Global StarCraft 2 League offers over $500,000 in prize money this year
14
A new professional StarCraft competitive organization was recently founded by South Korean television network GomTV, which locked down exclusivity rights to broadcast all Blizzard tournaments in the nation. Called the Global StarCraft 2 League, the organization will begin holding monthly 64-man tournaments across the country later in August, and then every month throughout the rest of 2010. To convince set-in-their-ways players to make the jump from the original StarCraft to the sequel, GomTV is offering over $125,000 in prize money for every tournament.
While potentially lucrative, these monthly tournaments are only preliminaries for a series of tournaments set for 2011, culminating in the Blizzard Cup next December that will crown the greatest StarCraft 2 player of the year. These tournaments will be broadcast globally starting next month -- but if you'd prefer to spend your precious time watching an American StarCraft 2 tourney, your chance might not be too far off. The MLG recently added the successful strategy title to its rotation.

Since I bought the game I've been watching play by plays on Youtube and I have to say they are pretty entertaining and you learn a little about how best to play too from watching and by the commentary. I wouldn't mind having a SC channel on cable tv (seeing as how they allow channels as shitty as some of the ones I've seen).

Husky and HD definitely got me into the commentating stuff, and they are great personalities (they even hosted a pretty good Invitational, called HDH, check it out, although the plays are going to be a bit outdated). However, they are known for not being the best at game analysis. Day[9], however, has great analysis (ex WCG player) and is pretty funny too, but his daily commentaries focus on learning the game and learning how to be a better player. So, if you don't care about analysis, go the HD/Husky route, but if you want better analysis, go the Day[9] route. There are tons of other commentators too.

They enjoy it, you can hear it in their voice, it's entertaining and while they might not have the best at analyzing the strats, they're getting there.

I didn't realize that numbers became outdated. What do you think of 23? That one has always been my favorite, and it would devastate me to learn that my favorite number had become obsolete.

Is Blizzard even allowing cross-region play yet? I guess if I get hit by a mysterious, humming, cobalt meteorite and instantly become a professional Starcraft champion, I will have to pick up a Korean copy and come up with Korean userid to play in this global league.
It's a shame you can't actually watch these things in-game. Guild Wars has something like that, and it's pretty neat to be able to watch matches in-game instead of on lossy web videos. Although I guess with youtube, you can play AND watch... so there's a win.
