Remedy discusses next Alan Wake DLC, 'The Writer'
25
Outside of the knowledge that a second episode of DLC for Alan Wake -- titled "The Writer" -- will be coming sometime this fall and that it will cost 560 MS Points ($7), little else is known about the developer's plans for the future of the series. Though head of franchise development Oskari Häkkinen didn't get too specific, he told Eurogamer that the second DLC may not necessarily be the last we see of Mr. Wake on Xbox Live Marketplace. "I can't confirm whether this is going to be the last one or not. There are some things in the pipeline that we're looking at, and we're balancing out how we will move on with this," Häkkinen said.
In terms of "The Writer," though, Remedy ... writer Mikko Rautalahti added that gameplay will skew towards the type found in the first DLC ("The Signal"), while level design errs more on the side of fantasy than the first. "You will be seeing a lot more weird stuff. And we've learned quite a bit from making 'The Signal,' and we'll be applying that to 'The Writer' quite a bit," he said.
Both Häkkinen and Rautalahti remained relatively tight-lipped on the subject of an Alan Wake sequel, with Häkkinen only allowing, "I don't see any reason why we wouldn't continue with Microsoft with a full-blown sequel for Alan Wake. We definitely want to do it. We have great ideas for it. I can see Mikko here twiddling his thumbs with his ideas for Alan Wake 2. There's certainly a want, and that want is I believe from both sides." He did, however, add, "Right now I can't confirm anything." Given our feelings on the game (and the first DLC), we've got all our fingers and toes crossed for more.

As much as I want an Alan Wake squeal, I don't think I would be able to handle Remedy's development time again. I would rather they end the story with the DLC and start on something new.

All that time was spent on tools and development processes that are now finally mature. Throwing all that away to work on something new would restart that development cycle.
I think it would be a shame to waste such a strong brand on a single game.

@FraGNeM Sorry but graphically Alan Wake is nothing to write home about, lighting effects were awesome but that can only do so much. Also I know I'm not the only one that feels like we have to keep paying to find out the TRUE ending to Alan.

I didn't mention graphics, but since you did, I thought Alan Wake had some of the best lighting and atmospheric effects I've ever seen, with a unique setting not often seen in games. I thought they nailed the feeling of a small, rural town in the Northwest US.
I think it would take a very jaded gamer to be disappointed with the graphics of that game.

I want to explore more Brightfalls, I hope we can do that on the Writer DLC. The Signal was pretty cool, the final boss enemy was really much better than the original one in the game.

As much as I liked the game, I have a hard time imagining a sequel. It shouldn't occur in Bright Falls or pertain to "the darkness", since that was endemic to the location. But that would seemingly change the entire gameplay mechanic. And the story was so well intertwined with the gameplay, I just can't see it... Maybe I just lack the necessary imagination.
I didn't think Bioshock needed a sequel, but I enjoyed it and thought it brought some nice changes. So, I'm sure this franchise is in good hands. I just hope they don't try to rush a 2011 release date...

You have to think of Alan Wake as an Episodic Game rather then a "complete"(I hate to use the word complete) game. It's set up more like a TV show so each episode answers something but then throws in a cliffhanger at the end. I kind of like this design. It seems fresh to me and keeps me excited for the next installment.
BioShock didn't need a sequel. It was a complete story. Alan Wake is an evolving story.
Personally, I think they should dump more money into this and get a team of television writers (like from LOST or Fringe) and really expand the locations and characters.
I also think they could use an update in the engine... think Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2.

I would like to see Alan Wake to face off against Jackie Estacado the host of the Darkness...it will be most entertaining...seeing a super entity face off against a writer with a revolver and an Energizer Bunny approved flashlight/

I never got the Signal...why did I input that stupid code early. I never gotten my repass yet either.

Same here.
Except I only got AW at the beginning of this month and I put the code in. I have the video on my HDD, but nothing else. I've emailed MS and they said they are 'investigating it'.
I don't see why they didn't just give a code for the DLC on it's own, and it will automatically download when it came out.

I hope MS sees Alan Wake as a good franchise.
I don't think the game has sold that well, definitely a hit for both MS and Remedy obviously due do its development length but they should hang on to it and expand.

The only reason is see a sequel in the future is because Remedy has nothing else on their plate. I can't see them cooking up a brand new IP rather than hang onto the base they have and work on how to expand it.
Anyway, trying not to get psyched for The Writer, since it's still a ways out, but The Signal was so good, and I'm down with more weirdness. I was waiting all through the full game for things to get truly bizarre, and it wasn't until the very end it delivered. The Signal had it in spades, much to my pleasure.

Weirder levels? The Signal had some pretty bizarre stuff already. I'd rather see more stuff like the main game.

@Thrasher666 alan wkae was an amazing unique game it doesnt need multiplayer it would ruin the game, could you imagine loads of little kids that havent hit puberty yet camping with flashlights and flareguns, urrgh horrible just thinking about it.
Then again Co-op if done right could be ok. :)
