Two questions:

1) Where does this game fit chronologically to the rest of the games?

2) Will there be a timed portion at the end of the game and you'll have to escape?

@heath79 - Show me a girl that's like Samus and I'll see what I can do to reverse the downrank I gave your comment.

@ thisredengine - Immediately following Super Metroid.

@thisredengine - Forgot about your second question. I hope the flashback at the beginning (which is the ending of Super Metroid) of Other M is fully playable and you get the Hyper Beam/Escape sequence. That would be a phenomenal way to start this game off.

The cinema's in Ninja Gaiden are campy....even going back to the NES. This doesn't shock me at all.

Yes, except that Team Ninja had no input on the story of this game. Only look for their influence in gameplay, not in world design, story, or cinematics.

You sure? The cinemas reek of Team Ninja to me. I'm not saying the campyness is a bad thing either, but if you were to show me a series of cinemas I could easily identify all the ones Team Ninja did, lol.

On thinking it over, you're actually more right than wrong. It gives the impression of Ninja Gaiden cinematics because the CG in this game is being handled by D-Rockets, an animation group that's done a lot of the work for the big Team Ninja games.

Though the real-time cutscenes, i'm not sure who those belong to.

Well, it sounds really fun. I'm feeling the same kind of excitement I had/have for FFXIII, with its emphasis on speed and fluidity and keeping up an engaging pace.

I'm probably going against the grain here, but I'm kinda disappointed so far from what I've read. It sounds like any other action game, except with controls that are less than ideal. And it's a shame what they're doing with the cinematics, as I always found the best part of the Metroid games to be the unsettling tone.

All that said, I haven't played the game yet. Maybe it's awesome. But it seems to me like all the things that make Metroid so great have been gutted.

Considering the game hasn't been released yet, we kinda figured that out already.

You are not alone. A LOT of people seems to think like you. But from EVERY review I have seen so far from people who played the game, it seems that is much more Metroid than it looks. They say there is exploration, dark lonely rooms, non talking Samus except on cutscenes and high difficult.
I’m worried about the cinematics, not because they will make the game any worst but because it will become food for the haters. I loved the way they used research as a storytelling device on Prime and see this as a step backwards, but if the game is good, skipable cinematics won’t make it any less good.

I can't believe people still preorder in this day and age. You should always wait for reviews or demos. I don't think retailers will be sold out on day 1.

$20 credit back from Amazon is a pretty good incentive to preorder. Also, it's Metroid.

I hate pre-ordering games just because I am sending the wrong message to devs and publishers that we need pre-orders for every game, exclusive pre-order bonuses, and all those stupid "locked content" or "timed content".

But like said, $20 back is far too good of a deal. I wish it was just off of the game, but this was one of the games this fall that is a must pickup. Will probably use on Halo: Reach or Gran Turismo 5.

Huh. You and GameSpot must've gotten the same thing, as i found something of theirs too.

Still, good to see Nintendo start building up hype for this. It was somewhat of an also-ran at their keynote at E3, and i feared they might be brushing it under the rug. Controls sound about right, given that d-pad is non-optimal, but everything is so fast-paced that it'll make little difference.

Combat sounds really involved and intense, though. Regular enemies look to have the complexity that was once reserved for mini-bosses.

It might just be me but it would seem that the only two "negative" comments made about the game in the entire review are the only two comments actually used as quotes.

We get these two:

Using the d-pad to control Samus in three dimensions felt a little stiff, but not distracting.
The cinematics seem really campy, which is jarring given the (so far) darker tone of this game.

As apposed to:

I could tell that there was plenty of the series' trademark exploration ahead.
Her movement through the environments is extremely fluid, something I'm guessing will come in handy later when running away from things, as well.
It might sound easy, but I can assure you it wasn't -- it was intense.
The controls were at once familiar and, in the case of switching to first-person so seamlessly, inventive.
There seemed to be just the right mix of exploration and action..

Not that I am fully experienced in the art of pointing out tidbits from a review but I sure hope Joystiq, or someone else, is not trying to cut the game down at any chance they get. It's Metroid.. Let it do its own talking like it always has.

Now!.. Back to this Kit Kat bar! =)

I agree with you. I read the "pull quotes" first and I couldn't believe the negativity. I thought, man, so sad the game is not going to be as good as I expected... Then I read the whole thing.

Very bad choices indeed.

Joystiq is growing to be more anti-Wii than usual.
At first they used to give understandable criticisms for all consoles... now it seems they're much more critical against the Wii than the other console games.

They could be just over-criticizing because it's a game we're all looking forward to, but it's starting to become more than coincidence that Joystiq is becoming extra critical against Wii games.
Dunno, I might be overreading all this - but I'll just say this, forget it, and only say it again if the next preview/review is critical. If the next one isn't, then hurrah.

From what I understand:

1 - shoot
2 - jump
A - morph ball
1 while in morph ball- bomb
Aim Wii-mote at screen - enter first person
B while in first person - missiles

Any word on the controls to switch visors or weapons? I'm curious how they're going to handle that.

Metroid Prime in the Trilogy game is taking long enough (I've been busy so only 5 hours in) so it could be a while before I get around to finishing all 3 never mind playing Other M. I expected Prime to be a well made game but didn't expect it to be my thing (not a major FPS fan) but Prime has converted me with its chilling atmosphere and great controls/level design.

Being the worst in a great series doesn't make a game "awful".

It being down-right awful, makes a game awful.

Of which MP3 wasn't.
