved Torchlight and I'm sure this will make a great addition to the collection. Probably tide me over til Diablo 3 launches eventually.

Game is now perfect. What better way to spend time while waiting for Diablo 3? Hell, what if TL2 is better?

yes! who cares about the MMO, co-op was the only thing I was waiting for. Lets hope they keep the ability to mod the game as well as that will keep the game going.

I got the first one back during the steam holiday sale, installed it, and still haven't played it. I should really try getting into it.

I just noticed that Joystiq doesn't allow for comments with swearing in them. They don't even tell you that you can't do it - your comment just doesn't appear. I was going to talk about how Torchlight is great and how I'm afraid that Runic's current Korean MMO giant owner will run the game into the ground, but since Joystiq seems intolerant of genuine expression, I'll refrain from visiting the site anymore.

Yay! I'm so happy we got a sequel with co-op instead of the MMO. Co-op was the only thing missing from the original (that wasn't added/fixed with a mod).

I love Torchlight but I don't play it at all (that may change), because I find crawling through dungeons really boring. However, Torchlight 2, with its outdoor areas will make me enjoy the dungeons (because I like variety and I won't find dungeons boring if they aren't the only place you explore).
Glad they are making a sequel that I will enjoy before they release the MMO which I won't buy. Runic games are legends.

Torchlight is one of the best Diablo-esque game I've played. Plus there are lots of mods on their forum which is fun to play with especially that it's limited only to single player. I can't wait for the sequel now that they included it some co-op multiplayer. Yay!
I wonder how the MMO version looks though... hmmmm...
