Nomura 'definitely' wants to make a The World Ends With You sequel
50
It seems all of our training exercises to develop our latent mind control abilities are starting to pay off. After months of attempting to bend the will of Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura to try and get him to create a follow-up to 2008's surprisingly lovable handheld RPG The World Ends With You, the designer recently told Nintendo Power (transcribed by Siliconera) that "I definitely want to make a sequel." See that, Nomura? We're in your mind.
Of course, games at Square Enix are developed in a set order, and Nomura explained he's "very busy working on other titles right now, but when the time is right, I would love to make another installment of The World Ends with You." Now we just have to use our psychic powers to convince Nomura to go ahead and skip all those other games. Then we're going to make him do a funny little dance. Because we can.

Oh man do want! But considering how many titles they have to work on currently, I wouldn't be expecting anything for another few years.

Actually, just to be Mr. Negative, I'm not sure how well it would work on the 3DS.
Only the top screen is 3D, and only the bottom screen is touch screen.
So you could only display one of the partners in 3d, and that can't be Neku as he needs the touch screen.
I'm sure they'll be able to overcome this somehow, maybe some sort of online integration where one person plays as Shiki, and one as Neku, in realtime as the game progresses? Could work well, actually, but you'd need to encounter enemies at the same time...

Please please please please -please- do it. TWEWY was one of the most quirky and inspiring games I've ever played. This makes me happy, I hope it just happens sooner than later.

Is it me or is The World Ends with You the best type for a video game?

Quirky, yes. Quality? No. Incomprehensible story, repetitive gameplay. About 2 hours in I had a pin build that allowed me to effortlessly beat every encounter, which made the whole pin collection mechanic far less ineresting, because I had no need for more pins. And for a game about fashion, I thought it was pretty stupid that the clothes you wore didn't effect your in game look *at all.* Pretty weak, overall.

I thought the story was great and made quite a bit of sense.
Did you play through the entire game? If you only got two hours in, I can't imagine you made it to the end of the first week. Its still pretty easy at that point, though the first week boss is fairly hard.
What setup did you use? I switched the type of pins I used a couple of time.
I agree about the appearance change though. It would've been a lot of extra spriting work, but it would've been worth it.

No, I definitely didn't finish it, but I'm pretty sure I got past the first week, I got to where you switch from having the girl as your partner to the aloof pretty boy. It's been a long time since I played, so I don't remember my pin set up... Game had a lot of cool ideas, don't get me wrong, for instance I especially liked that it was a fantastical RPG set in a real world location... But that was a double edged sword because I felt like I was re-traversing the same areas forever. The combat system with the partner felt interesting, but I never felt like I wanted to actually take control of them, I felt like it was really difficult to get them to do anything useful in manual mode, and I was never forced to actually do it, so I'd just let them go in auto mode and just madly tap the screen with my leveled up super pins. It just didn't hang together for me.

Ok, the pretty boy is Joshua which means you got to the second week. Thats when the story really starts to pick up.
The game could use a lot of refining, but its still a great game. As for the combat, I usually put my partner on automatic unless I specifically wanted to control him.

Nice, but I wonder if it will use a new cast of characters or somehow find a way to patch on another story to the original game..

Twewy is a great game. Fantastic game. A stand out of not only the DS's superb library, but of the genre over the last five years.
But does it NEED a sequel? No. Really, it doesn't. Neku's story is over. It ended perfectly and it doesn't need to be explored any further. Maybe a new character would work, but I don't think they could make a cast that would live up to the first, nor craft an experience quite as unique as the original.
Don't shy away from the quirky, Nomura. Just aim it in a new, crazier direction for the genre.

Well, there's still some story that they can explore with Joshua and Hanekoma. They could definitely explore the stuff that happened behind the scenes more, maybe even from the point of view of Joshua or Hanekoma. Or maybe you would get to play as a pair of reapers. I think that there are still a lot of ways that they could go with the mythos and storyline.

Most of that is already covered with the secret reports, it explains what hanekoma was up to and why he was doing what he was doing.
Yeah some more stuff would be cool, explaining a bit more of the change of heart that happened would be ace, but its quite nicely self contained at least (not like some games out there building themselves deliberatly for sequals that never happen :/ )

First: TWEWY sequel! *girlish hypersonic squee that shatters windows* YEEESSS!
With that out of the way, I agree that Neku's story is over. I'd rather not see any existing characters except for the two that are integral to the Game. Here's the elements that I think are essential to a TWEWY game:
Noise
The Game
Partners
The "self-discovery" story type
Hanekowa - His character type is integral to the story. I'd rather see him again than have them introduce a new character to play the same role as guide.
Optionally it would be OK for Joshua to show up since he's an integral part of the Game. But it would also be fine for him to remain faceless and nameless, or for his role to never even be mentioned.
Although I think the story type should be the same, the story itself and the character types should be different. A non-emo protagonist would be nice. I think that, in the end, it should be completely ambiguous if the second game occurs before or after first game, while still obviously being in the same universe.

Yeah, that's true. Maybe not that, after all. Though Hanekoma and Joshua are pretty much guaranteed in any sequel. The location would be a problem, though. Going through Shibuya again wouldn't be as interesting and captivating as it was the first time. Maybe in Times Square or something.

This was one of Squenix's best games in years. I'm really not sure how they could make a sequel out of it unless they do totally new characters and/or setting, though.

Are you kidding me people? Let him finish the KH series or at least have 1 or 2 projects in between. Not 5 different projects to distract him from KH. I mean FF13, FF13 Versus, FF Advent Children. The world ends with you, and everything else. Seriously, stick with one agenda before moving on to dozens more.

TWEWY at least showed that Square-Enix could still put out a good game once in a while that isn't Dragon Quest related. Other than that, I think they actually enjoy running Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts straight into mediocrity.

The only thing I want more than this is a sequel to Sonic Chronicles. Seriously, that game was left on a total f*cking cliffhanger, and Sonic and Tails had the audacity to hint towards a sequel after the credits. Get on it BioWare.
On topic. Do want, I will shit bricks. Especially if it's on the 3DS. That'd be epic.
