It seems Viacom's striking fewer sour notes this year, with operating profits up $789 million -- good for 14 percent -- in its Media Networks division (the umbrella its video game business is under). According to the mega-corp, gains are due in part to lower losses from the Rock Band franchise.
You know, we dinged Green Day: Rock Band for being a less lavish production than its Beatles-based predecessor, but it seems that (from a big picture perspective at least) the scaled-back approach and getting out of the instrument biz is paying off.

What?! No comments yet?! Be gone, unhappy face. I am here to ease your pain and suffering.
It's good to hear that Viacom and EA don't really have a reason now to give in to the dark menace that is Guitar Hero

With the financial reception of The Beatles and critical reception of Green Day (I'm sure I heard somewhere that its numbers weren't too hot though), I have to wonder if there'll be any more single artist games coming out.
And if there are, I can only imagine that it'll be more on the contemporary side of things.
I suppose if RB3 sells really well it could give them some breathing room from Viacom though

@Crayola Q Pants ESQ I'm not sure where anyone gets that TBRB was some sort of financial flop. It sold just a hair under 3 mil across three platforms. None of these single artist bands have done better. They may have had higher hopes for it, but they did well from it.

Yeah The Beatles: Rock Band sold a lot of copies but its sales were still dissapointingly low given the amount of extra work put into it and the cost of acquiring the rights to use The Beatles music.
I wish it had sold much better so that Harmonix could release more downloadable tracks for it but that doesn't look likely.

I wish music games would combine with the core action games. For example, you could sing while fighting space aliens, and your song quality would enhance your fighting power. Yes, I stole this idea from Macross/Robotech.

Or you could play guitar while killing zombies, and each note hit equals one dead zombie...

Rock Band should have made money when they could. The plastic instrument fad is in decline. Did they really think the phenomenon was going to last forever?
I know Activision is an easy target but they had the right business sense of milking a fad and then knowing when to scale back.

Okay, I know know know I'm inviting you guys to hammer me here (and joystiq has joked about it) but why not have some more widely commercialized single bands like....gulp....here goes: Creed, Nickleback, 3 Doors Down...oh yeah....and Creed.
I know I know but listen.....the songs are JUST the right level of difficulty. I love the metallica GH but dang those solos are a level above what I'm willing to invest timewise but going to hard level makes it too easy otherwise. I'm sick of disks that have 5% mainstream rock followed by an eclectic mix of stuff that just isn't fun to play. Give me mainstream rock RB or GH even if it's not hardcore metal and I'm there. I'd buy a mix like I mention above or heck I'd even shell out $18 a disk like I did for Death Magnetic.

3 Doors Down has 2 songs on Rock Band and Nickleback has 6 songs. You just have to download them.

@maemikemae Yeah, I know...but you're making my point really. 2 songs here...3 there. Gimme a whole 3 Doors Down disk...a whole Breaking Benjamin disk...a whole Creed Disk. Just seems like for every 2 of those songs, I have 40 songs that take the "Rock" out of RB and the "Guitar" out of GH. Sure, I like an occasional No Doubt song on the radio....but dang....I don't want to play it.
