Blizzard now moderating 'inappropriate' StarCraft 2 maps
83
Look out, all you naughty StarCraft 2 map makers out there, Blizzard is watching. A thread popped up on the StarCraft 2 community forum in which a user named Cyrileo complained of his map being removed from Battle.net. According to Cyrileo, the mapped was deemed "inappropriate" by Blizzard and subsequently deleted. Further on in the thread, as reported by our cohorts at Big Download, Blizzard community manager Lylirra noted that all maps are "subject to review to ensure that they promote a fun and safe environment for all players." Should a map fail to meet these criteria, it will be deleted and the creator contacted.
The reason such moderation wasn't enacted in the first StarCraft, according to community manager Bashiok, was that Blizzard simply didn't have the staff. Things have changed this time around, so take note of Blizzard's official policy on inappropriate content: "Any content found to be offensive in nature has no place on Battle.net. Such content can be changed or removed, and the publisher warned or suspended." Bashiok noted further that Blizzard is working to improve the system, which will hopefully offer map makers more detailed reasons for removal in the future. As a general rule of thumb, we'd say avoid building maps shaped like wangs.

All the hornballs banned from WoW just lost another guilty pleasure, huh? I guess Blizzard just has the tendancy to bring out the freaks.

@Mrguy you know that guy It's not just blizzard. Think back even to Sim City, any time you can play items on a map you can map your own 'art'.

I'm actually kind of fine with this to a certain extent. There are a surprising number of maps like "See Kerrigan Naked!" and maps/lobbies that advertise websites in StarCraft and Warcraft III. Blizzard did police maps in WC3 to a certain extent, but it was more difficult as all the maps were locally hosted instead of being uploaded to Battle.net.

I was thinking more along the lines of a "STFU and get back in your hole" button.

Won't someone PLEASE! think of the children!
Everyone knows killing is less evil than anything phallic shaped.
Still, to me this marks the start of the end of Blizzard as we grew up with. They don't understand what corner they're turning. The culture that surrounded Blizzard is being destroyed for a more corporate one. Personally, when I think of blizzard now I no longer am filled with warm feelings. Not because of this, but their RealID and other decisions in the recent past point towards them becoming like EA and company. Perhaps activision is finally getting their drones to work.

Allowing people to create custom maps, and then saying they aren't allowed to make custom maps. Shame shame.
Another good reason not to buy the game.
I remember the good days of Far Cry Evolution on Xbox. There was a map called something like Welcome to Manhood. You went up a huge spiral and there was a diving board at the top. You jumped down, and the map below looked like some boobs.

Nice that you can't do what you want in a game you payed for and let grown adults decide what's appropriate and inappropriate for themselves.
Blizzard are douches.

@TheDarkWayne Doesn't matter. Don't like it, don't play on that map. It's like when you turn on the tv. If you don't wanna watch the sopranos and prefer spongebob, it's totally cool with me what you do with your tv.
I'll be over here doing my thing with anyone else who enjoys it and you do yours.

"The problem is that as a T for Teen game you don't really know that your audience will be grown adults, do you?"
Unfortantly it says right there on the box that online is not rated, custom maps are online and thus not rated. Yes they want to keep there maps clean, but its the only way of playing the maps so even if you want to have a joke map with 3 mates, you can't.
Not got round to playing online yet (challenge + campaign still) tho so will have to wait and see :P

This is Bad Law Writing 101. "Offensive in nature?" Offensive in nature to WHOM? What if you're offended by bad map design? Seriously, some people are. Or is the offended party just whatever moderator is around, thus leading to highly inconsistent deletions? They gotta do better than this.

@Osnaz But, since you replied anyway, lemme break down my response to your comment.
1. Shut up.
No. This is a comments feed. People communicate here. Even people with different ideas than you! Shocking! Seriously, "shut up" is always a bad lead-in to a post.
2. It's their servers.
Yep! And I didn't dispute this. My comment was directed at the poor construction of their policy, which is doomed to inconsistent enforcement due to vague language. This vague language is also going to create a "chilling effect" if not corrected.
3. It's good they have some level of moderation.
I didn't dispute this, either. I don't really know or care. See above. That said, you didn't actually provide *any* evidence to support this argument. Or make an argument, for that matter.
Basically, REPLY FAIL
