And that's the inspiration behind bringing back Mark Turmell, the lead designer and programmer on the original game. It's allowed EA Canada to identify what has been internally referred to as "The Turmell Hit List," a list of initially overlooked issues Turmell brought to the table.
NBA Jam video takes aim at 'The Turmell Hit List'

It's easy to take jamming for granted. In NBA Jam, lighting one's self on fire and pulling off "the mad crazy dunks" looks so simple. It seems like all you need are some colorful shoes and a deep determination to dish rocks but, as creative director Trey Smith informs us in the video past the break, it takes more than that -- specifically, it takes knowledge.

@amjustice
The least they could have done was pack it in with the 2k series, so you'd be getting a decent game out of it.
But yea, not releasing it on the arcades sucks bigtime, and is really stupid. That thing would sell like hotcakes on there. They're missing their biggest audience.

Ummm... yeah, except in this case they're bundling an Arcade level game with a $60 retail game. That's going to wipe out much of their prospective audience. They're bundling a sim basketball game with an over the top arcade style game. I don't think those audiences overlap as much as they hope they do nor do I think they're going to get a bunch of people spending $60 to play what should be a $15 game.
In the end they mind wind up with a bunch of copies in people homes due to the bundling, but I don't think it will do much for the actual online community for the game.

@amjustice agreed. bundling NBA jam, an complete arcade game, with a sim like nba 11 is like a bundle of forza or gran turismo with burnout or crazy taxi (all different publishers i know). While there might be some overlap, the majority of SIM racers don't want to play arcade racers and arcade racers, like me, have no interest in the sims. I'd gladly buy NBA jam, but have no interest in nba 11.

In all accounts while watching the video brought back fond memories that's all they will stand at as. EA while understandably using this on a business stand point requiring you to purchase elite 11 to get this game it wont move me at all.
The only basketball game that has my eye sight this year is NBA 2k11 and Jordan. So while I see them using this as a tactic to get people to swing to Elite 11 or getting both 2k11 and elite. Others like me aren't going to go for it.

You never know NBA Elite could make a turn-around for the series. The NHL series for EA once was getting owned by 2k and now the 2k series is stuck being on the Wii only because EA stepped up their game. Also the guy who produced the NHL series has taken over the basketball series. So Elite could actually become a great game...time will tell. Still the 2k series will sell better, but as long as Elite makes improvements it could bring back some competition which is good for gamers.
