Though we might argue that main character Vito Scaletta probably doesn't need to mow down that totally innocent phone booth (as seen in the video after the break), the action does its job of impressing upon us the physicality of Empire Bay. We'll get another chance to try out the game this coming Tuesday when the demo hits, and will get the full retail release just two weeks later on the 24th.
Mafia 2 trailer showcases tech behind the game

The latest trailer for Mafia 2 showcases some of the reasons we had such a great time playing it last month: attention to detail. Specifically, 2K Czech team members explain in the clip how the game engine powering the title goes a long way in making the world feel alive. NPCs wait for traffic signals, react naturally when you interact with them (for instance, smashing head-on into their automobile will elicit lots of shouting), and objects in the environment respond accordingly as well.

So you can't make your own character? Bother, I was kind of looking forward to this too. I'm tired of so-called sandbox games giving you all the freedom in the world, but still confining you to the shoes of some prefabricated character you have no connection to.

Is that really an issue here? Isn't playing the game and developing a bond between the character as the game goes on the point? Anyways, this is a story about the ITALIAN Mafia. If you made some Japanese dude with green hair, wouldn't that sort of break the immersion?

@Cleric The first Mafia's characters were just characters from Goodfellas and other Italian Mafia stereoytypes. But voiced by the actors from The Sopranos! :D
But agreed - I'm looking forward to getting engrossed in this main character's story. Making my own character isn't something I expect from freeroam games, really

@Faenix - Having a custom character didn't ruin Mass Effect, it bolstered your connection to the story - which is, IMO, one of the best told narratives in gaming.
@ Grey - Now you're going a bit overboard here. You can restrict your character creation to be of period. Even having the simple choice of male and female characters would go a long way to having you more connected with the story.
@ Cleric - I'm going to agree to disagree here. While I've never played Mafia, I feel nothing but disdain for the playable characters in GTA, likewise with Just Cause, inFamous, etc. I'd rather a game offer you the full illusion of choice than just a sample of it.

I concede that my example was a little exaggerated, but come on. Not trying to sound sexist, but a female main character in a Mafia game? Really? Also, I'm wondering what sort of connection are you making by changing how the character looks in an Italian mafia game. He would have to be Italian, meaning black hair, brown eyes, and being white. Would being able to add a goatee or mustache make you feel better?
P.S. Not trying to start to be snide or to start an argument, just really want to know what you think :)

@Grey - My fiance is a bona fide blond-haired, green-eyed, full-on Italian.
So, yeah ... good on you for stereotyping.

So you feel disdain for characters with a strict personality and look, but not if you can add a special hat to them? Just because a game is sandbox doesn't mean that the characters should always be customizable, nor do RPGs or any other genre. there is no genre that guarantees you can make your own person

@Cleric - I never said it needs to have it, I'm only stating the it would be my personal preference for a game built around freedom to offer you character creation and customization. It doesn't make the game bad (though, it very well could make the game better), it just makes me not very interested in such games.

That must be the worst criticism for a game I've ever heard, ever.
How do you expect the developer to tell a captivating story if you get to choose the character's gender and appearance?
Mass Effect (along with a handful of other games) is a very specific example of a game where your character's appearance has no influence on the story. In Mass Effect you play as a super-generic space marine guy/girl and the only reason it works is because you're surrounded by other colorful characters amidst a much bigger conflict.
In Mafia 2 you're not saving the world or liberating your nation. You play as one beautifully crafted character trying to survive in a post-war America.
Being able to customize your character in Mafia 2 would ruin in, end of story.

Character creation is not a flaw. However, it's not an attribute, either. For MMO's like WoW or APB, yeah it is pretty important but this is a sandbox game. Not really that big of a deal.

This ain't the Sims. The Mafia series has always been a cinematic spectacle, a movie experience in a game, and a homage to the G. It is NOT your definition of a sandbox game; in fact, I would not call it that at all, as it defies all its soporific, inane stereotypes. So, if you think or are the type of person who is childish enough to plant himself or a character of your own making in a movie or game: sorry, but this is no kiddie game.

I got tired of reading all the responses but seriously now. You're not creating a personality in those games, you're creating how the character looks. It's like complaining that you couldn't choose which actor to star in a movie.
Not to offend but it's like one must have serious emotional and interconnection problems with people if you can't "connect" to a character you didn't "create". It's not like Oblivion where there's very little character backdrop information and thus your main connection is when you created the character. This game and many other "sandbox" games are story driven so how a character looks is irrelevant.
If games would let you create characters that were defined by personality traits you created and thus would interact accordingly and not by your later input, then you might have something.
As it stands your argument only makes logical sense in the Sims series of games.
Still, power to you. Whatever knocks your rocks.

@Faerie Tael: Having a custom character wouldn't make sense in the context of the story. A female character wouldn't be taken seriously in the Mafia, and a guy with blue hair and a yellow suit would have been shot immediately. They're trying to craft an experience, and that includes a specific character's story.
Simply put, Mass Effect is a RPG, Mafia II ISN'T.

The first Mafia was just amazing. Some of the things it did are still unrivaled in sandbox gaming to this day. The overall atmosphere was near-flawless. I am so unbelievably stoked for this game!
Hopefully I can finally drive faster than 30 miles an hour without risking a 15-second cutscene every 3 minutes.

This video is how you sell a game, I totally wanna get this now, I was going to pass it up but it looks like a buy.
This video reminds me of the red dead redemption gameplay videos, footage of gameplay with details on what makes the game worth playing.
The one problem with getting this game is Halo:Reach
when will I play this once halo is out.

I was not interested in this game, now I am.
Who could of thought, a story driven sandbox that doesn't come from a series of non-story driven games where all you do is HAVE FUN with cheats and the occasional mission, then in the fourth sequel of this unspeakable series, they change the whole base of the series and turn the cheat level to a minimum.
It is story driven, and it looks fun, unlike gta 4, im sorry but, that game may have had a great story, but it didn't have the charm or the entertaining factor as it's previous installations.
I'm just sayin', with this wall of text

Lets just say this. Some games have customization, others don't. Both games can be great however, it boils down to personal preferences. If you want a game that allows you to have a pink suit blue haired albino character with a pimp hat, then pick a game that allows that. If not, then big frickin deal. It still can be fun. GTA 4 was fun but it put a limit to the amount of customization. Mass Effect 1 and 2 where great as well giving your more customization. Dragon Age was great as well. But remember, you probably will still buy it and play the game and get your moneys worth. COD 4, Crysis, Battlefield Bad company all had no customization whatsoever but they still where good.
Boil it down to a sentence: If its that important to have that, buy another game.
